We open with a band in the forefront of the country-rock genre; this version with both Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman.

Midweek Brings ‘Here Comes The Night,’ a New Patty Griffin Spotlight and Ringo’s Best Drumming, Wednesday, May 22, 2024

Good morning, musicologists! We’re in a heat wave here this week, both outside and inside The Lounge! We start the morning off with songs about the night!

Here’s your midweek musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. Here Comes The Night: Various Artists

Songs about night in the morning brings the music of Warren Zevon, J. Geils Band, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Them, The Beatles, Van Morrison, Patti Smith, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bruce Springsteen, The Kinks, Electric Prunes, Phoebe Snow, Joe Walsh, The Eagles, The Ronettes, John Cougar Mellencamp, The Doors, Poco, Emmylou Harris, Neil Diamond, The Animals, The Rolling Stones, Don McLean, Steve Winwood and more!

Patty Griffin is a quite accomplished singer, songwriter and musician whose music has been recorded by many musical artists over the years, yet fame has eluded her. She is not alone, but she has found a home here in The Mermaid Lounge and her music has also been added to our standard rotation.

8:00 p.m. The Beatles: Ringo’s Best Drumming Performances

Ringo Starr isn’t just a drummer, he’s actually a percussionist. While some have brushed off his drumming talents, we suggest that these critics are obsessed with drum solos that break up the mood of the song. That’s not Ringo. And his peers, like Dave Grohl, Stuart Copeland and Tre Cool know how inspirational his style has been over the years. In short, just as McCartney doesn’t play the bass like everyone else, Ringo has his own drumming style, sound and approach, and it has greatly enriched the Beatles music by giving every song just what it needs. Tonight we have his best performances.

It’s a Wilbury Wednesday Today, But We Kick It Off With Our ‘Here Comes The Night’ Multi-Artist EP, March 20, 2024

We finally have a Wilbury Wednesday on tap with a great playlist, but we are kicking things off with our ‘Here Comes The Night’ multi-artist EP first!

Here’s your midweek musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. Here Comes The Night: Various Artists

We closed the show with songs about the morning the other day, so it’s only fitting we open today with songs about the night time. You’ll hear Warren Zevon, The J. Geils Band, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Them, The Beatles, Van Morrison, Patti Smith, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Electric Prunes, Phoebe Snow, Joe Walsh, The Eagles, The Beatles, John Cougar Mellencamp, The Doors, Poco, Emmylou Harris, Neil Diamond, The Animals, The Rolling Stones, Don McLean, Steve Winwood, The Traveling Wilburys, Sam Cooke, Jimmy Cliff and Bonnie Raitt.

7:00 p.m. The Traveling Wilburys: The Bootleg Collection

The best supergroup on the planet, bar none, is back with outtakes, alternative takes, works-in-progress and the final product in nearly three hours of great music. Not to be missed.

Sunday Brings The Rolling Stones’ AOW, Our EP About The Night, and The Mamas & The Papas, February 18, 2024

Good morning on this not-quite-as-simple Sunday as we offer three bits of programming for the first time on a Sunday! The shape of things to come? Well, we have a lot of music.

Here’s your Sunday Funday lineup:

Another on our list of albums turning 50 years old this year, it’s the 12th studio album by the Rolling Stones and their final with Mick Taylor as guitarist. He would soon be replaced by Ron Wood. The album combines traditional blues and rock and roll sound with elements of funk and reggae. It went to number one in the U.S. and number two in the UK.

2:00 p.m. Here Comes The Night: Various Artists

We’re back with songs about the night in the title, lyrics or both with Warren Zevon, The J. Geils Band, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Them, The Beatles, Patti Smith, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bruce Springsteen, The Kinks, Electric Prunes, Phoebe Snow, Joe Walsh, The Eagles, The Ronettes, John Cougar Mellencamp, The Doors, Poco, Emmylou Harris, Neil Diamond, The Animals, The Rolling Stones, Don McLean, Steve Winwood, The Traveling Wilburys, Sam Cooke, Jimmy Cliff, Bonnie Raitt and more!

8:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Mamas & The Papas

We’ve been remiss and have allowed too much time to lapse before spinning this one. In spite of the fact that this band only recorded together from 1965 through 1968, they were a defining force in the music of the sixties and a mainstay of the Laurel Canyon scene. They made some of the best music of their generation.
