Kris Kristofferson retired from the music business in 2020, but along the way he wrote some amazing songs and helped put some great singers on the map, like Me & Bobby McGee, Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down, and For The Good Times, all hits for other artists. He also had a successful solo recording career, releasing more than 20 albums and reaching number one in 1972 with the brilliant Jesus Was A Capricorn. Kristofferson was also a member of The Highwaymen with Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash, a supergroup that was instrumental in the success of the ‘outlaw’ country music movement of the seventies. This week Kristofferson is our featured singer-songwriter.

Maria Muldaur is undoubtedly one of the most underappreciated singers of her generation, hanging out with her peers Linda Ronstadt and Bonnie Raitt, among others. They knew who to tap for background and harmony vocals, and vice versa. On this release, she works with some of the best, including Bonnie Raitt, John Sebastian (founder of The Lovin’ Spoonful), Taj Mahal, and fellow blues singers Angela Strehli and Tracy Nelson.

Malcolm John Rebennack Jr., also known as Dr. John or The Nitetripper, was a musical treasure whose style combined New Orleans blues, jazz, funk, and R&B. He was active in the business, both as a respected session man and as a solo artist, from the 1950’s right up until his death in 2019. He was originally inspired after seeing another New Orleans fixture, Professor Longhair, live in concert. Tonight, we introduce the late, great Dr. John as our featured singer-songwriter.

Steve Winwood is a legend in these here parts. He spent his early musical years in the Spencer Davis Group, Blind Faith and Traffic before embarking on a successful solo career. I saw him live at what was then called The Tweeter Center in Mansfield, Massachusetts, many years ago out in the open air and it was a fantastic show. This was Winwood’s fifth solo studio album and it was his most commercially successful. It went to No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard 200 and sold three million copies. It’s our Album of The Week.
