4:00 p.m. Poco Live at Fairleigh-Dickerson University, Teaneck, NJ, November 2, 1973

Without a doubt, Poco was one of the very first country-rock bands on the planet. Today we’ve got them live from Fairleigh-Dickerson University and broadcast on KBFH, New Jersey.

8:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of The Eagles

One of those other pioneering bands, who eventually morphed into a great rock band. But here in The Mermaid Lounge, our favorite time with the Eagles were their early country-rock years.

We’re here 24/7 and we’re totally free. No strings. No lies. No bait-and-switch. We’re all about the music. The button is below.

Saturday Brings Our ‘Ode To Morning’ EP, The Pre-Disco Bee Gees, and The Allman Brothers Band, October 26, 2024

Welcome Weekenders! Today we open with our ‘Ode to Morning’ multi-artist EP, followed by the Bee Gees In The Spotlight and The Allman Brothers Band in concert later.

Here’s your Saturday lineup:

9:00 a.m. Ode To Morning: Various Artists

We start the day with the sun coming up and songs about the morning from Hoyt Axton, Yusuf/Cat Stevens, The Beatles, Neil Young, The Rascals, Waylon Jennings, Joan Baez, James Taylor, Graham Parson, Taj Mahal, Simon & Garfunkel, Linda Ronstadt, Harry Chapin, Dan Fogelberg, Three Dog Night, Ry Cooder, Tim Buckley, Muddy Waters, Bob Dylan, Jonathan Edwards, Badfinger, Townes Van Zandt, Chris Hillman and more!

There are a lot of before-and-after bands, like The Doobies before Michael McDonald (the old Doobies were better). Before the Bee Gees somehow managed to immerse themselves in disco, there was a really great and innovative rock band in there. That is the band we celebrate with this playlist. You won’t hear Stayin’ Alive here or any other Bee Gees music from that phase. That’s a promise.

8:00 p.m. The Allman Brothers Band Live at The Atlanta International Pop Festival, Middle Georgia Raceway, Byron, GA, July 3-5, 1970

The Brothers bring it to the Atlanta International Pop Festival to close out Saturday’s musical festivities. But the music continues 24/7.

We’ve made it to the weekend, my friends, and that is always a good thing. After today, I get two days off so that I can start lining up next week’s music. We’re on 24/7. We’re totally free. The button is below.

It’s the ‘Are You Ready For The Country’ EP, and ‘Live’ Jackson Browne and Gov’t Mule on Saturday, October 12, 2024

Welcome, weekenders! Here we sit on a very early Saturday morning giving you the lowdown on today’s musical feast which includes our big country EP to start it off!

Here’s your musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. Are You Ready for The Country: Various Artists

No. We do not play Jason Aldean. But we do play real country and the artists who fused country with rock, like The Eagles, Asleep at The Wheel, Hank Williams, The Byrds, Patsy Cline, Neil Young, Emmylou Harris, Guy Clark, Steve Earle, Dolly Parton, Poco, Linda Ronstadt, Alison Krauss & Union Station, The Marshall Tucker Band, The Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Jerry Jeff Walker, New Riders of The Purple Sage, Carlene Carter, Rosanne Cash, The Desert Rose Band, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Townes Van Zandt, Kris Kristofferson, The Highwaymen, Gram Parsons, Tom Rush, The Flying Burrito Brothers, John Prine and more!

4:00 p.m. Jackson Browne Live at The Main Point, Bryn Mawr, PA, August 15, 1973

October 9 wasn’t just John Lennon’s birthday. It was Jackson Browne’s 76th birthday as well. Today, we celebrate a singer-songwriter legend.

8:00 p.m. Gov’t Mule Live at Leverkeusener Jazztage, The Forum, Leverkusen, Germany, November 7, 2017

We close it out with Gov’t Mule in a live performance filmed for Germany’s Rockpalast television show.

Another weekend is upon us, and next week my vacation will be over and I’ll be back in hardware hell. But we remain a constant. The Music Mermaid will take over and deliver music free on a 24/7 basis with no commercial advertising. The button is below.

Friday Brings The Heartbreakers, Jimmy Cliff and Volume Three of Our ‘Love Street’ Series, October 4, 2024

Good morning, Tom Petty fans! Today begins our Petty weekend as we celebrate his life and musical legacy in all of its forms. It’s also the final installment of our ‘I See You Live on Love Street’ series…for now.

We’re nearly there (the weekend). And here’s your musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: Live and Loving It!

We open up with a few hours of what we consider The Heartbreakers’ best live performances. However, we do concede that this particular playlist could use a serious updating. We will tend to that soon. In the meantime, it’s still pretty great.

3:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Jimmy Cliff

To understand the importance of Jimmy Cliff all you need to do is read the opening paragraph of his Wikipedia entry: “James ChambersOM (born 30 July 1944), known professionally as Jimmy Cliff, is a Jamaican skarocksteadyreggae and soul musician, multi-instrumentalist, singer, and actor. He is the only living reggae musician to hold the Order of Merit, the highest honour that can be granted by the Jamaican government for achievements in the arts and sciences.” Feel free to read on and learn more!

We close out the night with our final installment of this Laurel Canyon playlist with Little Feat, Linda Ronstadt, Harry Nilsson, Gram Parsons, Leon Russell, Crabby Appleton, Rita Coolidge, Dan Fogelberg, the Souther, Hillman, Furay Band and more!

We’re on the case 24/7 at no cost to the listening public. And there are no commercial interruptions so other folks can sell you stuff you don’t really need. The button is below.

We Open With Our ‘Ode to Morning’ EP, Then We Have a New Turtles Spotlight Feature, and Clapton Live at The Baloise Sessions, Monday, September 23, 2024

Good morning, workers! You’re back at it today and so are we! We have a brand new Spotlight featuring The Turtles sandwiched between songs about morning and live Clapton!

Here’s your Monday, Monday lineup:

9:00 a.m. Ode To Morning: Various Artists

We closed with songs about the night, so it’s only fitting that we open with songs about morning today. You’ll hear Yusuf/Cat Stevens, The Beatles, Hoyt Axton, Neil Young, The Rascals, Joan Baez, Waylon Jennings, James Taylor, Gram Parsons, Simon & Garfunkel, Taj Mahal, Harry Chapin, Linda Ronstadt, Dan Fogelberg, Three Dog Night, Ry Cooder, Tim Buckley, Muddy Waters, Jonathan Edwards, Bob Dylan, Badfinger, Townes Van Zandt, Chris Hillman and more!

In the course of a decade, particularly the sixties, not every group is a groundbreaking group. Some bands just make great music and chart hits. That was The Turtles. They formed in L.A. in 1965 and by the end of the decade they were tearing up the charts. Today we put them In the Spotlight!

8:00 p.m. Eric Clapton Live at Event Halle, Basel, Switzerland, November 13 & 14, 2013

We close with Eric Clapton and his band live at The Baloise Sessions music festival in Switzerland.

Mondays do not have to be bad. We’re here to help get you through with great music 24/7 at absolutely no cost to you and with no commercial interruption. The button is below.

On Monday, Monday It’s Badfinger, Our ‘All Fired Up’ Playlist and The Beatles at The Hollywood Bowl on September 16, 2024

Good morning, musicologists! We return to the work week today, but we’ve got you covered from the music perspective, including some rare ‘live’ Beatles later!

Here’s your Monday, Monday music:

10:00 a.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Badfinger

This band was one of the best ever signed to Apple Records, with a string of great hits in the seventies beginning with Come And Get It which was written by Lennon-McCartney. But Pete Ham continued the hits with Day After Day and No Matter What. And who can forget the closing scenes of Breaking Bad and Pete Ham’s Baby Blue playing through the final scene?

4:00 p.m. All Fired Up: Various Artists

Not an EP, but darned close. You’ll hear Basia, Electric Light Orchestra, The Doors, The Rolling Stones, Joni Mitchell, Three Dog Night, Ann Peebles, the Marshall Tucker Band, Patti Smith, Hoyt Axton, Gram Parsons, Stevie Nicks, Steely Dan, Johnny Cash, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers and more!

The Beatles were not road warriors, mostly because they became frustrated that their music was not being ‘heard’ by the screaming, teeming masses. They remember the Hollywood Bowl performances fondly, however, even though their crowds were not the biggest by today’s standards. But back in 1964, 18,700 fans attending a concert was pretty formidable. The opening acts for this show were The Righteous Brothers and Jackie DeShannon.

We embark on another week together and we promise to do all we can to make your work week tolerable by offering up some of the best music on the planet. Yes, it’s all free 24/7 and there is absolutely no commercial advertising. The button is below.

Thursday Brings ‘Are You Ready For the Country’, the Burrito Brothers and a Hank Williams Spotlight, September 12, 2024

Thursday is a country kind of day on the programming end as we open with our ‘Are You Ready for The Country’ EP, then it’s the Burrito Brothers at The Avalon and a Spotlight featuring country legend Hank Williams.

Here’s your country comfort for the day:

9:00 a.m. Are You Ready For the Country: Various Artists

From the real country legends through those who helped pioneer country rock, you’ll hear The Eagles, Asleep at The Wheel, Hank Williams, The Byrds, Patsy Cline, Neil Young, Emmylou Harris, Guy Clark, Steve Earle, Dolly Parton, Poco, Linda Ronstadt, Alison Krauss & Union Station, the Marshall Tucker Band, The Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Jerry Jeff Walker, Carlene Carter, Rosanne Cash, The Desert Rose Band, Kris Kristofferson, Gram Parsons, John Prine, Tom Rush, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Townes Van Zandt, the Highwaymen and more!

4:00 p.m. The Flying Burrito Brothers Live at The Avalon Ballroom, San Francisco, CA, April 6, 1969

An opening performance with Gram Parsons at the helm as the brothers opened for The Grateful Dead on this date.

8:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Hank Williams

We close with a true country legend, one of the most influential singer-songwriters of the 20th century, and one of the founding fathers of rock and roll.

Get on it. In between all this country we give you our big, wide Open Stream of 27,000 songs on as 24/7 basis with no commercial interruption. The button’s below.

Friday Delivers The Drifters, Songs About Food and Our ‘Ode To Morning’ EP at Night. No kidding. August 23, 2024

Good morning, music lovers (and foodies also). We’ve got a great lineup on the cusp of the weekend, including a brand new Spotlight featuring The Drifters!

Here’s your musical lineup:

Here’s another one off my musical ‘to do’ list. We (luckily) pipe a sixties station in our store and I hear an awful lot of songs by this band every day. I finally got to the point where this simply had to get done. Originally assembled as the back-up band for Clyde McPhatter, The Drifters turned their fortunes into a career that spanned half a century and generated plenty of number ones. Today, they are In the Spotlight.

2:00 p.m. For Foodies Only: Various Artists

Another great multi-artist list (a shorter one) with songs about food from The Rolling Stones, Little Feat, Sam & Dave, Van Morrison, Led Zeppelin, Judy Collins, The Beatles, Steely Dan, Harry Nilsson, Cream, The Guess Who, Emmylou Harris, Lucinda Williams, Bob Dylan, The Kinks, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Eagles, The Flying Burrito Brothers and more!

7:00 p.m. Ode To Morning: Various Artists

We head into the nighttime hours with songs about the morning. Yes. But earlier in the week we opened the morning programming with songs about the night. It’s only fitting. You’ll hear Cat Stevens, Hoyt Axton, The Beatles, Neil Young, The Rascals, Waylon Jennings, Joan Baez, James Taylor, Gram Parsons, Simon & Garfunkel, Taj Mahal, Dan Fogelberg, Linda Ronstadt, Harry Chapin, Three Dog Night, Ry Cooder, Tim Buckley, Muddy Waters, Jonathan Edwards, Bob Dylan and more.

Country Sunday Brings The Flying Burrito Brothers, the ‘Are You Ready For The Country’ EP & Poco, August 11, 2024

Good morning, musicologists! We’re making it a country kind of Sunday with our big EP in between The Flying Burrito Brothers and the great little band called Poco, one of the first legit country-rock bands.

Here’s your Sunday Funday musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. The Flying Burrito Brothers Live at The Palomino Club, No. Hollywood, CA, June 8, 1969

We open with a band in the forefront of the country-rock genre; this version with both Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman.

1:00 p.m. Are You Ready For The Country: Various Artists

This afternoon, we’ve got country and country-rock filling up the airwaves with The Eagles, Asleep at The Wheel, Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, The Byrds, Emmylou Harris, Neil Young, Guy Clark, Steve Earle, Dolly Parton, Poco, Linda Ronstadt, Alison Krauss & Union Station, The Marshall Tucker Band, The Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Jerry Jeff Walker, Johnny Cash, Gram Parsons, John Prine, Tom Rush, Willie Nelson, Townes Van Zandt, Rosanne Cash, Carlene Carter, Kris Kristofferson, The Desert Rose Band and more!

This evening we debut a Spotlight featuring one of the very first legitimate country-rock bands on the music scene. Poco was born in 1968 out of the ashes left behind by the breakup of Buffalo Springfield. This is another long-standing item we can finally check off the list.

We’ve Got Our Big, Bad Country EP, The Eagles In the Spotlight and Live Steely Dan on Saturday, July 13, 2024

Good morning, weekenders! We’re got a great lineup for you today starting with our ‘Are You Ready for The Country’ EP with the best of real country musicians and the pioneers of country-rock.

Here’s your musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. Are You Ready for The Country: Various Artists

We’ve got the best of the best here with The Eagles, Asleep at The Wheel, The Byrds, Emmylou Harris, Neil Young, Guy Clark, Steve Earle, Dolly Parton, Poco, Linda Ronstadt, Alison Krauss & Union Station, the Marshall Tucker Band, The Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Jerry Jeff Walker, New Riders of The Purple Sage, Carlene Carter, Rosanne Cash, the Desert Rose Band, Kris Kristofferson, Gram Parsons, Patsy Cline, Hank Williams, Tom Rush, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Townes Van Zandt and more!

4:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of The Eagles

One of the legendary country-rock bands of the seventies takes center state in the spotlight this afternoon.

Tonight the focus shifts a bit to jazz-rock with a brand new Steely Dan live performance from 1974. This was an interesting iteration of The Dan, with the addition of Michael McDonald, Jeff Porcaro and Royce Jones. Without a doubt, Steely Dan is a Mermaid Lounge favorite.
