Good morning, musicologists. What were you listening to on the radio during the Summer of Love? We begin our farewell to summertime today with just such a playlist culled from radio stations across the country.

We kick off the day with our ‘Summer of Love Countdown’ playlist. Contrary to popular (and misinformed) opinion, this was during the summer of 1967, not 1969, my friends. 4:00 p.m. Creedence Clearwater Revival Live at The Fillmore West, San Francisco, CA, July 4, 1971

We tune in this afternoon to four guys from Berkeley, CA who sounded like they came straight out of the Louisiana bayou. CCR was a spectacular band whose music has stood the test of time.

8:00 p.m. Carly Simon Live at Grand Central Station, New York, NY, April 2, 1995

This impromptu performance was the idea of Jackie Kennedy Onassis to commemorate their friendship and to address Simon’s stage fright problem. April 2, 1995, was her first live performance in 14 years, where she and her band performed songs for unsuspecting commuters in the main terminal.

We close out the evening with a couple of hours of Ringo stuff with the Beatles, with his All Starr Bands (some of the greatest musicians on the planet line up to be part of his road bands), and as a soloist. It has been updated to include new music from his number one country album, Look Up.

We’re on the cusp of July 4 and, I daresay, celebrating this holiday in these times would be an affront to America. We are no longer independent. We are under the dictatorship of a petty and evil man who should never have occupied the White House. So, on July 4, this radio station will play our newest EP, ‘We Dissent’ for starters. Formed in L.A. in 1964, The Byrds remain a musical stalwart today. Their lineup has changed over the years, with Roger McGuinn being the only consistent member, In spite of that, they made their mark with McGuinn’s jangly 12-string Rickenbacker guitar and their signature harmony vocals, influencing many subsequent acts including Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. Today they are In The Spotlight.

8:00 p.m. Van Morrison Live at The Capitol Theater, Passaic, NJ, October 6, 1979

Van Morrison joins us this evening in The Lounge for a very pleasant interlude of live music.

Sunday Brings Little Feat’s “Dixie Chicken” as Our AOW, and the ‘Little Bit O’ Soul’ EP, December 11, 2022

It’s a Sunday in The Mermaid Lounge with the threat of what we call a ‘wintry mix’ in the air. That’s when the weather people hedge their bets because they can’t figure out if it’s going to be snow or rain or both. I’m hedging my bets with a nice day indoors listening to some great music!

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Dixie Chicken by Little Feat NEW!

This was Little Feat’s third studio album, released in 1973, and certainly became a landmark for the band. The title song would go a long way toward establishing the band’s great signature sound. Little Feat also added the great guitarist Paul Barrere and percussionist Sam Clayton. Bassist Kenny Gradney was also added to replace Roy Estrada. It signaled a change of the band’s sound, moving them toward New Orleans R & B and funk.This lineup would endure until Lowell George’s death in 1979 and the band’s subsequent breakup.

3:00 p.m. A Little Bit O’ Soul: Various Artists

This is the Grand Kahuna of our R & B/soul playlists which is all encompassing, and not just dedicated to Motown artists. Good Morning, Musicologists! It’s another keep-it-simple Sunday with Ram as our Album of The Week and Volume Two of our ‘Sixties Rotation.’

Here’s today’s musical lineup:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Ram by Paul & Linda McCartney NEW!

This is the only album ever attributed to the McCartney husband and wife team, and it’s one of my favorites. I remember playing the grooves out of this thing when it first came out. The album generated McCartney’s first number one U.S. single as a former Beatle with Uncle Albert/ Admiral Halsey. McCartney was in a very public feud with his former mates at the time and was subject to much criticism, but eventually Ram became one of McCartney’s most critically-acclaimed solo albums. It was also recognized as an early indie pop album. While we don’t give you the full 2012 expanded release here, we are including two extra songs that were part of the Ram sessions: Another Day and Oh Woman, Oh Why.
