We Keep It Simple on Sunday With Our Surprising New Album of The Week and ‘Here Comes The Night’ EP, March 5, 2023

Good morning, musicologists! We love it when musicians refuse to be “defined” and Dr. John is one of those guys. Today we have a brand new album featuring Dr. John and two of his friends, along with our ‘Here Comes The Night’ EP.

Here’s your laid-back Sunday lineup:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Bluesiana Triangle by Art Blakey, Dr. John and David “Fathead” Newman NEW!

I stumbled upon this album several years ago because of my obsession with Dr. John, but it’s conception was really Art Blakey, an American jazz drummer. In addition to Dr. John on piano, guitar and vocals, it features David “Fathead” Newman, a jazz and rhythm & blues saxophonist, who is best known for his work with Ray Charles in the 50’s and early 60’s. The album is a collection of great jazz, blues and funk music that has become one of my favorites.

3:00 p.m. Here Comes The Night: Various Artists

We’re back with our EP about night time (it’s the right time, according to the J. Geils Band). In addition to them, you’ll hear Warren Zevon, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Them, The Beatles, Van Morrison, Patti Smith, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bruce Springsteen, The Kinks, The Electric Prunes, Phoebe Snow, Joe Walsh, The Eagles, The Ronettes, John Cougar Mellencamp, Linda Ronstadt, Joni Mitchell, Emmylou Harris, The Doors, Poco, Neil Diamond, The Animals, The Band, The Rolling Stones, The Traveling Wilburys, Sam Cooke, Jimmy Cliff, Bonnie Raitt, Don McLean, Steve Winwood, Cat Stevens and more!

Yes, it’s an official day of rest, so kick back and tune us in. Even if you’ve got stuff to do around the house, we make great background music because we run absolutely NO commercial advertising at any time. We also don’t spend a hell of a lot of time talking. We’re all about the music and we’re totally free.

The #BecomeUngovernable House EP starts at 3:00 p.m. today!

Here’s your Sunday musical landscape:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus by Spirit NEW!

Spirit was one of those bands that hung around in your head poking you with a stick until you realized just how good they were. I’m not much for reinventing the wheel just so I can say I wrote it, so I’m giving you a great description of the album from a great website called uDiscoverMusic:

Released in November 1970, this was the original psychedelic era’s final masterpiece. Lyrically, Twelve Dreams Of Dr Sardonicus wraps up everything that era was trying to say. Songs like “Nature’s Way” and “Nothing To Hide” thumb their noses at the straight world; “Love Has Found A Way” and “Life Has Just Begun” illustrate how much is possible if your mind is ready for it. Musically, it’s endlessly inventive, bringing the band’s jazz, pop and heavy rock factions onto the same astral plane. And though it crystallises a moment in time, it doesn’t sound the least bit dated.
Must hear: Life Has Just Begun

3:00 p.m. The #BecomeUngovernable House Music EP: Various Artists

A great eclectic collection of musical artists and songs in this one; all he music that made me want to start this shit to begin with. Most of it has a message that still resonates today. You will hear Barry McGuire, The Temptations, Edwin Starr, Peter Tosh, The Beatles, Genesis, T-Rex, The Who, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bob Dylan, Country Joe & The Fish, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Bob Marley & The Wailers, Joan Baez, CSNY, Pink Floyd, The Animals, Ten Years After, The Plastic Ono Band, George Harrison, Sam Cooke, The Rolling Stones, Joni Mitchell, Jimi Hendrix, Three Dog Night, Jimmy Cliff, Richie Havens, Marvin Gaye, The Association, Phil Ochs, Tom Rush, Pete Seeger, The Band, Nina Simone and more!

Before, in between, and after we’ve got that great wide Open Stream with The Music Mermaid calling the shots. The music never stops here; she’s always on duty. As you know, she has impeccable taste in music. Give us a shot, folks. We’re on 24/7 at no charge to you.

We Made It! Friday is Here and So is Our ‘House’ EP and Some ‘Live’ Flying Burrito Brothers Later, September 23, 2022

Good Morning, Musicologists! It’s the end of another work week (for most of us; I’ve got one day left) and we’ve got a great day of programming lined up. As always, we are modest in structure. Most of our day is dedicated to that great wide Open Stream.

We kick the day off with our #BecomeUngovernable House EP!

Here’s your end-of-the-week lineup:

11:00 a.m. The #BecomeUngovernable House Playlist: Various Artists

Totally inspirational music here for you, folks. The music that inspired the station. Plenty of protest music and plenty of psychedelia. You’ll hear plenty of The Mermaid Lounge favorites with Barry McGuire, The Temptations, Edwin Starr, Peter Tosh, The Who, The Beatles, Genesis, T-Rex, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Country Joe & The Fish, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Bob Marley & The Wailers, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, CSNY, Pink Floyd, The Animals, Ten Years After, The Plastic Ono Band, Billy Joel, George Harrison, The Rolling Stones, Sam Cooke, Joni Mitchell, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Three Dog Night, Jimmy Cliff, Richie Havens, Marvin Gaye, The Association, Phil Ochs, Tom Rush, Pete Seeger, The Band, Nina Simone and more!

7:00 p.m. The Flying Burrito Brothers Live at The Palomino, West Hollywood, CA, June 8, 1969

One of the bands at the forefront of the country-rock phenomenon that took root in Laurel Canyon, the breeding ground for two generations of musicians who helped meld country and rock. Tonight we have them live from The Palomino.

This is the place to be today. There is a lot of great music in both the programming and the open stream, and you’ll be under the mesmerizing control of The Music Mermaid. That is significantly better than being under the control of Donald Trump. I think we can all agree on that. We’re totally free. We take no commercial advertising, so there’s no interruption (except for a few modest station I.D.’s from me), and no ‘subscription’ required. Therefore, you need not provide a credit card nor personal information. What more do you want?

It’s One of Those Saturdays With Our AOW, The ‘A Little Bit O’ Soul’ EP, Some ‘Live’ Magnolia Sisters, and LIVE DEAD! September 10, 2022

Good Morning! There is no shortage of great music lined up today, including a visit from the Magnolia Sisters, an all-female Cajun band featuring Ann Savoy.

The Magnolia Sisters pay us a visit today here in The Mermaid Lounge!

Here’s your musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. Album of The Week: First Take by Roberta Flack FINAL AIRING!

We start a bit early today with the final airing of our Album of The Week, First Take by Roberta Flack. This album is viewed as one of the greatest R & B albums of all time, so get on board while you can. Tomorrow we’ll have a new selection!

11:00 a.m. A Little Bit O’ Soul: Various Artists

One of our favorite EP’s here in The Lounge. This is an all-encompassing tribute to soul and R & B that includes more than just Motown. You’ll hear Aretha Franklin, The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Ronettes, Marvin Gaye, Ray Charles, Otis Redding, Jimmy Ruffin, The Drifters, Chuck Berry, Stevie Wonder, Carla Thomas, James Brown, The Shirelles, Etta James, Curtis Mayfield, Sam & Dave, The Staple Singers, Nina Simone, LaVern Baker, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Sam Cooke, Edwin Starr, Fontella Bass, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Irma Thomas and more!

7:00 p.m. The Magnolia Sisters Live at The Simi Valley Cajun & Blues Festival, Simi Valley, CA, May 23, 2015

This is one sweet band, led by Ann Savoy who teamed up with Linda Ronstadt as the ZoZo Sisters for the great album, Adieu False Heart. The Savoys have a long history of traditional Cajun music and it shows. This is a totally captivating musical genre, and these women have it down cold. We are currently on the hunt for more of their stuff and will be adding it to our rotation very soon.

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at The Zoo Amphitheater, Oklahoma City, OK, September 2, 1985

We have another repeat performance here, but we haven’t aired this one since 2020, so it’ll be like brand new. Would it matter? If you’re a true Deadhead, you’re open to listening over and over and over and over…

Well, Weekenders, here we are again kicking off a two-day reprieve from the teeming masses of consuming humanity (all except for me; I’ve got one more day to go). What better way to go? Today, it’ll be musical mutiny in the workplace after the boss leaves. We’ll be flipping on #BecomeUngovernable Radio. After all, the only things I need are a computer, a free tab and a mouse. We’re on.
