When his first song was released, Tutti Frutti, it was an immediate number one. This was followed by another number one, Long Tall Sally. After that, he released fifteen more singles in just three years. He is one of our Founding Fathers.

Gram Parsons was a country-rock legend, although he did not live long enough to reap his rewards, dying at the young age of 27. A member of The Byrds, The International Submarine Band, and The Flying Burrito Brothers, Gram Parsons was a pioneer in the fusion of country and rock.

This was a stop on the Think Fast Tour, and it’s brand new to our rotation. Steely Dan is, without a doubt, a seventies favorite here in The Mermaid Lounge.

We’re dusting this one off after a long winter’s nap. It’s time to break it out! Believe it or not, these guys met in elementary school in 1953 and began writing songs together. They are one of the best-selling groups of the 1960s, and songs like Sound of Silence, Mrs. Robinson, and Bridge Over Troubled Water reached number one on music charts worldwide. More than half a million people showed up in New York’s Central Park in 1981, which remains one of the most widely attended concerts in music history. What is not to love about these guys? They ‘ve made some of the best music on the planet, whether together or solo. But today, they are Simon & Garfunkel.

We haven’t heard this for a while, and it is definitely time to break it out into the open again. Born Ronald Clyde Crosby, our friend Jerry Jeff knew he couldn’t cut it as one of the leaders of the country outlaw movement with that name. He is best known for writing the song Mr. Bojangles, but he was much more than that. My personal favorite album is It’s A Good Night For Singin’ and my all-time favorite JJW song is Very Short Time. Like it or not, we’re all on short time here.

Yes, it’s true. This is the very first time we put The Who In the Spotlight here in The Mermaid Lounge. I confess a love-hate relationship with The Who, although I have long been a fan of their music. I saw them back in the day at Boston Garden. It was the night that Keith Moon collapsed on his drum set and the show had to be rescheduled. We saw them again and they were great. Moon would pass away not long after that. I am happy I saw them once, but I am thoroughly ambivalent about seeing them live ever again. In spite of that, this is a great playlist of their best stuff, and it’s formidable.

7:00 p.m. The Beatles Complete Apple Rooftop Concert, London, UK, January 30, 1969

It was short and, oh, so sweet. I would love to have been there for the final live performance ever by the Fab Four. The city was at a standstill, people were getting out of their cars to listen, and the Bobbies were clearly trying to figure out where the music was coming from. It was a great way to go out, as they say.

We’ve got a band here that helped pioneer the marriage between country and rock playing at a legendary venue. My Father’s Place at The Roslyn Hotel opened in 1971 and “created a scene that would influence music for decades to come,” according to the New York Times. They were spot on.

I remember seeing this guy one very cold, snowy night as my friends and I were freezing our asses off running round Harvard Square in Cambridge getting stoned. We were freezing and one of the greatest music venues, Passim’s Coffee House, was open and serving stuff that was warm. We went in. The cover wasn’t expensive, so we took a table. And when Guy Clark came out, someone we’d never heard before, we had our minds completely blown. He’s been a favorite ever since, and is certainly one of the greatest singer-songwriters I’ve ever experienced.
