10:00 a.m. Dylan and The Dead

Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead collaborate on some Dylan tunes both on vinyl and on the road. The team took to the road in 1987, and the album was released on February 6, 1986 by Columbia Records.

1:00 p.m. Across the Borderline: Bob Dylan with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

Bob Dylan and Tom Petty & The Hearbreakers decided to team up after Dylan complained that they never got anybody “cool” to open with. The rest is musical history, as two of the world’s greatest songwriters also became the best of friends, winding up in The Traveling Wilburys together (their playlist makes its debut on this station next week).

Across the Borderline is a record of Dylan and Petty live in Sydney Australia. There’s a great interview at the beginning of the playlist talking about how this collaboration all came about. It’s fascinating!

4:00 p.m. Martin Luther King: Why I Oppose the Viet Nam War

The mainstreamers always invokes “I Have a Dream” when someone asks about Dr. Martin Luther King’s speeches, but this is one of King’s most inspirational speeches ever. If ever we need some kind of anti-war voice, it’s now.

No matter where they played, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers paid homage to those who inspired them and had an effect on their success. Here, the Heartbreakers do their mentors proud covering Chuck Berry, The Beatles, The Grateful Dead and Bo Diddly. One of my favorite playlists EVAH.

8:00 p.m. Chris Hedges: Fascism in the Age of Trump

There are no solutions on eiher side, unfortunately. Many think Donald Trump was sent to “drain the swamp.” The exact opposite is true, despite those who remain delusional. Donald Trump is a product of a very sick system, much like his 2016 challenger, The Hillarious One. But make no mistake about it. Our present march to fascism, and it is happening, is being led by The Orange Scourge.

Linda Ronstadt turned 73 years old on July 15. Although Parkinsons Disease may have silenced her voice, she’ll always have a voice on #BecomeUngovernable Radio. Today, we pay homage with her live performance in Hollywood in 1980.

10:00 a.m. Mudcrutch Madness

For those of you who do not know who or what Mudcrutch is, this is the band that Tom Petty left Gainesville, Florida with on his quest to make the best fucking music on the planet. Mudcrutch didn’t have much success out there…until it morphed into Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. Petty brought Mudcrutch back together in 2009, and the result was quite different.

The politically-motivated imprisonment of Julian Assange and continued persecution of Chelsea Manning are issues of prime importance to us. This is an excellent and timely interview.

9:00 a.m. Steve Winwood and Eric Clapton Live From Madison Square Garden, February 2008

If ever two names defined “legendary,” these are the guys. Clapton has had an illustrious solo career, but started with Cream, the Yardbirds, Blind Faith, and Derek & The Dominoes. Winwood the same, having enjoyed time with the Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, and Blind Faith (with Clapton). This set is taken from their historic live performance at New York’s Madison Square Garden in February of 2008.

3:00 p.m. Chris Hedges on the Wages of Rebellion

In 2015, Chris Hedges wrote a book called The Wages of Rebellion: The Moral Imperative of Revolt. Although written for years ago, his message resonates today. Not much has changed, and we’re the only ones who can effect change — from outside this system.

6:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Steely Dan

One of the finest bands to ever strap on a couple of guitars, Steely Dan offers a great library of innovative sound. Sit back and enjoy! Walter Becker and Donald Fagan are truly musical geniuses.

8:00 p.m. America’s Three Holy Wars with Howard Zinn

Our first broadcast featuring Howard Zinn. In this nearly hour-long talk, he discusses what he calls America’s three “holy wars.” These are the wars we are not allowed to criticize — The Revolutionary War, The Civil War, and World War II.

“Brunch With the Beatles” Gets a Re-do!

To answer everyone’s first question, YES. Brunch With the Beatles will indeed be back and, when it does come back, it’ll be better than the first time around. We’re considering that initial effort practice…mere child’s play.

New Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers!

For lack of a better name, that’s what we’re offering here. Because, essentially, that’s what you’re getting. These gems have been unearthed by Petty’s family and band mates posthumously and appear on An American Treasure and the new career-spanning compilation, The Best of Everything. They were simply tapes of recorded songs that were, for whatever reason, deemed unworthy of inclusion on several albums. Also included is a version of the song “Stay” with Tom performing with Springsteen and friends at the No Nukes Concert. We’re the winners here!

First Live Album Ever!

Live in Hollywood-Ronstadt

Back in the day, Linda Ronstadt was a road warrior. During the 70s alone, I saw more than 30 “live” Linda Ronstadt performances from the storied Boston Garden (the shittiest acoustics on the planet but a great atmosphere) to the L.A. Forum for the Living in the U.S.A. tour. To this day, I never understood why an album of her live performances was never released. If you’re a music lover, you can always find stuff out there, but most is recorded by her fans.

I saw Ronstadt for the final time at the South Shore Music Circus where she played with Marvin Hamlisch’s band singing classic Nelson Riddle before she brought out her usual road warrior rockers to cap off the evening. It was brilliant. She retired in late 2009, knowing that something was wrong with her singing. She felt as though she was straining and screaming, not singing. Ronstadt was subsequently diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2012, and is no longer able to sing. That’s the crime of the century for me. As Joni Mitchell says, “don’t it always seem to go that you don’t know what you got ’till it’s gone…”

This year brings a wealth of riches for Ronstadt fans. Not only is there a Tribecca Film Festival documentary about her called The Sound of My Voice, but her very first official “live” album — called Live in Hollywood — was released in February. All the performances were chosen by Ronstadt herself, and all were recorded in 1980. The band largely features the players on her Mad Love album — the NY musician set, not the traditional LA musician set — featuring Bob Glaub on bass and the frenetic Danny Korchmar on lead guitar. The term ‘frenetic’ is not meant to be insulting. His guitar work is legendary.

We will be featuring this gem over the weekend. Here is the set list:
