It won’t cost you a penny, and there’s no commercial advertising…just music 24/7. No lie.

Steve Winwood Begins, Stephen Stills Ends, and Somewhere In Between It’s Either ‘Heaven Or Hell’ on Friday, August 16, 2024

Good morning, musicologists! We end the work week with a bang to day with two legends opening and closing, and our ‘Between Heaven and Hell’ playlist.

Here’s your end-of-the-work-week lineup:

10:00 a.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Steve Winwood

A Mermaid Lounge legend in our eyes. We don’t think the guy has made a bad song ever in his life. Today he’s front and center as a member of The Spencer-Davis Group, Blind Faith, Traffic and as a solo artist. That resume alone puts him in the Legend category.

4:00 p.m. Between Heaven & Hell: Various Artists

Not an EP, but a good one nevertheless with The Ozark Mountain Daredevils, The Eagles, Led Zeppelin, Stevie Wonder, The Rolling Stones, The Grass Roots, Emmylou Harris, Roberta Flack, Elvis Presley, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Fats Domino, Bruce Hornsby and more!

9:00 a.m. The Flying Burrito Brothers Live at The Palomino Club, No. Hollywood, CA, June 8, 1969

We open with a band in the forefront of the country-rock genre; this version with both Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman.

1:00 p.m. Are You Ready For The Country: Various Artists

This afternoon, we’ve got country and country-rock filling up the airwaves with The Eagles, Asleep at The Wheel, Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, The Byrds, Emmylou Harris, Neil Young, Guy Clark, Steve Earle, Dolly Parton, Poco, Linda Ronstadt, Alison Krauss & Union Station, The Marshall Tucker Band, The Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Jerry Jeff Walker, Johnny Cash, Gram Parsons, John Prine, Tom Rush, Willie Nelson, Townes Van Zandt, Rosanne Cash, Carlene Carter, Kris Kristofferson, The Desert Rose Band and more!

We Spend Friday With Linda Ronstadt & Her Friends, ‘One Hit Wonders’ and Sam Cooke Live in Miami, July 19, 2024

Good morning, musicologists! We have made it to Friday once again and we’re packed with some great programming today from Ronstadt and her many singing friends, some ‘One Hit Wonders’ from the sixties and Sam Cooke live in Miami, vintage 1963.

Here’s your Friday lineup:

10:00 a.m. Linda Ronstadt & Friends: Duets and More

In site of her amazing solo career, Linda Ronstadt always preferred to sing as part of a bigger whole, perhaps because she grew up singing with her family. She has indeed been in very good company from a musical perspective. You will hear her with Hoyt Axton, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, J.D. Souther, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, Paul Simon, Wendy Waldman, Valerie Carter, Maria Muldaur, Neil Young and more!

3:00 p.m. One-Hit Wonders: Sixties Style

8:00 p.m. Sam Cooke Live at The Harlem Square Club, Miami, FL, January 12, 1963

The late and undeniably great main event known as Sam Cooke delivers a live performance to close out today’s programming. There’s a reason why Sam Cooke is universally known as the ‘King of Soul’ for his contributions to the genre.

4:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of The Eagles

One of the legendary country-rock bands of the seventies takes center state in the spotlight this afternoon.

Tonight the focus shifts a bit to jazz-rock with a brand new Steely Dan live performance from 1974. This was an interesting iteration of The Dan, with the addition of Michael McDonald, Jeff Porcaro and Royce Jones. Without a doubt, Steely Dan is a Mermaid Lounge favorite.

We’ve Made It To Friday and We’ve Got John Fogerty, ‘The British Are Coming’ EP, and The Original All-Girl Revue, July 12, 2024

Here we are again reporting from the cusp of the weekend here in The Mermaid Lounge with a John Fogerty Spotlight feature for starters. It keeps getting better from there.

Celebrate the Fourth With Songs About Being Free and Our New ‘Summer of Love Countdown’, Thursday, July 4, 2024

Good morning, freedom lovers! Should we truly be celebrating? Maybe not at this time, but we all know what we have to do and that’s all I’ll say in this venue. But every day is a good music day here in The Mermaid Lounge!

Here’s your Fourth of July musical lineup:

10:00 a.m. Free As A Bird: Various Artists

We start out the day with songs about being free, both politically and otherwise, with the Edgar Winter Group, Cream, Steve Winwood, The Beatles, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Jesse Winchester, The Byrds, Dusty Springfield, Bob Dylan, Delaney & Bonnie, Emmylou Harris, Joni Mitchell, Allen Toussaint, Chicago and more!

Before we begin, let’s dispel some musical misinformation. I often see the Summer of Love used in conjunction with 1969. That is incorrect. I think people make that association because of Woodstock. But the Summer of Love was actually in 1967. This is not a difference of opinion. This is a matter of historical fact. Full stop. Done. Now, we do have Summer of Love playlists already, but those are a bit different. This is a playlist of the biggest songs on the radio during the summer and into fall of 1967. The actual real Summer of Love. We’ll be focusing on the songs and artists from that musical time period over the next week or two.

We Close Out The Month With Wendy Waldman, The ‘Ladies Day Out’ EP, and Live Carole King, June 30, 2024

Good morning, musicologists. When we say nobody plays the women of music like we do, we mean it. And we back it up. It’s a Ladies Only kind of day here in The Mermaid Lounge.

Here’s your Sunday Funday lineup:

10:00 a.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Wendy Waldman

I dare say some may not know who Wendy Waldman is, but those who were enmeshed in the women of music during the seventies will. She was one of those women during an era where women banded together over music in the face of a totally male-dominated environment, and helped each other out by appearing on each other’s albums. It was certainly a great time in music. There was minimal competition among the women, and a whole lot of camaraderie. Wendy Waldman may not have been a ‘star’ in that sky, but she made some amazing albums and has a great voice, and her peers knew it. Tune her in.

1:00 p.m. Ladies Day Out: Various Artists

We close the month with one of our favorite EP’s featuring Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Carly Simon, Emmylou Harris, Petula Clark, Laura Nyro, Cilla Black, Irma Thomas, Aretha Franklin, Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Etta James, Janis Joplin, Carole King, Maria Muldaur, Lucinda Williams, Rosanne Cash, Eva Cassidy, Wendy Waldman, Shawn Colvin, The Ronettes, The Supremes, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Norah Jones, Phoebe Snow, Nicolette Larson, Sheryl Crow, Susan Tedeschi, Valerie Carter, Dusty Springfield, Dolly Parton and more!

Billed as the ‘Home Again’ show, it was all that. Carole King is a legend in the annals of women’s music, starting out as a songwriter in the famous Brill Building. She then went on to build an amazing solo career highlighted by the release of Tapestry, a legendary album. We have her live from Central Park tonight.
