This is the infamously great concert with Valerie Carter as the opener and on stage with Linda backing her up during the main event. The good music fairy was shining down that day. It’s not often you get to see two great singers together on the same stage, but I was fortunate on this particular night.

3:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of John Prine

John Prine was a genuine original, a country-folk singer-songwriter who often used his great wit and introspection to write (sometimes) humorous songs containing elements of protest and social commentary. I was fortunate to see him once during my lifetime (and his), but wish it had been more. We own all of his material here in The Mermaid Lounge and we’ll play it for you later today.

There are supergroups, then there are SUPERGROUPS. This one is in the latter category. Every poll I’ve seen taken in every music magazine and on every music website puts The Traveling Wilburys at the top of the supergroup heap, and we here in The Mermaid Lounge wholeheartedly agree. It started with George Harrison needing to record a “B side” for a release. The rest is history. You can read about it here.

Folk music is an amazing genre. I remember when folk music purists were upset the day Bob Dylan picked up an electric guitar. Dylan changed the face of folk and made it much more accessible to many people who may have ignored it. You’ll hear Bob Dylan in this EP. We lost John Prine’s voice early in the COVID-19 battle. He had already been fighting cancer and just couldn’t withstand another illness on top of it. But John Prine left behind a great musical legacy, his compositions a combination of wit and introspection. Today we put him In the Spotlight where he belongs.

Eric Clapton’s Baloise Session performances from 2013 in Basel, Switzerland. Joining him on stage in his band were Andy Fairweather-Low (vocals, guitar), Paul Carrack (vocals, keyboard), Henry Spinetti (drums), Chris Stainton (keyboard), and Michelle John and Sharon White (backing vocals).

7:00 p.m. The Beatles: The Transformative Years

Along with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Beatles are our reigning house band. We work very hard to try not to overplay either band or show favoritism, and this is difficult. 11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Love Stinks by The J. Geils Band NEW!

The J. Geils Band is a Boston favorite, and this one has been a long time coming. I know it’s sacrilege in these parts, but I prefer the music of the J. Geils Band to Aerosmith any day of the week. Just a personal observation. The band was formed back in 1967 in Worcester, Massachusetts under the leadership of guitarist John “J” Geils, and featured one Peter Wolf on vocals. This is my favorite J. Geils album.

3:00 p.m. Folk Music From A to Z: Various Artists EXPANDED & UPDATED!

We’ve elevated this playlist up to the level of our Sixties, Girls Day Out, and British playlists, with nearly five hours of old, traditional, and newer artists contributing. You’ll hear Woody Guthrie, Arlo Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Linda Ronstadt & The Stone Poneys, Bonnie Raitt, John Prine, Tom Rush, Jackson Browne, Odetta, Leadbelly, Janis Ian, Tim Hardin, Jesse Winchester, and many others! Dylan’s first new release in 8 years is his perspective on the assassination of John F. Kennedy or, as I refer to it, the beginning of our end. This is the first Dylan song to top the Billboard charts in his career (not that he ever gave a shit about that), a testament to both of their legacies.

4:00 p.m.   In the Spotlight: The Music of John Prine  NEW!

Singer-Songwriters aren’t easy to come by, and we lost one of the most revered of his generation this week. John Prine’s Angel From Montgomery remains Bonnie Raitt’s defining tune to this day.
