Monday Brings ‘Under The Sun & Moon,’ a Jimmy Webb ‘Spotlight’ and Ringo’s Best Drum Performances, March 31, 2025

Good morning, music lovers. We’re back to the work week, and we’ve got great music on tap starting with our ‘Under The Sun & Moon’ playlist, then it’s a different kind of ‘Spotlight’ feature and some of Ringo’s most masterful drumming.

Here’s your Monday, Monday musical lineup:

10:00 a.m. Under The Sun & Moon: Various Artists

Not an EP, but that doesn’t mean it can’t get there. So far, we’ve got music from The Beatles, Cat Stevens, Linda Ronstadt, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Little Feat, Donovan, Neil Young, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, America, The Animals, Gordon Lightfoot, Maria Muldaur, The Wallflowers, Valerie Carter, The Kinks, Shawn Colvin, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Laura Nyro, Cream and more!

When you talk about musical geniuses, there is no leaving this guy out of the conversation. He is one of the most prolific songwriters of his generation and a fountain of music for so many singers. However, the two most notable beneficiaries of his songwriting genius are Linda Ronstadt and Glen Campbell and, in turn, they have done his songs justice. This is a different kind of playlist, and we’re sure you’re going to enjoy it.

8:00 p.m. The Beatles: Ringo Starr’s Drumming Genius

What can you say about Ringo Starr? Plenty. The man has recorded over 40 albums since The Beatles broke up, including his latest, Look Up, a country album in collaboration with the great T-Bone Burnett. (We’ll be featuring that release soon, by the way.) But Ringo’s favorite thing to do remains the same as always: Playing the drums. And he’s not just any drummer. Just ask his peers. (This is an excellent video.) Tonight we have what we think are his best drum efforts with The Fab Four.

We’re on 24/7 without any commercial interruption playing, without a doubt, the most eclectic music collection anywhere on the web or the airwaves. We do not simply give women a venue in passing; we feature more women’s music than any other station. See for yourselves. The button is below.

On Saturday It’s ‘Ladies Day Out’, A Booker T & The MGs ‘Spotlight’, and Live Kris Kristofferson at the Moody, March 29, 2025

Good morning, musicologists, and we continue celebrating Women’s Month with our ‘Ladies Day Out’ EP, then it’s a great ‘Spotlight’ featuring Booker T & The MGs, and Kris Kristofferson live at Austin City Limits.

Here’s your Saturday musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. Ladies Day Out: Various Artists

The women of music are large and in charge for five hours. We’re featuring songs from Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Carly Simon, Emmylou Harris, Petula Clark, Laura Nyro, Cilla Black, Irma Thomas, Aretha Franklin, Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Etta James, Janis Joplin, Carole King, Maria Muldaur, Lucinda Williams, Rosanne Cash, Eva Cassidy, Wendy Waldman, Shawn Colvin, The Ronettes, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Norah Jones, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Phoebe Snow, Susan Tedeschi, Nicolette Larson, Sheryl Crown, Valerie Carter, Dolly Parton, Dusty Springfield, Ann Peebles and more!

4:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Booker T & The MGs

The original Stax house band broke out to become one of the most influential instrumental R & B and funk bands in music. They helped to establish the Souther and Memphis soul genres. Today we put them ‘In The Spotlight’.

8:00 p.m. Kris Kristofferson Live at The Moody Theater, Austin, TX, September 14, 1981

We close out the programming with the late, great Kris Kristofferson recorded live at The Moody Theater for Austin City Limits.

We’ve made it to another weekend. The Orange Shitstain usually golfs, so things seem to quiet down so that we can rejuvenate ourselves before the next onslaught. This is a great place to be. Join us. The button is below.

Monday Delivers Some Unsavory Characters, Then It’s Bill Withers and Live Jethro Tull On March 3, 2025

Good morning, weekly workers. We’ve got some great music lined up to ease you back into the work week, starting with ‘Villains, Scumbags & Lowlives” (and no, it’s not the GOP).

Here’s Monday’s musical lineup:

10:00 a.m. Villains, Scumbags and Lowlives: Various Artists

We start out with some shady characters courtesy of Leslie Gore, Queen, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Jim Croce, Neil Young, The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, Shawn Colvin, Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton, Bob Dylan, Foo Fighters, The Eagles, Warren Zevon, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Who, Supertramp, Foreigner and more!

4:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Bill Withers

Bill Withers musical career spanned just 18 years, but he packed a lot of punch into those years having a string of great hits, winning three Grammys and scoring nominations for six others. Today he’s in our ‘Spotlight’.

8:00 p.m. Jethro Tull Live at The Capitol Centre, Landover, MD, November 21, 1977

We close with Jethro Tull on the ‘Songs From The Wood’ tour. I saw this show at the old Boston Garden. This performance is from The Capitol Centre in Maryland.

Is there a better way to start out the work week? We think not, my friends. We’re totally free. We’re on 24/7. We also do not run commercial advertising or ask for your personal information. Elon Musk is not granted access to our offices either. You’re safe here. The button is below.

On Friday It’s ‘Repeat After Me’, An All-Star Cast in Concert, and a Randy Newman ‘Spotlight’, February 7, 2025

Good morning, musicologists. I make my 71st trip around the sun today and I chose stuff I wanted to hear. I confess. However, I’m sure you’ll like it too!

Here’s your Friday lineup:

10:00 a.m. Repeat After Me: Volume One

They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. So, Linda Ronstadt covers Martha & The Vandellas; The Heartbreakers cover J.J. Cale; Joan Baez covers The Band; Three Dog Night covers Laura Nyro; Emmylou Harris covers The Beatles; and The Beatles cover Barrett Strong. You get the picture. This is one of my favorite playlists. So is Volume Two which will air tomorrow and, hopefully, an new Volume Three which I hope to have ready for Sunday or Monday. Enjoy.

3:00 p.m. Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Shawn Colvin, Bruce Hornsby, and David Lindley Live at Red Rocks Amphitheater, Morrison, CO, September 12, 1999

I had the absolute pleasure of attending this show when it came through Great Woods back in the day. It was a beautiful night in the open air with an all-star cast that did not disappoint. See for yourselves.

8:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Randy Newman

A class act singer-songwriter with a wry sense of humor. Randy Newman is an American institution who has put many a singer on the map. Tonight we hear him sing his own songs.

Once again, we’re here 24/7 at no cost to you. None. No lie. We also refuse to run commercial advertising or to employ overly chatty DJs. We’re all about the music. Check it all out. The button is below.

We Intro The Liverbirds, Then It’s ‘Ladies Day Out’ and a Judy Collins ‘Spotlight’ on Sunday, December 29, 2024

Good morning, music historians. We’re sure you’ve never heard about The Liverbirds, a band referred to as ‘the all-girl Beatles’ who came from Liverpool and graced the music scene from 1963 to 1968. We’ve got them today, as well as all-girl programming!

Here’s your all-girl lineup:

Was there an all-girl band before the Liverbirds from, where else, Liverpool, England? We’re not sure. They were on the music scene from 1963 through 1968 and are referred to as ‘the all-girl Beatles’. We have a link from Wikipedia in the opening paragraph of this blog entry, but here’s some additional information on this band.

12:00 p.m. Ladies Day Out: Various Artists

Nobody plays female artists like we do, and this is a great playlist including Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Carly Simon, Emmylou Harris, Petula Clark, Laura Nyro, Cilla Black, Irma Thomas, Aretha Franklin, Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Etta James, Janis Joplin, Carole King, Maria Muldaur, Lucinda Williams, Rosanne Cash, Eva Cassidy, Wendy Waldman, Shawn Colvin, The Ronettes, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Norah Jones, Phoebe Snow, Nicolette Larson, Susan Tedeschi, Valerie Carter, Dusty Springfield, Ann Peebles and more!

8:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Judy Collins

We close out the programming with a woman whose career has spanned seven decades, releasing 36 albums and six live albums.

We love days when all of the programming centers around women. We play more women in a week than most stations play in a month. We’re on 24/7 with no commercial advertising. We’re all about the music. The button is below.

On Monday We Return To Summer, Then It’s Yusuf/Cat Stevens Live in Virginia and Jesse Winchester, December 9, 2024

As winter settles in here (at least in New England) we take a trip back to summer with our multi-artist playlist, then we have some live Yusuf/Cat Stevens and a Jesse Winchester ‘Spotlight’ feature.

Here’s your Monday, Monday lineup:

10:00 a.m. Summertime: Various Artists

As the temperatures drop, we return to a warmer season with Paul McCartney, Electric Light Orchestra, Eddie Cochran, Donovan, The Wallflowers, Van Morrison, Shawn Colvin, John Prine, k.d. lang, The Stone Poneys, Bob Dylan, Nanci Griffith, The Beach Boys, Dusty Springfield and more!

4:00 p.m. Yusuf/Cat Stevens Live at William & Mary Hall, Williamsburg, VA, February 22, 1976

We’ve got The Cat live from William & Mary College in Virginia this afternoon, recorded while on his Majikat (Earth Tour 1976).

8:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Jesse Winchester

I’ve seen Jesse Winchester live several times, the first being when he opened for Emmylou Harris at Boston’s famous Music Hall, which is now known as the MGM Music Hall at Fenway. Capitalism takes the charm out of everything.

There’s plenty of wide Open Stream on Mondays in between our regular programming. We’re here 24/7 and we’re totally free all the time. No bait and switch. See for yourselves. The Button is below.

Spend Monday With Live Stephen Stills, a Steve Winwood Mashup, and a Shawn Colvin ‘Spotlight’, November 4, 2024

Good morning, music lovers and welcome back to the work week. We’re here in The Mermaid Lounge to help get you through with some great music!

Here’s your Monday, Monday lineup:

10:00 a.m. Stephen Stills Live at Shepherd’s Bush Empire, London, UK, October 20, 2008

We open the day’s programming with Stephen Stills in a live performance from Shepherd’s Bush.

4:00 p.m. Traffic, Blind Faith, Spencer Davis Group Super-Jam

Haven’t aired this one for a bit. What do all three bands have in common? The legendary Steve Winwood, of course!

8:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Shawn Colvin

Shawn Colvin may well have her feet firmly planted in folk, but she’s got the knack for crossing over into the blues, country and good old rock n’ roll.

Before, in between and after the programming, we’ve got our big, wide Open Stream of over 27,000 songs brought to you uninterrupted by chatty DJs and commercial advertising. The button is below.

The Weekend Begins With ‘What’s In a Name’, Then It’s Maria Muldaur and Townes Van Zandt on Saturday, August 17, 2024

Good morning, musicologists and name droppers! We’ve got a great day of music in store starting with our ‘What’s In a Name’ multi-artist EP!

Here’s your Saturday lineup:

9:00 a.m. What’s In A Name: Various Artists

Have we got name droppers for you today! Some of the folks they sing about are real. Some are not. Do you know the difference? You’ll hear Stevie Wonder, The Beatles, Them, Janis Joplin, Simon & Garfunkel, The Beach Boys, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Jimi Hendrix, Donovan, Steve Winwood, Bonnie Raitt, Shawn Colvin, Carly Simon, Warren Zevon, Laura Nyro, Bobbie Gentry, The Kinks, Three Dog Night, The Association, Joni Mitchell, Badfinger, Linda Ronstadt, Steely Dan, Chi Coltrane, Bob Dylan, Rod Stewart, James Taylor, Tony Joe White and more!

4:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Maria Muldaur

Maria Muldaur’s career began during the great sixties folk music revival, but she didn’t stop there as her musical style encompasses folk, blues, early jazz, gospel, country and R&B. Give a listen.

We close with a brand new live show from one of the greatest singer-songwriters of all time without question.

We Close Out The Month With Wendy Waldman, The ‘Ladies Day Out’ EP, and Live Carole King, June 30, 2024

Good morning, musicologists. When we say nobody plays the women of music like we do, we mean it. And we back it up. It’s a Ladies Only kind of day here in The Mermaid Lounge.

Here’s your Sunday Funday lineup:

10:00 a.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Wendy Waldman

I dare say some may not know who Wendy Waldman is, but those who were enmeshed in the women of music during the seventies will. She was one of those women during an era where women banded together over music in the face of a totally male-dominated environment, and helped each other out by appearing on each other’s albums. It was certainly a great time in music. There was minimal competition among the women, and a whole lot of camaraderie. Wendy Waldman may not have been a ‘star’ in that sky, but she made some amazing albums and has a great voice, and her peers knew it. Tune her in.

1:00 p.m. Ladies Day Out: Various Artists

We close the month with one of our favorite EP’s featuring Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Carly Simon, Emmylou Harris, Petula Clark, Laura Nyro, Cilla Black, Irma Thomas, Aretha Franklin, Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Etta James, Janis Joplin, Carole King, Maria Muldaur, Lucinda Williams, Rosanne Cash, Eva Cassidy, Wendy Waldman, Shawn Colvin, The Ronettes, The Supremes, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Norah Jones, Phoebe Snow, Nicolette Larson, Sheryl Crow, Susan Tedeschi, Valerie Carter, Dusty Springfield, Dolly Parton and more!

Billed as the ‘Home Again’ show, it was all that. Carole King is a legend in the annals of women’s music, starting out as a songwriter in the famous Brill Building. She then went on to build an amazing solo career highlighted by the release of Tapestry, a legendary album. We have her live from Central Park tonight.

‘Ode To Morning,’ an Allman Brothers Spotlight, and a Band Too Big To Fail Are All On Tap, Sunday, April 21, 2024

Good morning musicologists and welcome to The Mermaid Lounge where music is Queen. We have a great lineup on tap, so read on for details.

Here’s your Sunday Funday lineup:

9:00 a.m. Ode To Morning: Various Artists

Fittingly, we begin the morning with songs about the morning. You’ll hear Yusuf/Cat Stevens, Hoyt Axton, The Beatles, Neil Young, The Rascals, Waylon Jennings, Joan Baez, James Taylor, Gram Parsons, Simon & Garfunkel, Taj Mahal, Dan Fogelberg, Linda Ronstadt, Harry Chapin, Three Dog Night, Ry Cooder, Tim Buckley, Muddy Waters, Jonathan Edwards, Bob Dylan, Townes Van Zandt and more!

4:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of The Allman Brothers Band

This afternoon we put the spotlight on the band that introduced and anchored the Southern Rock sound, started in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1969 by brothers Duane and Greg Allman. Another founding member was Dicky Betts, one of the finest guitarists on the planet, who left this planet just a few days ago. This one’s for him.

8:00 p.m. Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Shawn Colvin, Bruce Hornsby, David Lindley & Wally Ingram Live at Red Rocks Amphitheater, Morrison, CO, September 12, 1999

This is the band that was too big to fail. I was lucky enough to see this tour at what was then called The Tweeter Center in Mansfield, MA, under the stars. It was fantastic.

We’re in a hurry here. We begin at nine, so no time to banter. Yes, I overslept. Enjoy the musical journey!
