We’re at Midweek With the ‘Ode To Morning’ EP, Jagger & Richards, and a Trip to Soulsville, U.S.A., Wednesday, September 13, 2023

Good morning, music lovers. We’re at the mid point of the week and we’ve got our ‘Ode To Morning’ EP to start off, followed by our singer-songwriters and a tribute to Stax Records!

Here’s the midweek lineup:

9:00 a.m. Ode To Morning: Various Artists

We’ve already had our ode to the night time, now it’s time for morning with Cat Stevens, Hoyt Axton, The Beatles, Neil Young, The Rascals, Waylon Jennings, Joan Baez, James Taylor, Gram Parsons, Simon & Garfunkel, Taj Mahal, Dan Fogelberg, Linda Ronstadt, Harry Chapin, Three Dog Night, Ry Cooder, Tim Buckley, Muddy Waters, Jonathan Edwards, Bob Dylan, Townes Van Zandt, Pure Prairie League, Badfinger, Chris Hillman and more!

4:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Mick Jagger & Keith Richards

Rumor has it these two guys can’t really stand each other. Who knew? And who knows if that’s true in the Land of Misinformation? Here’s what I do know: They’ve made a hell of a lot of great music together. Let’s leave it at that.

We pay homage to Stax Records, home of Booker T. & The MG’s, who actually started out as the official Stax House Band playing behind all those great R & B artists before becoming legends in their own right. You’ll also hear Sam & Dave, Carla Thomas, Otis Redding, Eddie Floyd, The Delfonics, The Dramatics, Albert King and Rufus Thomas.

It’s a Blue Monday Here in The Mermaid Lounge, and We’ve Got Booker T. & The MG’s In the Spotlight, September 11, 2023

Fats Domino sang about hating Blue Mondays, but here in The Mermaid Lounge, we love them. Today we’ve got our ‘All About Blue’ playlists and the Stax House Band, Booker T. & The MG’s In the Spotlight later!

Here’s your Blue Monday lineup:

11:00 a.m. All About Blue, Volume One: Various Artists

3:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Booker T. & The MG’s

Booker T. & the MG’s were an American instrumental R&B/funk band that was not only the Stax Records House Band, but was also influential in shaping the sound of Southern soul and Memphis soul. The original members of the group were Booker T. Jones, Steve Cropper, Lewie Steinberg, and Al Jackson Jr. Today we put them In the Spotlight.

7:00 p.m. All About Blue Too: Various Artists

We continue on the blue theme this evening with a whole new set of characters including Laura Nyro, Robert Johnson, Steve Earle & The Dukes, The Doors, Van Morrison, Cream, Guy Clark, Canned Heat, The Smithereens, Emmylou Harris, Bob Dylan, The Kinks, Little Feat, B. B. King, Buddy Guy and more!

Living is Easy With “Red Rose Speedway” as Our AOW and the ‘Here Comes The Night’ EP on Sunday, September 10, 2023

Good morning, weekenders! We are fully entrenched in the weekend music scene as we give you Red Rose Speedway as our AOW and lean into our ‘Here Comes The Night’ EP later!

Here’s your Sunday Funday lineup:

This album perfectly signifies why I do not pay one iota of attention to music critics. Their opinions of albums — and all they are is opinions — is based on their personal experiences. Therefore, it’s up to me to evaluate albums for myself. And that’s what I do. Do I think every album we have chosen on this five-year journey has been a show-stopping tour de force? No. But that’s also not my criteria for choosing them. So, there. With Red Rose Speedway, we are giving you the bonus tracks that came from the re-release also.

3:00 p.m. Here Comes The Night: Various Artists

We’ve got our Here Comes The Night EP starting up this afternoon and taking you into the evening with Warren Zevon, the J. Geils Band, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Beatles, Them, Van Morrison, Patti Smith, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bruce Springsteen, The Kinks, Electric Prunes, Phoebe Snow, Joe Walsh, The Eagles, The Ronettes, John Cougar Mellencamp, The Doors, Emmylou Harris, Poco, Neil Diamond, The Animals, The Band, The Rolling Stones, Don McLean, Steve Winwood, Cat Stevens, the Traveling Wilburys, Sam Cooke, Jimmy Cliff, Bonnie Raitt and more!

Sunday is the official day of rest for the #BecomeUngovernable Radio Team. It should be for you too, so kick back, dump the shoes and pour yourself a drink. Tune us in for the best music around at no charge and with no commercial advertising.

The Sounds of Laurel Canyon, Jimmy Buffett’s Final AOW Airing, Jagger/Richards are the New Singer-Songwriters, Saturday, September 9, 2023

Good morning, musicologists! The weekenders are here and we’ve got some great stuff lined up starting early this morning. You’ll need to roll yourself out of bed early today!

Here’s where we’re at today:

9:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes by Jimmy Buffett FINAL AIRING!

I have said over the years and will continue to say over the rest of my time on earth that this is one of my favorite albums of all time. If we can call Jimmy Buffett’s attractiion ‘a feeling,’ then we can call this album all about ‘a feeling.’ It’s complicated, and we don’t care. Because deep down inside, we’re all Parrot Heads.

11:00 a.m. Music From Laurel Canyon: Various Artists UPDATE COMING SOON!

This is the music incubator for two generations of geniuses, including those who melded rock with country and folk. You’ll hear The Byrds, The Mamas & The Papas, Buffalo Springfield, The Beach Boys, The Doors, The Lovin’ Spoonful, Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell, The Monkees, CSNY, Manassas, John Mayall, The Eagles, J.D. Souther, Harry Nilsson, Canned Heat, Linda Ronstadt, Carole King, James Taylor, Joan Baez, Judy Collins, The Souther-Hillman-Furay Band and more!

How many songs have they given us? It’s still a mystery after all these years. Some say 165 songs, while others put it somewhere in the 300+ range. Why quibble? Either way, they’ve given us a boatload of great songs. They are this week’s featured singer-songwriters.

Here’s your musical lineup:

Songs with colors in the title, lyrics or both. Even the whiff of color puts it on this list with The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Elton John, Donovan, Booker T. & The MGs, Electric Light Orchestra, Procol Harum, Joni Mitchell, The Who, Amy Winehouse, Sam & Dave, Badfinger, Bob Dylan, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Elvis Costello, Neil Young, Jefferson Airplane, The Hollies, Elvis Presley, Janis Joplin, Cream, Marvin Gaye, Lucinda Williams, John Hiatt, J.D. We’ve got one more airing for you after today and that’ll be sometime on Saturday. Get on it while you can!

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young

Right there behind The Traveling Wilburys on my Supergroup Meter, although quite dysfunctional compared to The Wilburys. They are the original drama llamas of music, but that didn’t stop them from making some of the best stuff on the planet.

We’ve passed the midweek point now. It’s all downhill to the weekend from here. This is your opportunity to get there in style. We’re on 24/7 at no charge and turning on the tunes is hassle-free. Just push play.

Living is Easy on Sunday With Our New AOW From Jimmy Buffett and the ‘What’s In a Name’ Multi-Artist EP, September 3, 2023

Good morning, music lovers! It’s Sunday in The Mermaid Lounge and the living is easy with our brand new AOW from Jimmy Buffett (yes, this was on the list before his sad passing) and our ‘What’s In a Name’ multi-artist EP starting mid-afternoon.

Here’s your musical lineup:

Affectionately known as the Mayor of Margaritaville, Jimmy Buffett passed away on September 1. There was a lot of mystery surrounding his health prior to this, but it is now known that he passed form Merkel cell carcinoma, a rare form of skin cancer. Jimmy Buffett was a hell of a ride. If you’ve ever seen him ‘live’ you know his shows were a blast. He was a guy who took music seriously, but had a good time doing it and his ‘Parrotheads’ did as well.

I saw him at Fenway Park in Boston in the early 2000’s, the first time I’d ever seen a musical act at Fenway. It was unbelievable. I took a Buffett shamer with me to the show. Even he had a blast and confessed he went out and bought this very album after. This is as good an album as anyone has released. There isn’t a song we don’t like, and it was on our list from the beginning. I moved it up. Circumstances called for that.

3:00 p.m. What’s In a Name: Various Artists

A fun EP here with songs including names in the title, lyrics or both. Some people are real. Some people are not. You’ll hear Stevie Wonder, The Beatles, Them, Janis Joplin, Simon & Garfunkel, The Beach Boys, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Donovan, Steve Winwood, Bonnie Raitt, Shawn Colvin, Carly Simon, Warren Zevon, Laura Nyro, Bobbie Gentry, The Kinks, Three Dog Night, The Association, Joni Mitchell, Badfinger, Linda Ronstadt, Steely Dan, Chi Coltrane, Bob Dylan, Rod Stewart, James Taylor, Tony Joe White and more!

We End the Month with Our ‘In Your Dreams’ EP, The Beach Boys’ AOW, and ‘Live’ Jackson Browne, Thursday, August 31, 2023

We end the month in fine style as we dream of fall in New England. We’ve got our ‘In Your Dreams’ EP to start things off.

Here’s your musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. In Your Dreams: Various Artists

Dreaming is a popular topic among songwriters as you will see when you pull up a comfy chair and listen to the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Aerosmith, Crowded House, the Moody Blues, Van Morrison, The Eurythmics, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Nanci Griffith, the Electric Prunes, Fleetwod Mac, Roy Orbison, Linda Ronstadt, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Mamas & The Papas, Jimmy Buffett, the Alan Parsons Project, the Allman Brothers Band, Supertramp, Randy Newman, Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, Widespread Panic, The Youngbloods, Jimmy Ruffin, Jackson Browne, Mudcrutch, Patsy Cline, Joe Walsh, Bruce Springsteen, k.d. lang, Dusty Springfield and more!

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys

Tune in to this great progressive rock album before it goes away. Saturday will be our final airing, time TBD.

7:00 p.m. Jackson Browne Live at The Main Point, Bryn Mawr, PA, August 15, 1973
