We Start the Week With Mudcrutch Monday Madness, J. Geils In the Spotlight, and Lukas Nelson & POTR Live Later, March 14, 2022

Good Morning, Mudcrutch Lovers everywhere! We haven’t had Monday Madness for a bit, so it’s time to bring it back to the airwaves. We kick things off at high noon today. Until then, it’s wide Open Stream!

It’s a Mudcrutch kind of Monday here in The Mermaid Lounge! (Photo by Dennis Callahan)

Here’s your musical line-up:

12:00 p.m. Mudcrutch Monday Madness!

Yes, we’re back with the entire Mudcrutch catalogue, including that great live version of Hungry No More recorded at Boston’s House of Blues in 2016. As someone in attendance that night said to me, “It was like the Second Coming.”

4:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of The J. Geils Band

Yeah, we have Boston’s original Bad Boys right here, Aerosmith notwithstanding. And we’re putting them In the Spotlight this afternoon.

7:00 p.m. Lukas Nelson & Promise of The Real Live at The Boathouse, Newport News, Virginia, June 14, 2020

Willie’s boy is back tonight with a great live performance. There’s a reason why Neil Young takes these guys on the road with him. See for yourself.

It’s a Monday. They’re rough on the psyche every week, but you’ll feel better with some good music to get you through the day. We’ve got it here. And at no charge whatsoever to you. Join your friends from The Netherlands, Ireland, Brazil, Faroe Islands, Portugal, the UK, Germany, France, Mexico, Peru, Spain, and points beyond today!

Saturday Brings a Mix of Our Usual and Our Tribute to The Women of Music, March 12, 2022

Good Morning, Music Lovers! Today is Saturday and, if you’ve been listening to us, you know this is the busiest programming day of the week. Today we’ve got a great mix of musical material for you.

We’ve got our soul and R & B EP for you today, and the women are well represented!

Here’s your musical line-up:

9:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Home Plate by Bonnie Raitt FINAL AIRING!

This is the final airing of this great Bonnie Raitt album, and we’re starting early this morning so I must get a move on. Needless to day, tomorrow we will have a new selection.

11:00 a.m. A Little Bit O’ Soul: Various Artists

This is a great multi-artist list paying homage to the great soul and R & B singers of our time. You’ll hear Aretha Franklin, The Temptations, The Ronettes, The Four Tops, Marvin Gaye, Ray Charles, Otis Redding, Jimy Ruffin, The Drifters, Chuck Berry, Stevie Wonder, Carla Thomas, James Brown, The Shirelles, Etta James, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Irma Thomas, Curtis Mayfield, The Staple Singers, LaVern Baker, Nina Simone, Edwin Starr, Fontella Bass, Sam Cooke, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, and more!

7:00 p.m. Linda Ronstadt: The Ballads

This could be described as Linda Ronstadt doing what she does best but, then again, she sings so many genres so well that it’s hard to stand definitively on one single style of music. She refused, from the beginning, to be pigeonholed. You’ll love this playlist and we haven’t heard it for a while.

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Morrison, Colorado, July 8, 1978 NEW!

We’ve aired The Dead’s 1985 Red Rocks show before, but this is a brand new soundboard recording of their 1978 show at Red Rocks, one of the most beautiful venues to catch a great jam band.

Come on, folks. It’s Saturday. While some of us continue to serve the entitled retail masses, you can be sitting back and enjoying all this great music for free. Yes, you heard that right. Or you read that right. We’re not going to bother you with subscriptions, credit cards, or take your personal information. I promise. No lie.

The Women Dominate the Day With Nina Simone, Joni Mitchell, and Bonnie Raitt, on Thursday, March 10, 2022

It’s International Women’s Week and we continue to celebrate here in The Mermaid Lounge. We have some great programming on tap for you today. So, come celebrate with us.

Bonnie Raitt, Joni Mitchell and Nina Simone represent the women of music today!

Here’s Thursday’s musical landscape:

11:00 a.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Nina Simone

Nina Simone was an American singer-songwriter, musician, arranger, and civil rights activist. Her musical style married many genres, including jazz, blues, folk, classical, gospel and pop, and is often referred to as The High Priestess of Soul.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Home Plate by Bonnie Raitt

We say this every week, so why stop now. We are winding down on this week’s Album of The Week. This will be the second-to-last airing of Home Plate, so time’s a wasting if you want to hear it here. Saturday will be the final airing before a new selection is made.

7:00 p.m. Joni Mitchell Live at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Morrison, CO, July 30. 1983

There are not many people who do not know Joni Mitchell. Her influence on pop music is legendary. She helped to expand and legitimize the folk music genre, but her repertoire covers many genres. In addition to folk music, Joni has drawn on pop, jazz, rock, and classical as she sings about romance and womanhood, as well as social and philosophical beliefs. She’s a woman of many musical styles and colors.

Come on, ladies. Get on this great International Women’s Week ride before the carnival is taken down. (Quite frankly, we consider every week women’s week, but we’re playing more than usual this week.) We run 24/7 at no charge to anyone; hell, we don’t even request personal information. Nor to we track it for our advertisers. And that’s because we do not accept advertising. Get the picture yet?

We Hit Our Midweek Stride With Our ‘Travelin’ Fever’ EP and Laura Nyro Live at The Fillmore, Wednesday, March 9, 2022

Good Morning, Travelers and Daydreamers. Today we’ve got our EP all about hitting the road, and we continue our celebration of the women of music with Laura Nyro.

Laura Nyro is one of the greatest singer-songwriters of her generation.

Here’s your midweek line-up:

10:00 a.m. Travelin’ Fever: Various Artists

When we were kids, my friends and I dreamed of buying a VW van and driving across country. We pretty much never made it out of the driveway, although we did drive to Nashville to visit the Grand Ole Opry. In this playlist you’ll hear Jackson Browne, Dan Fogelberg, The Box Tops, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Canned Heat, Bonnie Raitt, Bruce Springsteen, The Who, The Eagles, Janis Joplin, Del Shannon, Guy Clark, Asleep at the Wheel, Jesse Winchester, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Led Zeppelin, Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, Little Feat, Willie Nelson, the Marshall Tucker Band, Fats Domino and more!

7:00 p.m. Laura Nyro, Live at The Fillmore East, New York, NY, March 30, 1971

Sweet Blindness, Gonna’ Take a Miracle, Stoned Soul Picnic, Eli’s Coming…Laura Nyro wrote some brilliant songs that put others on the map. But there’s nothing quite like hearing her sing them herself. See for yourself tonight at 7:00 p.m.

We’re out there playing music for your listening pleasure 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. All totally free of charge, and we do not accept any advertising. We pay for this out of pocket as a labor of love. Tune us in. We’re not kidding here. No strings.

The Original Sixties Rotation EP, The Final Airing of “Revelator” and LIVE DEAD! Later, Saturday, March 5, 2022

Good Morning, Musicologists! It has certainly been a challenging week having to put in more hours than normal in retail hell, but hey, the music is fine here in The Mermaid Lounge.

We’ve got the ORIGINAL Sixties Rotation EP on tap for today!

Here’s Saturday’s line-up:

9:00 a.m. The Original Sixties Rotation: Various Artists

Today we bring you the music that inspired our little radio station and launched a new generation of music never to be equaled. You’ll hear The Monkees, Sonny & Cher, Mary Wells,, Dusty Springfield, Tommy James & The Shondells, The Drifters, The Beatles, Gerry & The Pacemakers, The Hollies, Petula Clark, Buddy Holly, The Kinks, Neil Diamond, The Band, The Yardbirds, The Searchers, The Rolling Stones, Donovan, Bob Dylan, The Temptations, The Beach Boys, and more.

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Revelator by Tedeschi Trucks Band FINAL AIRING!

Today we bid a fond farewell to Revelator, the great studio debut album by the Tedeschi Trucks Band. When you wake up on Sunday, we’ll have a brand new selection for you.

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at Assembly Hall, University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, IL, February 22, 1973 NEW!

Another great soundboard concert from the road warriors, this one from the University of Illinois. Remember, no two shows are ever the same…even on the same tour.

Great day to tune us in. Before, in between, and after, we have our great wide Open Stream courtesy of The Music Mermaid, who is always fully in charge and ready to go. We run on musical adrenalin 24/7 with no commercial interruptions and no endless DJ chatter. Just music.

We Close Out The Month With Music Banned On The Airwaves, The Animals, and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live, Monday, February 28, 2022

Good Morning, Music Lovers! February certainly is a short month, but we’re closing it out in style with some excellent programming, including a brand new playlists of songs banned ’round the world!

Hard to believe this song was banned, but that’s what happens when you “Imagine there’s no heaven.”

Here’s your musical programming for today:

11:00 a.m. Banned On The Airwaves: Various Artists NEW!

This certainly isn’t an EP, but it was fun to put together. Thanks to my compadre Dave Denton for the idea! These are songs that have been banned from different locations around the world, not just here in America. Some of them defy logic, I must say. For example, My Generation by The Who was banned by the BBC because they felt it was disparaging to people who stutter. Sailing by Rod Stewart was banned because of the war in the Falkland Islands (incidentally, this was not the only nautical song banned at this time). God Only Knows by the Beach Boys was banned because, well, God just wasn’t used in rock n’ roll music. This Note’s For You by Neil Young was banned because it was anti-capitalist.

In addition to these guys, you’ll hear Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers (yes, it’s true), The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Shirelles, Billy Joel, Paul Simon, Van Morrison, and more. There’s a list of songs and artists under the Playlist tab. Scroll down to the bottom. By the way, this is not an exhaustive list.

3:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of The Animals

The Animals were certainly one hell of a band. Steeped in R & B, the blues and rock, they were formed in Newcastle upon Tyne in the early sixties, then moved to London when they began to gain traction. Eric Burdon was the perfect lead vocalist for this band.

7:00 p.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live at The PPL Center, Allentown, PA, September 16, 2014

Speaking of great bands, we give you The Heartbreakers live on the Hypnotic Eye tour. It’s hard to believe that a band can produce such brilliant material over a forty-year span, but this album proved to be one of The Heartbreakers’ finest ever. Sadly, this would also be their final album ever as Tom Petty would prematurely pass into the great wide open a week after their 40th Anniversary Tour in 2017. Nevertheless, their music lives on eternally here in The Mermaid Lounge.

The set list for this show is also under the Playlist tab. Again, scroll down to the bottom.

Come on, folks. Music makes nearly all things tolerable. The only exception would be the GOP, but I digress and we don’t want to ruin the mood here. Hey, we’re anti-capitalist too. We don’t charge you anything to tune us in. We don’t ask for a credit card or personal information. In fact, we will have no bloody idea who you are. So do it.

We Spend Saturday With the Musicians of Laurel Canyon, Say Goodbye To “Meet The Beatles” and Hear LIVE DEAD! Later, February 26, 2022

Good Morning, Weekenders! We’ve got them on from all around the globe this morning, but our friends in Germany are far and away the most populous. We’ve got a great Saturday of programming lined up, so let’s not waste any time.

Today we spend time with the musical pioneers of the Laurel Canyon scene.

Here’s today’s musical landscape:

11:00 a.m. Music From Laurel Canyon: Various Artists

For two generations of musicians (the 60s and 70s), Laurel Canyon was the place to be. It was a commune of creative activity, with all of these guys feeding off each other musically to create some of the most amazing sounds and songs in popular music history. You’ll hear The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, The Doors, The Mamas & The Papas, The Monkees, The Lovin’ Spoonful, Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell, CSNY, Neil Young, Manassas, John Mayall, The Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, J.D. Souther, Bonnie Raitt, Canned Heat, The Eagles, Carole King, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor and more! This is just about five hours of uninterrupted music.

7:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Meet The Beatles by The Beatles FINAL AIRING!

We bid a fond farewell today to our Album of The Week, what I call the musical shot heard ’round the world. During his Musicares speech in 2017, Mr. Petty said when he heard The Beatles for the first time he had his eyes opened, like everybody else. We agree. Tomorrow, however, we will have a new selection.

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at The Fillmore East, New York, January 2, 1970 NEW!

We have featured several of The Dead’s road performances from the Fillmore West, but this is our first airing of a show from The Fillmore East, a venue that certainly doesn’t get as much attention as it’s West Coast counterpart, but a great venue that hosted some amazing acts as well. It was part of that cross-pollination project. This is another new soundboard recording. Enjoy.

Saturday is always a good day here in The Mermaid Lounge. This one is no exception. Hey, I have to serve the retail masses, but we’ve got you covered. Neither rain, nor sleet, nor snow, nor retail will break our stride. The Music Mermaid is in charge, baby, and she’s on top of this shit. So, tune us in. You don’t need a subscription or a credit card or anything else. Just a computer.

Saturday In The Mermaid Lounge Brings The ‘Ladies Day Out’ EP, the Final Airing of Our AOW, and LIVE DEAD! Later, February 19, 2022

Good Morning, Weekenders! Another Saturday has rolled around here in The Mermaid Lounge, and we’re just chock full of good musical programming for you today! Read on!

The women of music are large and in charge today here in The Mermaid Lounge!

Here’s today’s programming:

11:00 a.m. Ladies Day Out: Various Artists

Often overlooked, but never here in The Lounge. When I used to listen to regular rock music stations, the women of music were almost an afterthought. You’d have thought that Joan Jett and Stevie Nicks were the only female singers on the damned planet. In fact, women have delivered an awful lot of great music over the years and deserve their place in the spotlight. Today you’ll hear Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris, Carly Simon, Chrissie Hynde (The Pretenders), Petula Clark, Laura Nyro, Cilla Black, Irma Thomas, Aretha Franklin, Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Etta James, Janis Joplin, Carole King, Maria Muldaur, Susan Tedeschi, Phoebe Snow, Nicolette Larson, Valerie Carter, Eva Cassidy, Lucinda Williams, Wendy Waldman, Shawn Colvin, The Ronettes, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Norah Jones, Phoebe Snow, and many more! (There’s even some Stevie Nicks and Joan Jett.)

7:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Laid Back by Gregg Allman FINAL AIRING!

Today is the swan song for Gregg Allman’s Laid Back, his very first solo album. Tomorrow when you wake up, we’ll have a brand new selection for you.

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at Miami Arena, Miami, FL, October 26, 1989 NEW!

Another new soundboard recording from the ultimate road and jam band, this time with their infamous Wall of Sound. Get on it, people. It’s a Saturday night staple here in The Mermaid Lounge especially for Deadheads.

Before, after and in-between all this great program we have our wide Open Stream, courtesy of The Music Mermaid who, as you know, has impeccable taste. That’s why she’s here.

It’s Tuesday Bluesday With Gov’t Mule Live at Rockpalast, Paul Butterfield Live in Boston, and Our AOW, February 15, 2022

Good Morning, Bluesologists! We’ve got another Tuesday Bluesday on tap with some brand new ‘live’ Gov’t Mule (for the very first time here) and a vintage Butterfield performance from Boston, vintage 1966.

Gov’t Mule is Warren Haynes, Matt Abst, Danny Louis and Jorgen Carlsson

Here’s your Tuesday Bluesday line-up:

11:00 a.m. Gov’t Mule Live at Lever Kuesener Jazztag, Rockpalast, Germany, November 7, 2017 NEW!

This is our first Gov’t Mule music ever, and we’re excited to be adding this band, finally, to the rotation. They are not there yet, but we’ve got everything lined up to add. In the meantime, let this performance at Rockpalast whet your whistle!

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Laid Back by Gregg Allman

The second airing of Gregg Allman’s debut solo album, released in October 1973 is on tap for mid-afternoon. Not only do we have a total blues Tuesday, but there’s a connection between Gregg Allman and Warren Haynes, leader of Gov’t Mule and former Allman guitarist.

7:00 p.m. The Paul Butterfield Blues Band Live at The Unicorn Coffee House, Boston, MA, Spring, 1966

A classic band performing at one of Boston’s great small music venues of days gone by. I have fond memories of small Boston music venues. Jonathan Swift’s, The Harvard Square Theatre, and Passim’s Coffee Shop are just a few of those great venues which are now defunct. Too bad. We saw a lot of great people there.

Tuesday Bluesday is a great day to kick our tires and take us for a spin. Come on, folks. Just do it already. We do not cost you a penny on any day of the week. We are totally free 365 days a year, and with absolutely no commercial interruptions. What are you waiting for?

It’s Saturday in The Mermaid Lounge and We’ve Got Our ‘A Little Bit O’Soul’ EP, The Final Airing of The AOW, and LIVE DEAD Later, February 12, 2022

Good Morning, Weekenders! We’ve got a great Saturday of music planned for you, starting with our EP called ‘A Little Bit O’Soul’ which is actually a hell of a lot of soul.

Comin’ at ya starting at 11:00 a.m. EST!

Here’s your Saturday line-up:

11:00 a.m. A Little Bit O’ Soul: Various Artists

We’ve got five hours of uninterrupted soul and rhythm & blues coming at you today from Aretha Franklin, The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Ronettes, Marvin Gaye, Ray Charles, Otis Redding, Jimmy Ruffin, The Drifters, Chuck Berry, Stevie Wonder, Carla Thomas, James Brown, The Shirelles, Etta James, Curtis Mayfield, Sam & Dave, The Staple Singers, Nina Simone, LaVern Baker, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Edwin Star, Fontella Bass, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Sam Cooke and more!

7:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Ode To Billie Joe by Bobbie Gentry FINAL AIRING!

While we promise more from Bobbie Gentry, we’re sorry to report that this is the final airing of her debut album, Ode To Billie Joe. Get it while you can. We’ve already got our new choice lined up for tomorrow.

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at The Manhattan Center, New York, NY, April 5, 1971 NEW!

Yes, they are back for another week! We’ve been at this for a while and there’s no end in site for the world’s ultimate jam band. This is another good soundboard recording with more than three hours of Dead music.

As usual, we’ve got plenty of wide Open Stream before, in between and after. We run 24/7 totally free to all and we are worldwide. No hidden costs. No subscriptions. No personal information asked. Do it.
