The second airing of Gregg Allman’s debut solo album, released in October 1973 is on tap for mid-afternoon. Not only do we have a total blues Tuesday, but there’s a connection between Gregg Allman and Warren Haynes, leader of Gov’t Mule and former Allman guitarist.

A classic band performing at one of Boston’s great small music venues of days gone by. I have fond memories of small Boston music venues. Jonathan Swift’s, The Harvard Square Theatre, and Passim’s Coffee Shop are just a few of those great venues which are now defunct. Too bad. We saw a lot of great people there.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Laid Back by Gregg Allman NEW!

This is the first solo album by Gregg Allman, the leader, songwriter and main vocalist of the venerated Allman Brothers Band. In fact, he worked on his debut album while working simultaneously on the Allman’s Brothers And Sisters album. It was released on Capricorn Records in October of 1973. The album resulted in two singles, Midnight Rider and Don’t Mess Up A Good Thing. Midnight Rider was also covered by the Allman Brothers Band, but Gregg Allman’s version remains my favorite.

3:00 p.m. Down In New Orleans: Various Artists

Saving this great playlist for Mardi Gras week is a thing of the past. It should be played more frequently than once a year. Not only will you hear music that is central to the culture of New Orleans, but you’ll hear from some mainstream artists who were born in New Orleans. Badfinger was one of the truly bonafide hit groups ever signed by Apple Records, and a great power pop band. Their story is quite tragic because they were screwed over by their manager, but they made some truly great music in their time.

Seek and ye shall find. That is our motto here in The Mermaid Lounge, and this is the beginning of some great new stuff coming your way. Here we have Linda Ronstadt live from The Record Plant with some classic stuff from her early solo career. This was broadcast live on KSAN Radio.

7:00 p.m. The Allman Brothers Band Live at The Atlanta International Pop Festival, July 3-5, 1970

Simply one of the greatest bands in music history and certainly pioneers of that Southern rock sound. And could they play the blues? Damned straight they could. But it wasn’t just about the legendary guitarist Duane Allman. It was about Gregg Allman, the band’s songwriter and the man who kept them going after Duane’s tragic death.

10:00 p.m. The Shadow: 09 Murder On Approval NEW!

This is certainly appropos at this particular time in history. This is the one about a germ released near military installations, designed to kill soldiers so that the U.S. is left open to invasion. It’s up to The Shadow to save our sad, sorry asses.

Gregg Allman was a pioneer in Southern Rock, and every bit as important to the Allman Brothers as his brother, Duane.

I never understood people in the musical know who continue to debate which Allman was more important to The Allman Brothers. The simple answer is both of them. Duane was indeed one of those rare guitar gods. No question about it. But after his death, it was Gregg that held the band together. He was the songwriter, the arranger, and had an amazing voice. Today we have him live from The House of Blues in NOLA.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: We Ran by Linda Ronstadt

If you haven’t tuned this one in yet, I must tell you we are working on our second to last airing here on Thursday. This is Ronstadt’s most eclectic rock album, in my opinion, in spite of the fact that it come towards the twilight of her rock n’ roll career.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of The Foo Fighters

Today we are celebrating the birthday of Dave Grohl, singer and drummer for Nirvana, frontman for Foo Fighters, and near-drummer for Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. (It worked out for all. Grohl got to start a great new band; the Heartbreakers got the amazing Steve Ferrone on drums.) Today we put Dave Grohl and The Foos in the spotlight.

Goooood Morning From The College of Rock n’ Roll Knowledge: 12/8/2020

We’re back at the salt mines today with the general buying public, so we’re off to an early start this morning. I don’t have to tell true Beatles fans what happened on this day all those years ago.

Everything that has to be said about this day of infamy has been said.

Here’s today’s lesson from The Mermaid Lounge:

December 8, 1961: The Supremes begin recording their third single, Your Heart Belongs To Me, written by Smokey Robinson.

December 8, 1967: The Beatles release the Magical Mystery Tour double EP in the UK.

Also on this day, Traffic released their debut album, Mr. Fantasy.

And, The Rolling Stones’ Their Satanic Majesties Request album was released in the UK, which carried the hit She’s a Rainbow.

December 8, 1968: Graham Nash leaves The Hollies and begins working with David Crosby (ex-Byrds) and Stephen Stills (ex-Buffalo Springfield). Crosby, Stills, and Nash would release their self-titled debut album during the summer of 1969.

December 8, 1969: The Beatles record the Ringo Starr composition, Octopus’s Garden.

Meanwhile, at his trial in the Toronto Supreme Court for possession of hash and heroin, Jimi Hendrix testified that he had “outgrown” drugs. He was found not guilty after eight hours of deliberation.

December 8, 1972: Carly Simon’s album No Secrets is certified gold.

December 8, 1980: A day that will live in infamy. Mark David Chapman pumps five bullets into John Lennon outside The Dakota Apartments in New York City, killing him. It is reported in some outlets that he tries to get into his apartment to see his son before he collapses and dies. Later, Chapman would say the lure of the fame this event would bring was something he couldn’t resist. Fucker. RIP, John Lennon. The world misses you.

Born On This Day

December 8, 1939: Jerry Butler (lead singer of The Impressions) was born in Sunflower, Mississippi. He moved to Chicago where he sings in a choir with his future Impressions bandmate, the great Curtis Mayfield.

December 8, 1941: Bobby Elliot, drummer for The Hollies, was burn in Burnley, Lancashire, England.

December 8, 1943: Jim Morrison, leader of The Doors, was born James Douglas Morrison in Melbourne, Florida.

December 8, 1947: Gregg Allman of The Allman Brothers Band was born in Nashville, Tennessee. Much is made of Duane Allman, and he was the initial leader of the band before his death, and played that guitar like no other. But Gregg Allman was the guy who wrote the songs and had that great singing voice.
