Emmylou Harris returns with our Album of The Week released on February 7, 1975 (my 21st birthday). This time it’s her second studio release and the first on a major label. It is a tour de force without a doubt. She covers songs by Dolly Parton, Lennon & McCartney, Charles & Ira Louvin, and Rodney Crowell, among others. But the most beautiful song on the album is one she co-wrote with Bill Danoff, Boulder To Birmingham, written for the great Gram Parsons, who passed in 1973.

Hell, it’s always a good day to tune in, turn on, and drop out as far as I’m concerned. Good morning, musicologists! Today we celebrate Mr. Petty’s posthumous Doctorate of Music from the U of Florida bestowed last week. It’s a little ray of light in a fascist state. We were also going to have a Mudcrutch Monday today, so we get the best of both worlds.

This was the 30th Anniversary Tour performance in Petty’s hometown of Gainesville, and a fine performance it was. We air this today to celebrate the honorary Doctorate in Music given to him last week by the University of Florida, where the entire stadium still sings I Won’t Back Down during the Gators’ home games. I am not a football l over, but when I saw that for the first time after his death, it gave me goosebumps.

We start the day and a new week with the first Mudcrutch album. This is the band that left Gainesville looking for musical fortune in L.A. It didn’t work out until later as the band split and morphed into Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers (we’re happy for that part). Later in 2008, Tom Petty reunited the original band and they finally found their place in the music world, releasing two albums and going on tour. Enjoy this one. They were a fine band in their own right.
