Good Morning, Music Lovers! We have a light but impressive programming day on tap today. We begin a bit later today than usual.
Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris.
Here’s today’s line-up:
1:00 p.m. Linda Ronstadt & Emmylou Harris Live at The Orpheum Theatre, Boston, Mass, October 1, 1999
The Western Wall partnership takes it on the road. Two of the most amazingly talented women in popular music give a tremendous performance in my home town.
7:00 p.m. Echoes From the Canyon: Various Artists
Laurel Canyon in the sixties was a hotbed of tremendous musical creativity that reverberated around the world. You will hear The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, The Mamas & The Papas, The Beach Boys, The Lovin’ Spoonful, The Doors, Jackson Browne, CSNY, Joni Mitchell, and more.
Join us here in The Mermaid Lounge. It won’t cost you a penny. Ever. We don’t ask for your personal information or your credit card number. All we ask is that you open a tab and click below:
Good Morning, Folks! It’s our usual Saturday in The Mermaid Lounge, and our Music Mermaid has chosen some great material for today.
Emmylou Harris & Spyboycoming at ya later today.
Here’s today’s programming:
11:00 a.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Antoine “Fats” Domino
We love Fats Domino here in The Mermaid Lounge. There’s a lot of discussion about where rock n’ roll started, what was the first rock n’ roll song, and the question has been asked “Was anyone singing rock n’ roll before Fats Domino?” Not sure anyone actually was, but we certainly consider our friend from New Orleans a pioneer of the genre.
3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Heart of Mine by Maria Muldaur FINAL AIRING!
Today we have the final airing of our Album of The Week as sultry crooner Maria Muldaur interprets the romantic side of Bob Dylan. Don’t forget to tune it in. Tomorrow when you wake up, we’ll have a new choice.
6:00 p.m. Emmylou Harris & Spyboy Live at Kongresshaus, Zurich, Switzerland, January 20, 1997
A few weeks ago, we featured Emmylou Harris’s brilliant album, Wrecking Ball, as our Album of The Week. Her tour with Spyboy took Wrecking Ball on the road, although she did feature several songs from other albums, most notably, her ode to Gram Parsons, the beautiful Boulder to Birmingham. The stripped-down approach to her music continued her love of working with a variety of different musicians. The band consisted of country singer-songwriter Buddy Miller on guitar, and two New Orleans musicians, Daryl Johnson on bass and Brady Blade on drums.
10:00 p.m. Live Dead! The Grateful Dead Live at The Uptown Theatre, Chicago, Illinois, December 3, 1979 NEW!
One more from the road from the greatest jam band in popular music history. Not sure I’ve ever said this, but please keep in mind that Live Dead shows are sourced from a variety of providers, including fan-recorded events so there may be some flaws and quality variations as we progress through the catalogue.
Tune us in, people. Germany and Britain love us. We’ve recently added regular listeners from Estonia, the Russian Federation, and the Scandinavian countries. We hope you’ll join us soon!
Good Morning, Musicologists! We’ve got a great mix today. We’re back to the Wildflowers & All The Rest project, for starters. Then some live Dylan and one of our patented various artist playlists. In between, there’s all that great Open Stream.
It’s Bob. Need I say more?
Here’s today’s line-up:
11:00 a.m. Tom Petty’s Wildflowers & All The Rest: Live Wildflowers
We go back to the great Wildflowers box set this morning for a selection of the best Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers live performances as chosen by his family, bandmates and friends. We miss this guy here in The Mermaid Lounge.
3:00 p.m. Bob Dylan Live at Budokan, Tokyo, Recorded February 28 & March 1, 1978
Tom Petty and his bandmates once said that they learned the art of improvisation on stage from going on tour with Bob Dylan. He taught them well because they were one of the best damned live bands I’ve ever seen. Bob Dylan is a master craftsman in so many ways.
7:00 p.m. Rock, Ballads & Blues: Various Artists
We haven’t aired this one for a while, so it’s time has come around once again. You will hear songs from Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Dusty Springfield, J.J. Cale, Ry Cooder, Gregg Allman, Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band, Van Morrison, Linda Ronstadt, Waylon Jennings, Emmylouo Harris, and more.
We’ve got a lot of people on this morning from all over the world…Denmark, Estonia, Italy, Greece…where are you this morning? All you need is a free browser tab and your finger. What you don’t need is your wallet.
Good Morning, Music Lovers! It’s a very special day today as we celebrate the release of Trio by the only female supergroup on the planet thirty-four years ago yesterday. Nobody ever talks about Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton, and Emmylou Harris even being a supergroup, but that’s because women are still marginalized in the music world. They were every bit a supergroup, make no mistake about it.
Linda, Dolly & Emmylou. A supergroup no matter how much they ignore it.
Here’s today’s line-up:
12:00 p.m. Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton & Emmylou Harris: The Trio Sessions, The Complete Collection NEW!
Today we celebrate three extraordinary musical talents who came together and produced two of the most amazing albums of all time. We give you the complete Trio collection, including outtakes, unreleased music, alternate versions, and — of course — the versions you all know and love.
6:00 p.m. The Rolling Stones, Live at the Palais Royale, Toronto, Canada, August 16, 2002
The original bad boys of rock n’ roll here play it for you live from the Palais Royale in Toronto. Hey, it’s only rock n’ roll, but we like it, like it, yes we do.
In between all of this, we have our usual Open Stream, as chosen by the magical Music Mermaid who runs the selection. We’re free, as in free. No membership, credit card, or personal information required. All you need is a free computer tab, then click your heels, and hit the link below.
We are off to a late start today, Music Lovers, but the music is still great in spite of all that. We have a brand new album of the week, epic Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash, and a great playlist later this evening.
Bob Dylan & Johnny Cash got together to record during breaks in the sessions for Dylan’s “Nashville Skyline” album.
Here’s today’s line-up:
1:00 p.m. Bob Dylan & Johnny Cash, Nashville 1969
While Bob Dylan was in Nashville recording his Nashville Skyline album, he and Johnny Cash decided to get together to record some music. Only one of those songs made it to Nashville Skyline. It was Girl From The North Country. The others were released much later. We have those recordings here for you today.
5:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Timeless, An All-Star Tribute to Hank Williams NEW!
This is one sweet album of all-stars paying their respects to a counry legend, Hank Williams, Sr. There are a number of memorable performances here, especially from Lucinda Williams and Emmylou Harris. However, the one that stands out for me is Tom Petty’s version of You’re Gonna’ Change (Or I’m A Gonna’ Leave). Listen for it. Other contributors include Mark Knopfler, Shery Crow, Bob Dylan, Hank Williams III, and Johnny Cash.
8:00 p.m. Deb’s Stream: What’s In A Name? Various Artists
We haven’t heard this one for a while, and it’s a good one. Songs with people’s names in them, either in the title or the lyrics. Begins at 8:00 p.m. tonight with contributions from The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Beatles, Jonathan Edwards, Dolly Parton, Steely Dan, Linda Ronstadt, The Velvet Underground, The Turtles and more! Don’t miss it.
Tune us in because, well, we’re here playing great music for free. We never ask for a credit card, require a “subscription” or ask for your personal information. And no. We don’t track you either. Who has time for that? Not us. We also do not accept advertising, and we run 24/7. What else do you want?
Good Morning, Music Lovers! Saturday is our busiest programming day by far, but the vast majority of our 24-hour music cycle remains devoted to wide open stream.
Linds Ronstadt. Nobody touches this voice.
Here’s our Saturday line-up:
11:00 a.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Linda Ronstadt
We open our programming with the Queen of Rock. She retains that title to this day, as far as we here in The Mermaid Lounge are concerned. It’s more than just the voice (although that would be enough). It’s the music selection, the genres she was able to master, and the way she defied the “experts” in her field who predicted her demise for changing music styles. She’s the package, people.
3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Wrecking Ball by Emmylou Harris FINAL AIRING!
We follow that up with a very good friend of Linda’s, and her career redefining album, Wrecking Ball. This is our final airing before a new album is introduced tomorrow.
6:00 p.m. Jackson Browne & Warren Zevon, Live Acoustic Set at VPRO Studios, December 8, 1976
Two good friends and two extraordinary songwriters get together to sing each other’s tunes. A great take.
10:00 p.m. Live Dead! The Grateful Dead Live at The Deer Creek Music Center, Noblesville, Indiana, July 2, 1995 NEW!
Another new performance by The Dead, this one from the Deer Creek Music Center, which has been renamed about five times since then. But no matter, when it comes to The Grateful Dead, no two shows sound the same, even when they’re part of the same tour.
Tune us in, people. It’s Saturday. I don’t know what it’s doing where you are, but the weather has finally turned dismal here today, so it’s time to put our feet up and enjoy the music! We don’t have to give you a free trial. We’re free all the time.
Happy Birthday to George Harrison, on what would have been his 75th birthday.
Here’s today’s line-up:
11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Wrecking Ball by Emmylou Harris
This is our second to last airing of this brilliant album, so hear it while you can! This was a career redefining project for Emmylou Harris, who teamed up with Daniel Lanois for Wrecking Ball. She not only has help from Lanois, but Neil Young, Lucinda Williams, and many others.
3:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of George Harrison UPDATED!
George Harrison is one of those guys who was underestimated when The Beatles started out, but as time passed, people began to see just exactly what he was capable of. This newly-refreshed playlist features music from his Beatle years, his solo music, and his time as part of the brilliant supergroup, The Traveling Wilburys. Don’t miss celebrating on what would have been George Harrison’s 75th birthday.
7:00 p.m. Under The Influence: Various Artists
This is one of our most popular playlists because, hey, we’ve all been under the influence at one time or another…legally or illegally. You’ll hear Glenn Frey, Eric Clapton, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Neil Young, John Lee Hooker, The Temptations, Donovan, The Traveling Wilburys, and more!
Tune in. Turn on. Drop out. Someone famous said that. His name was Timothy Leary. The father of LSD. Appropriate, don’t you think?
It’s another Tuesday Bluesday in The Mermaid Lounge, and we’ve got a great line-up today on the blues front as well as Emmylou Harris and her Album of The Week.
The Allman Brothers Band marquis at The Beacon Theatre.
Here’s today’s line-up:
11:00 a.m. The Allman Brothers Band Play All Night: Live at The Beacon Theatre, New York (1992)
In 1992, the legendary Allman Brothers Band played a 10-night run at New York’s fabled Beacon Theatre. This collection is the result of that musical run.
3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Wrecking Ball by Emmylou Harris
The career redefining album by Emmylou Harris is a masterpiece. Give it a listen to see why. With help from friends like Lucinda Williams, Daniel Lanois, The McGarrigle Sisters and many others.
7:00 p.m. B.B. King & Friends: A Night of Blistering Blues
We close out the day’s programming with B.B. King and friends, like Chaka Khan, Gladys Knight, Etta James, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Dr. John, Billy Ocean, Eric Clapton and Phil Collins.
I could repeat here that we are totally free and outside the system, we accept no commercial advertising, we don’t employ chatty DJ’s (in fact, there’s only one), we don’t run rap, hip-hop or disco, and we don’t need your “subscription” by credit card or your personal information. In fact, all you need is a free computer tab. Then, you click the link below.
We’ve added some new music to our Standard Rotation over the past couple of weeks. This is the first opportunity we’ve had to update you on these additions.
The great Curtis Mayfield.
We’ve added some new people and bands to the rotation, like The Jerry Garcia Band, The Boogaloo Swamis (Cajun/Zydeco), and the combination of Jimi Hendrix & Little Richard.
We’ve also added to the volume of several artists: Sam Cooke, Curtis Mayfield, Emmylou Harris, The Youngbloods, Tracy Chapman and BeauSoleil.
We’ve also cleaned out some duplicates and some old political stuff (we still have more of this junk to go; but it is a painstaking process), giving us a total of 26,834 songs in the rotation.
We will be adding some of our Album of The Week selections to the on-demand section over the next few weeks.
In spite of the fact that we offer several hours of planned programming during each day, the vast majority of our 24-hour cycle is devoted to Open Stream. We hope you’ll tune us in.
Good Morning, Musicologists! It’s a bright sunny day here in the Boston area, in stark contrast to the past few days. It considerably improves the mood.
Emmylou Harris owns our Album of The Week. By anyone’s standards, “Wrecking Ball” was brilliant.
Here’s today’s line-up:
11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Wrecking Ball by Emmylou Harris NEW!
Wrecking Ball was Emmylou Harris’ eighteenth release, and it was also a career-redefining effort, her music taking on a sharper edge as she combined with Daniel Lanois (known for his work with U2). She covered songs by Neil Young (the title song), Daniel Lanois, Steve Earle, Bob Dylan, and Lucinda Williams (not a complete list). Many helped out with the instruments and vocals. It won the 1996 Grammy Award as The Best Contemporary Folk Recording. This is a spectacular album. Not to be missed, people.
3:00 p.m. The Sixties Rotation, Volume One: Various Artists
Our monthly tribute to those who inspired this radio station is once again afoot. This is the original Sixties Rotation (we have two) where you will hear five hours of uninterrupted gems from Simon & Garfunkel, The Byrds, The Searchers, Dusty Springfield, The Beatles, The Hollies, Blind Faith, Jeff Beck, Johnny Rivers, Sonny & Cher, The Everly Brothers, Joe Cocker, Roy Orbison, Petula Clark, and many more!
Now, listen, folks. It’s Sunday. A day of rest, no matter what the capitalists tell you. Nobody needs to spend money seven days a fucking week. Got it? Kick back, put your feet up, and tune in some great music. It doesn’t cost you a penny, there’s no credit card or personal information reqired. Just your computer and a free tab.
