Good Morning, Music Lovers! It’s Sunday in The Mermaid Lounge and that means I don’t have to rush around to get to retail hell. We’ve got a great line-up today, including a multi-artist playlist about water everywhere — in the title, lyrics or both!

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Southern Accents by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers NEW!

Thirty-seven years ago yesterday, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers released their sixth studio album, which was considered a failure at least by the critics (not the fans). According to at least one critic, it was envisioned as a concept album that was “weighted down by its own ambitions.” When one looks at the songs cut from the album, you have to wonder why that decision was made, I must admit. Still, it’s The Heartbreakers, and it’s an album with several great songs, three of which were co-written with Dave Stewart of The Eurythmics, including Don’t Come Around Here No More. But my favorite song on the album remains Rebels.

And then, there’s water…in the title, lyrics, or both. Water, a valuable resource that covers 71% of the planet we live on, is more than worthy of it’s own EP. And we’ve got it here. In spite of her incredibly successful solo career and her position as the Queen of Rock during the 70’s, Linda Ronstadt always preferred singing with others and dreamed of being in a girl group. She finally achieved that when she joined up with Dolly Parton and Emmylou Harris for the Trio albums. Here you’ll hear her sing with J. D. Souther, Randy Newman Ry Cooder, Hoyt Axton, Wendy Waldman, Neil Young, Ann Savoy, Paul Simon, Rosemary Clooney, Aaron Neville, Maria Muldaur and more. And you’ll hear her as lead vocalist, background singer, and harmony singer.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Harvest by Neil Young NEW!

This great piece of genius was Young’s fourth studio album, released in February of 1972. It featured the London Symphony Orchestra on two of the cuts, as well as guest singers Graham Nash, David Crosby, Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor, and Stephen Stills. It resulted in two singles, Old Man and Heart of Gold, which went to number one on Billboard. Linda Ronstadt and James Taylor sang the backgrounds on Heart of Gold, one of my all-time favorite songs on the planet. It was the best-selling album of 1972, and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2015. Need I say more?

4:00 p.m. The Original Sixties Rotation: Various Artists

This is one of the very first playlists we ever put together.
