It’s Tuesday Bluesday With Gov’t Mule Live at Rockpalast, Paul Butterfield Live in Boston, and Our AOW, February 15, 2022

Good Morning, Bluesologists! We’ve got another Tuesday Bluesday on tap with some brand new ‘live’ Gov’t Mule (for the very first time here) and a vintage Butterfield performance from Boston, vintage 1966.

Gov’t Mule is Warren Haynes, Matt Abst, Danny Louis and Jorgen Carlsson

Here’s your Tuesday Bluesday line-up:

11:00 a.m. Gov’t Mule Live at Lever Kuesener Jazztag, Rockpalast, Germany, November 7, 2017 NEW!

This is our first Gov’t Mule music ever, and we’re excited to be adding this band, finally, to the rotation. They are not there yet, but we’ve got everything lined up to add. In the meantime, let this performance at Rockpalast whet your whistle!

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Laid Back by Gregg Allman

The second airing of Gregg Allman’s debut solo album, released in October 1973 is on tap for mid-afternoon. Not only do we have a total blues Tuesday, but there’s a connection between Gregg Allman and Warren Haynes, leader of Gov’t Mule and former Allman guitarist.

7:00 p.m. The Paul Butterfield Blues Band Live at The Unicorn Coffee House, Boston, MA, Spring, 1966

A classic band performing at one of Boston’s great small music venues of days gone by. I have fond memories of small Boston music venues. Jonathan Swift’s, The Harvard Square Theatre, and Passim’s Coffee Shop are just a few of those great venues which are now defunct. Too bad. We saw a lot of great people there.

Tuesday Bluesday is a great day to kick our tires and take us for a spin. Come on, folks. Just do it already. We do not cost you a penny on any day of the week. We are totally free 365 days a year, and with absolutely no commercial interruptions. What are you waiting for?

It’s Snowing Outside The Mermaid Lounge But The Music is Hot With Our New AOW by Gregg Allman and Our ‘Down in New Orleans’ EP, Sunday, February 13, 2022

Good Morning, Music Lovers! Well, here we are in New England. Yesterday it was 51 degrees and sunny. Today, it’s about 30 degrees colder and snowing. But it’s nice and warm here in The Mermaid Lounge and we’ve got some great programming on tap.

The Preservation Hall Jazz Band is just one of the bands and artists you’ll hear today!

Here’s your Sunday line-up:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Laid Back by Gregg Allman NEW!

This is the first solo album by Gregg Allman, the leader, songwriter and main vocalist of the venerated Allman Brothers Band. In fact, he worked on his debut album while working simultaneously on the Allman’s Brothers And Sisters album. It was released on Capricorn Records in October of 1973. The album resulted in two singles, Midnight Rider and Don’t Mess Up A Good Thing. Midnight Rider was also covered by the Allman Brothers Band, but Gregg Allman’s version remains my favorite.

3:00 p.m. Down In New Orleans: Various Artists

Saving this great playlist for Mardi Gras week is a thing of the past. It should be played more frequently than once a year. Not only will you hear music that is central to the culture of New Orleans, but you’ll hear from some mainstream artists who were born in New Orleans. You’ll hear the music of The Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Clifton Chenier, Lucinda Williams, Allen Toussaint, Dr. John, The Neville Brothers, Tony Joe White, Professor Longhair, Fats Domino, Irma Thomas. Allen Fontenot, Aaron Neville, Chance Bushman, The Daywalkers, The Boogaloo Swamis, Kermit Ruffins, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Magnolia Sisters, The Meters, Queen Ida and The Bon Temps, Boozoo Chavis, and more!

Get on the train, people. It’s about to pull out of the station and you don’t want to get left behind. We’ve got our usual worldwide weekend music lovers tuned in and it’s about time you joined them. It won’t cost you a penny. No lie here. We’re totally free, accept no advertising, and don’t spent a hell of a lot of time talking. We play music.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Ode To Billie Joe by Bobbie Gentry

Our next-to-last airing of this great album by the mysterious and talented Bobbie Gentry. I promise you’ll be hearing more of her in the coming weeks and months as she gains more ground in our standard rotation and playlists. Tune it in. Our final airing will be Saturday.

7:00 p.m. Gregg Allman Live at The House of Blues, New Orleans, Louisiana, December 31, 2012

Geils Band, Poco, Cat Stevens, Neil Diamond, Bonnie Raitt, The Beatles, The Traveling Wilburys, Joe Walsh, The Ronettes, Linda Ronstadt, Joni Mitchell, Emmylou Harris, Dr. John, Bob Dylan, Wilson Pickett, Steeler’s Wheel, Gregg Allman, Phoebe Snow, Sam Cooke, The Electric Prunes, Jimmy Cliff, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, and more!

6:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Magical Mystery Tour by The Beatles FINAL AIRING!

Today’s the final airing of Magical Mystery Tour, and album that started as an EP in the UK, but became a full-blown album here in the U.S. with the addition of their five singles released the same year as the movie. Tomorrow when you wake up, we’ll have a brand new album.

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at The Capitol Theatre, Port Chester, NY, with New Riders of The Purple Sage, November 8, 1970

Another rare repeat performance here for the boys, but a great one that hasn’t been aired here for quite a while. It’s like brand new (not that true Deadheads really care).

We’ve got a new look, and we’ll be introducing some new programming, but everything else remains the same. We’re free 24/7. We do not accept advertising, and we do not require a “subscription” from anybody. We ask for no personal information. All we ask is that you give us a listen. How difficult is that?

Good Morning, Musicologists! Today we give you another of our patented extended players, and pay homage to George Harrison (aka, Nelson Wilbury) who has been gone for twenty years now.

We put George Harrison In the Spotlight later.

Here’s Friday’s programming:

11:00 a.m. Here Comes The Night: Various Artists

Today we give you another uninterrupted extended playlist of great music that talks about the night in either the title, lyrics…or both. You’ll hear Warren Zevon, the J. Geils Band, Poco, Cat Stevens, Neil Diamond, Bonnie Raitt, The Traveling Wilburys, Joe Walsh, The Ronettes, Linda Ronstadt, Joni Mitchell, Emmylou Harris, Dr. John, Bob Dylan, (Wicked) Wilson Pickett, Gerry Rafferty & Steeler’s Wheel, Sam Cooke, Phoebe Snow, Gregg Allman, The Electric Prunes, Jimmy Cliff, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Beatles, and many more!

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of George Harrison

Monday of this week (November 29) marked the 20th anniversary of George Harrison leaving this planet. We may be a bit late, but we’re never a dollar short because money means nothing here in The Mermaid Lounge. Today we pay homage to Harrison as a Beatle, as the founder of The Traveling Wilburys, and as a solo artist.

Tom Petty once said of George Harrison, “I would assure all his fans that George was as beautiful as they pictured him. And maybe more.” Nothing else needs to be said here.

Before, in between, and after we have our untouchable wide Open Stream, circulating 27,000 songs and growing weekly. Tune us in. It’s all on us. No hidden fees. No personal information required. Just a couple of good ears and a computer tab will do it. (Oh, yeah, you can also listen on your phone.)

“Wildflowers” Live, Dylan Live at Budokan, and Our Rock, Ballads & Blues Playlist on March 12, 2021

Good Morning, Musicologists! We’ve got a great mix today. We’re back to the Wildflowers & All The Rest project, for starters. Then some live Dylan and one of our patented various artist playlists. In between, there’s all that great Open Stream.

It’s Bob. Need I say more?

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Tom Petty’s Wildflowers & All The Rest: Live Wildflowers

We go back to the great Wildflowers box set this morning for a selection of the best Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers live performances as chosen by his family, bandmates and friends. We miss this guy here in The Mermaid Lounge.

3:00 p.m. Bob Dylan Live at Budokan, Tokyo, Recorded February 28 & March 1, 1978

Tom Petty and his bandmates once said that they learned the art of improvisation on stage from going on tour with Bob Dylan. He taught them well because they were one of the best damned live bands I’ve ever seen. Bob Dylan is a master craftsman in so many ways.

7:00 p.m. Rock, Ballads & Blues: Various Artists

We haven’t aired this one for a while, so it’s time has come around once again. You will hear songs from Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Dusty Springfield, J.J. Cale, Ry Cooder, Gregg Allman, Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band, Van Morrison, Linda Ronstadt, Waylon Jennings, Emmylouo Harris, and more.

We’ve got a lot of people on this morning from all over the world…Denmark, Estonia, Italy, Greece…where are you this morning? All you need is a free browser tab and your finger. What you don’t need is your wallet.

Badfinger In The Spotlight, New ‘Live’ Linda Ronstadt, The Allman Brothers Band, and The Shadow on Monday, January 25, 2021

Good Morning from The Mermaid Lounge where we offer up some of the best damned music on the planet every single day. Today, we’ve got some new live Linda Ronstadt for you.

Today’s highlight is new ‘live’ Linda Ronstadt from The Record Plant and broadcast on KSAN Radio!

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Badfinger

Badfinger was one of the truly bonafide hit groups ever signed by Apple Records, and a great power pop band. Their story is quite tragic because they were screwed over by their manager, but they made some truly great music in their time.

3:00 p.m. Linda Ronstadt Live at The Record Plant, Sausalito, California (1973) NEW!

Seek and ye shall find. That is our motto here in The Mermaid Lounge, and this is the beginning of some great new stuff coming your way. Here we have Linda Ronstadt live from The Record Plant with some classic stuff from her early solo career. This was broadcast live on KSAN Radio.

7:00 p.m. The Allman Brothers Band Live at The Atlanta International Pop Festival, July 3-5, 1970

Simply one of the greatest bands in music history and certainly pioneers of that Southern rock sound. And could they play the blues? Damned straight they could. But it wasn’t just about the legendary guitarist Duane Allman. It was about Gregg Allman, the band’s songwriter and the man who kept them going after Duane’s tragic death.

10:00 p.m. The Shadow: 09 Murder On Approval NEW!

This is certainly appropos at this particular time in history. This is the one about a germ released near military installations, designed to kill soldiers so that the U.S. is left open to invasion. It’s up to The Shadow to save our sad, sorry asses.

Tune us in, people. You have no idea what you’re missing until you do. This one is on you.

Gregg Allman Live at The House of Blues, Linda Ronstadt’s WE RAN, and We Celebrate Dave Grohl’s Birthday Later, January 14, 2021

Yes, Musicologists, it is a momentous day here at #BecomeUngovernable Radio. We have managed to celebrate someone’s birthday on time. See. Miracles are possible.

Gregg Allman was a pioneer in Southern Rock, and every bit as important to the Allman Brothers as his brother, Duane.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Gregg Allman Live at The House of Blues, New Orleans, December 31, 2012

I never understood people in the musical know who continue to debate which Allman was more important to The Allman Brothers. The simple answer is both of them. Duane was indeed one of those rare guitar gods. No question about it. But after his death, it was Gregg that held the band together. He was the songwriter, the arranger, and had an amazing voice. Today we have him live from The House of Blues in NOLA.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: We Ran by Linda Ronstadt

If you haven’t tuned this one in yet, I must tell you we are working on our second to last airing here on Thursday. This is Ronstadt’s most eclectic rock album, in my opinion, in spite of the fact that it come towards the twilight of her rock n’ roll career.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of The Foo Fighters

Today we are celebrating the birthday of Dave Grohl, singer and drummer for Nirvana, frontman for Foo Fighters, and near-drummer for Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. (It worked out for all. Grohl got to start a great new band; the Heartbreakers got the amazing Steve Ferrone on drums.) Today we put Dave Grohl and The Foos in the spotlight.

Here we are toiling through another week. I have no idea how anyone does this without music. Listen, we don’t cost you a penny. We’re free. No credit card and no personal information required. Just pull up a tab.

Goooood Morning From The College of Rock n’ Roll Knowledge: 12/8/2020

We’re back at the salt mines today with the general buying public, so we’re off to an early start this morning. I don’t have to tell true Beatles fans what happened on this day all those years ago.

Everything that has to be said about this day of infamy has been said.

Here’s today’s lesson from The Mermaid Lounge:

December 8, 1961: The Supremes begin recording their third single, Your Heart Belongs To Me, written by Smokey Robinson.

December 8, 1967: The Beatles release the Magical Mystery Tour double EP in the UK.

Also on this day, Traffic released their debut album, Mr. Fantasy.

And, The Rolling Stones’ Their Satanic Majesties Request album was released in the UK, which carried the hit She’s a Rainbow.

December 8, 1968: Graham Nash leaves The Hollies and begins working with David Crosby (ex-Byrds) and Stephen Stills (ex-Buffalo Springfield). Crosby, Stills, and Nash would release their self-titled debut album during the summer of 1969.

December 8, 1969: The Beatles record the Ringo Starr composition, Octopus’s Garden.

Meanwhile, at his trial in the Toronto Supreme Court for possession of hash and heroin, Jimi Hendrix testified that he had “outgrown” drugs. He was found not guilty after eight hours of deliberation.

December 8, 1972: Carly Simon’s album No Secrets is certified gold.

December 8, 1980: A day that will live in infamy. Mark David Chapman pumps five bullets into John Lennon outside The Dakota Apartments in New York City, killing him. It is reported in some outlets that he tries to get into his apartment to see his son before he collapses and dies. Later, Chapman would say the lure of the fame this event would bring was something he couldn’t resist. Fucker. RIP, John Lennon. The world misses you.

We put John Lennon In The Spotlight this evening.

Born On This Day

December 8, 1939: Jerry Butler (lead singer of The Impressions) was born in Sunflower, Mississippi. He moved to Chicago where he sings in a choir with his future Impressions bandmate, the great Curtis Mayfield.

December 8, 1941: Bobby Elliot, drummer for The Hollies, was burn in Burnley, Lancashire, England.

December 8, 1943: Jim Morrison, leader of The Doors, was born James Douglas Morrison in Melbourne, Florida.

December 8, 1947: Gregg Allman of The Allman Brothers Band was born in Nashville, Tennessee. Much is made of Duane Allman, and he was the initial leader of the band before his death, and played that guitar like no other. But Gregg Allman was the guy who wrote the songs and had that great singing voice.

And that is today’s lesson from The College. We’ll be back with today’s line-up soon!

Gregg Allman at the HOB, Dusty Springfield in the Spotlight, Little Feat at Ebbets Field, and the Heartbreakers in Oakland, Wednesday, October 30, 2019

Good Morning, Ungovernables! It is with great sadness that we say farewell to Paul Barrere, longtime guitarist and vocalist with Little Feat, who passed from this world on October 26. We celebrate Paul and Little Feat today.
