Today We Hit the Road With ‘Travelin’ Fever’, Then It’s a Carole King ‘Spotlight’ & Badfinger at the BBC, November 7, 2024

Good morning. First, I apologize for no blog entry yesterday; but the music show did go on. Yesterday’s Harris loss hit hard. First of all, I believe that some come along in politics who are special and I believe Kamala Harris is one of them. Many factors led to this point: misogyny being one of them; racism being another. We do not yet have gender equality. We must get there.

This morning, we start out on the road with our ‘Travelin’ Fever’ EP, then it’s Carole King ‘In the Spotlight’ and Badfinger at the BBC from 1972-1973.

Here’s your musical lineup for Thursday:

9:00 a.m. Travelin’ Fever: Various Artists

We start out hitting the road with Canned Heat, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Dan Fogelberg, Bruce Springsteen, Linda Ronstadt, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Paul McCartney & Wings, The Eagles, Little Feat, The Band, Willie Nelson, Edwin Starr, Janis Joplin, Guy Clark, The Byrds, Asleep at The Wheel, Mudcrutch, The Travelin’ Wilburys, Tom Rush and more!

4:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: Carole King

From The Brill Building to Tapestry and beyond, we put one of the greatest singer-songwriters on the planet ‘In The Spotlight’ today!

8:00 p.m. Badfinger Live at The BBC, London, UK, June 8, 1972 and August 10, 1973

We close it out with friends of The Beatles. Badfinger was truly one of the absolute best power pop bands on the planet. We close out the programming with them tonight.

We’re here 24/7 with no commercial interruption and at no charge to our listeners. Sit back and relax with the best music rotation on the planet! The button is below.

Our New ‘Three Part Harmonies’ EP, a CSNY Spotlight, and Live Allman Brothers are On Tap, Friday, October 11, 2024

Good morning, music lovers! We’re on the case today with a brand new EP of songs that use three-part harmonies, some live Allman Brothers Band and a CSNY Spotlight feature.

Here’s your Friday musical lineup:

We’ve got a brand new EP for you this morning of songs that employ three part harmonies. One of the things I noticed putting this together is just how many Beatle songs used it. In addition to The Beatles, you’ll hear Creedence Clearwater Revival, CSNY, The Beach Boys, Talking Heads, Steely Dan, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Yes, The Band, Stevie Nicks, The Doobie Brothers, Queen, Paul McCartney & Wings, The Mamas & The Papas, The Allman Brothers Band, The Grateful Dead, The Who, Boston and more!

4:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young

Speaking of three part harmonies, we have a band here that used it plenty. The second best supergroup (sorry, The Traveling Wilburys are first) on the planet is a back this afternoon.

8:00 p.m. The Allman Brothers Band Live at The Cow Palace, Daly City, CA, December 31, 1973

We haven’t spun this one for a while, so it’s high time we did! This is a great New Year’s Even show from the Brothers.

We’re at the cusp of the weekend and we’re here to get you over the finish line with some great music. We’re on the air 24/7, we’re free and we don’t air commercial advertising. The magic button is below.

At Midweek It’s Travelin’ Fever, a McCartney Spotlight and Live Little Feat On Wednesday, August 7, 2024

Good morning, musicologists! Today we’ve got the midweek peak with our multi-artist ‘Travelin’ Fever’ EP, a Macca Spotlight feature (without his Beatle mates), and some vintage live Little Feat!

Here’s your midweek lineup:

9:00 a.m. Travelin’ Fever: Various Artists

We hit the road today with Canned Heat, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Box Tops, Arlo Guthrie, The Allman Brothers Band, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, The Doors, Tom Rush, The Byrds, Little Feat, The Band, Willie Nelson, Edwin Starr, The Traveling Wilburys, Del Shannon, Janis Joplin and more! (By the way, I’m trying to cut down on the name dropping in these posts.)

4:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Paul McCartney

Today we have Macca without his Beatle mates as we explore his music with Wings and as a solo artist. He’ll be back with The Beatles soon!

8:00 p.m. Little Feat Live at Ebbets Field, Denver, CO, July 20, 1973

Tonight we’ve got a concert from one of the best damned live bands on the planet with the Lowell George version of Little Feat. (Yes, the ONLY version of Little Feat for me.)

We’re on 24/7 at no cost with great programming and our big, wide Open Stream. All you’ve got to do is hit the button below. We’re not kidding. See for yourself.

Happy Birthday to Macca, John Prine Live in New York, and the ‘Color My World’ EP are On Tap for Monday, June 17, 2024

Good morning, McCartney lovers! We will be celebrating Sir Paul’s birthday all this week starting today, then it’s John Prine live at The Other End and our ‘Color My World’ EP gets an evening airing later.

Here’s your Monday musical lineup:

10:00 a.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Paul McCartney

It’s Happy 82nd birthday to Paul McCartney (tomorrow) and we are celebrating throughout the week in a variety of ways, beginning with our Spotlight featuring songs from his days with The Beatles, with Wings and as a solo artist.

The late and great John Prine is certainly most remembered for his magnificent Angel For Montgomery, a composition that became Bonnie Raitt’s signature song. However, John Prine had a way with the twist of a phrase that few others did, often writing about the human condition with a bit of dry sarcasm. Tonight we have him live from what was once and then again, The Bitter End in New York. During this particular time, it was renamed The Other End.

7:00 p.m. Color My World: Various Artists

We close this day out with our five-hour collection of songs about colors in the title, lyrics or both. You’ll hear The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, James Taylor, Donovan, Booker T. and The MGs, Electric Light Orchestra, Procol Harum, Joni Mitchell The Who, Amy Winehouse, Sam & Dave, Badfinger, Bob Dylan, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, Elvis Costello, Neil Young, Jefferson Airplane, The Hollies, Elvis Presley, Janis Joplin, Cream, Marvin Gaye, Lucinda Williams, John Hiatt, J.D. Souther, Linda Ronstadt and more!

Today It’s Laura Nyro With Our AOW and Some Folks Who Want to Sing to You About Travelin’ Fever, Sunday, October 1, 2023

Good morning, weekenders! We’re here on another keep-it-simple Sunday with Laura Nyro’s New York Tendaberry and our ‘Travelin’ Fever’ EP!

Here’s your Sunday Funday lineup:

In her third studio album, Nyro sings about the romantic experience and past lovers in a darker tone than on Eli & The Thirteenth Confession (which has already been on our AOW roster), but New York Tendaberry would prove to be the most commercially successful album of her career. As we have said in previous write-ups about Laura Nyro, she spent most of her career making others successful with her great compositions, but there is nothing like hearing Laura singer her own stuff.

3:00 p.m. Travelin’ Fever: Various Artists

Life on the road has to be one of the most popular subjects in rock n’ roll (perhaps second only to the broken heart). You’ll hear from Canned Heat, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Steve Miller Band, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Dan Fogelberg, Bruce Springsteen, Linda Ronstadt, Led Zeppelin, Paul McCartney & Wings, The Doors, The Eagles, Little Feat, The Band, Willie Nelson, Edwin Starr, Janis Joplin, Guy Clark, The Byrds, Joan Baez, Asleep at The Wheel, The Traveling Wilburys, Mudcrutch, Loggins & Messina, Buffalo Springfield, Tom Rush, Willie Nelson, The Guess Who, Ray Charles, Marshall Tucker Band, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, Del Shannon, and more!

It’s Crazy in The Lounge Today! We Say Farewell to Our AOW and Jagger/Richards, and Welcome the Ladies of Music and Garcia/Hunter, Saturday, September 16, 2023

Good morning, weekenders! It’s an unusually busy day here on a Saturday because we dedicated Friday to The Beatles, our big-ass House Band. We’ve got some cramming to do today!

Here’s your musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Red Rose Speedway by Paul McCartney & Wings FINAL AIRING!

We bid a fond farewell to this week’s album. Tomorrow, we’ll have a brand new selection for you.

11:00 a.m. Ladies Day Out: Various Artists

We’ll have an update coming soon but, in the meantime, you can hear Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Carly Simon, Emmylou Harris, Petula Clark, Laura Nyro, Cilla Black, Irma Thomas, Aretha Franklin, Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Etta James, Janis Joplin, Carole King, Maria Muldaur, Lucinda Williams, Rosanne Cash, Eva Cassidy, Wendy Waldman, Shawn Colvin, The Ronettes, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Norah Jones, Phoebe Snow, Nicolette Larson, Sheryl Crowe, Susan Tedeschi, Valerie Carter, Dusty Springfield, Dolly Parton and more!

6:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Mick Jagger & Keith Richards FINAL AIRING!

We say our goodbyes to this week’s featured singer-songwriting duo of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards.

And we ring in our featured singer-songwriters for the coming week! While it’s true that Robert Hunter didn’t “sing” we like to bend the rules here. They started out as a folk duo during the sixties and wound up writing some classic Grateful Dead tunes, like Dark Star, Shakedown Street, Casey Jones, Fire On The Mountain and many others.

We’re Weekend Bound With the ‘A Little Bit O’ Soul’ EP, Our AOW and an Ann Peebles Spotlight on Thursday, September 14, 2023

We’re on the downslide to the weekend with our big, bad soul and R & B extended playlist, our AOW from McCartney & Wings and Ann Peebles In the Spotlight this evening.

Here’s today’s musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. A Little Bit O’ Soul: Various Artists

We collect all the great artists from Motown, Muscle Shoals, Soulsville U.S.A. and beyond for this one with Aretha Franklin, The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Ronettes, Marvin Gaye, Ray Charles, Otis Redding, Jimmy Ruffin, The Drifters, Chuck Berry, Stevie Wonder, Carla Thomas, James Brown, The Shirelles, Etta James, Curtis Mayfield, Sam & Dave, The Staple Singers, Nina Simone, LaVern Baker, The Supremes, Sam Cooke, Edwin Starr, Fontella Bass, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Irma Thomas, The Box Tops, Jr. Walker & The All Stars, Eddie Floyd, Percy Sledge, Wanda Jackson, The Ad Libs, Joe Tex, Ann Peebles, Al Green and more.

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Red Rose Speedway by Paul McCartney & Wings

We’re winding down on this gem. The final airing will be sometime on Saturday, so get in on this while you can!

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Ann Peebles

With all the great souls stars out there, sometimes Ann Peebles gets lost in the crowd, but that should never be the case. A fine soul singer, she is best known for her Memphis R & B albums of the seventies. Tune her in.

We’ve got soul on both ends of the programming day here today, with a little bit of McCartney genius in between. A fine day to be in The Mermaid Lounge with the rest of us. Be there or be square, as they used to say.

Tuesday Bluesday Brings ‘The Best of Chicago Blues’ EP, Koko Taylor In the Spotlight, and Our AOW, September 12, 2023

Good morning, bluesologists! We are back with another Tuesday Bluesday and we’ve got our ‘Best of Chicago Blues’ EP kicking things off this morning.

Here’s your Tuesday Bluesday lineup:

9:00 a.m. The Best of Chicago Blues: Various Artists

Today we kick it off with the masters of the Chicago blues scene like Otis Rush, Willie Dixon, Albert King, Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Bo Diddley, Koko Taylor, Lowell Fulson, Howlin’ Wolf, Buddy Guy, Magic Slim, Sonny Boy Williamson, Son Seals, James Cotton, Paul Butterfield, Elmore James, Jimmy Reed, Otis Spann and more!

4:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Red Rose Speedway by Paul McCartney & Wings

Coming in for a second spin this week, we give you the reissued version with all the bonus tracks. The critics didn’t like it much, but the fans put it at No. 1 on the Billboard album chart and My Love at number one on the Hot 100. This only bolsters my belief that music critics are an acquired taste.

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Koko Taylor

The Queen of Chicago Blues herself steps into the spotlight to close out our Tuesday Bluesday programming this evening.

It’s Tuesday Bluesday in The Mermaid Lounge and that’s our busiest day. Drop by. There’s plenty of room for everyone, and it won’t cost you a cent to listen in. We’re on 24/7 and we’re totally free. Best of all, there are no commercial interruptions.

Living is Easy With “Red Rose Speedway” as Our AOW and the ‘Here Comes The Night’ EP on Sunday, September 10, 2023

Good morning, weekenders! We are fully entrenched in the weekend music scene as we give you Red Rose Speedway as our AOW and lean into our ‘Here Comes The Night’ EP later!

Here’s your Sunday Funday lineup:

This album perfectly signifies why I do not pay one iota of attention to music critics. Their opinions of albums — and all they are is opinions — is based on their personal experiences. Therefore, it’s up to me to evaluate albums for myself. And that’s what I do. Do I think every album we have chosen on this five-year journey has been a show-stopping tour de force? No. But that’s also not my criteria for choosing them. So, there. With Red Rose Speedway, we are giving you the bonus tracks that came from the re-release also.

3:00 p.m. Here Comes The Night: Various Artists

We’ve got our Here Comes The Night EP starting up this afternoon and taking you into the evening with Warren Zevon, the J. Geils Band, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Beatles, Them, Van Morrison, Patti Smith, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bruce Springsteen, The Kinks, Electric Prunes, Phoebe Snow, Joe Walsh, The Eagles, The Ronettes, John Cougar Mellencamp, The Doors, Emmylou Harris, Poco, Neil Diamond, The Animals, The Band, The Rolling Stones, Don McLean, Steve Winwood, Cat Stevens, the Traveling Wilburys, Sam Cooke, Jimmy Cliff, Bonnie Raitt and more!

Sunday is the official day of rest for the #BecomeUngovernable Radio Team. It should be for you too, so kick back, dump the shoes and pour yourself a drink. Tune us in for the best music around at no charge and with no commercial advertising.

Let’s Keep It Simple: We’ve Got ‘Pet Sounds’ as Our AOW and We Hit The Road With Our ‘Travelin’ Fever’ EP, Sunday, August 27, 2023

Good morning, serious weekenders! This is our keep-it-simple day today and the living couldn’t be any easier here in The Mermaid Lounge. Read on for details!

Here is your musical road ahead:

This is The Beach Boys eleventh studio release, although it was pretty much a Brian Wilson tour-de-force solo project of major proportions. He composed the majority of this by himself, spurred on by a mystical revelation (there was a lot of that going around those days) and by the work of The Beatles. It is certainly considered one of the greatest and most influential albums in popular music history.

3:00 p.m. Travelin’ Fever: Various Artists

We’re back on the move again with our road warriors, including Canned Heat, Tom Petty & The Hearbreakers, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Steve Miller Band, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Dan Fogelberg, Bruce Springsteen, Linda Ronstadt, Led Zeppelin, Paul McCartney & Wings, The Doors, The Eagles, Little Feat, The Band, Willie Nelson, Edwin Starr, Guy Clark, The Byrds, Joan Baez, Asleep at The Wheel, The Traveling Wilburys, Mudcrutch, Loggins & Messina, Buffalo Springfield, Tom Rush, The Guess Who, The Beatles, Ray Charles, The Marshall Tucker Band, Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, Del Shannon and more!
