We Leap Into December With Neil Young, Creedence Clearwater Revival and The (Young) Rascals, Thursday, December 1, 2022

Good Morning, Musicologists! We are in the final month of what has certainly been an eventful 2022 if nothing else, and we kick it off in style with some great programming. But fear not, we always have more Open Stream than we do planned music and that is by design!

Here are your tasty musical tidbits for today:

10:00 a.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Neil Young

We’ve got the final airing of our featured artist in this series on Saturday, but you can tune in today and hear Neil’s musical contribution to music as a member of CSNY, Buffalo Springfield and as a solo artist collaborating with bands like The International Harvesters, Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real and his longtime stand-by, Crazy Horse.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Green River by Creedence Clearwater Revival

We’re also winding down on this week’s AOW by Creedence. Our final airing of this will also be on Saturday, time still TBD. This was but one of three CCR album releases in 1969 alone, a musical tour de force.

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The (Young) Rascals

We wish a very happy birthday to the great Felix Cavaliere, the heart and soul of The Rascals, certainly one of the best bands during the best musical time of my life. It is only fitting that they occupy the spotlight as we close out Thursday’s programming.

We’re on the downslide to the weekend, folks, and life is way too short to listen to bad music. There’s no bad music here, we promise. We’ve got the first generation of classic rock n’ roll artists, those who inspired them, and those they have inspired. We’re on 24/7 without interruption and at no cost to you. Your money’s absolutely no good here. When you take the profit motive out, everything is better.

Robert Johnson only lived to the ripe old age of 27. He is a bona fide member of the 27 Club, and his musical recording career lasted a grand total of seven months. However, his recordings from 1936 and 1937 are historic and expose a combination of songwriting, singing and guitar playing that has influenced generations of blues musicians. Johnson is known as the master of the Delta Blues and one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame describes Robert Johnson as “the first ever rock star.”

Good Morning and welcome to another work week. Today we’ve got a couple of multi-artist playlists, one an EP and one not quite but, hey, everything is relative isn’t it? Including time. And that’s how we begin our musical programming today.

Here’s Monday’s musical journey:

10:00 a.m. Time is Relative: Various Artists NEW!

According to Einstein, everything’s relative, including time. Today’s new playlist gives you songs with references to time in the title, lyrics or both. Sunday in The Mermaid Lounge Brings Creedence Clearwater Revival With Our New AOW and Volume Two of The ‘Sixties Rotation’ EPs, November 27, 2022

Good Morning, Weekenders! The sun is already out here and we’ve got an easy day going today with some great music from the first generation of classic rockers with Volume Two of ‘The Sixties Rotation’ for five uninterrupted hours this afternoon.

Here’s today’s musical lineup:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Green River by Creedence Clearwater Revival NEW!

CCR, as they are popularly known, was a force in 1969, releasing three albums. Green River was one of those releases, and it gave us some great songs including the hits Bad Moon Rising and Green River, which both peaked at No. 2 on the charts. The songs Lodi and Commotion were also fan favorites, although they didn’t reach the chart status of the first two. John Fogerty was the creative force behind CCR, and he disliked the long, acid-infused jams popular at the time. CCR bucked the norm and preferred the tightly structured roots music that would actually make them famous. We love this band here in The Mermaid Lounge, and we believe they’ve never made a bad song.

2:00 p.m. The Sixties Rotation, Volume Two: Various Artists

Here we are at the second phase of our Sixties absorption, which mostly focuses on the mid-to-late musical portion of that decade. You will hear music from The Mamas & The Papas, Simon & Garfunkel, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Buffalo Springfield, Sly & The Family Stone, The Temptations, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Roy Orbison, The Yardbirds, Linda Ronstadt, The Byrds, Chuck Berry, Jackson Browne, Blind Faith, The Spencer Davis Group, Elvis Presley, The Box Tops, The Doors, Marvin Gaye, Wilson Pickett, The Band, Bob Dylan, Judy Collins, Donovan, The Ronettes, The Kinks, Jimmy Cliff, The Zombies, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Velvet Underground, Led Zeppelin, B. B. King and many more!

Tune in. Turn on. Drop out. Undoubtedly one of our favorite phrases. And if you don’t like foreign substances in your body, hell, get high on the music. This is a no-judgement zone. Always. We’re on 24/7 and we’re also always free of charge. No lie. And no surprises. Your money is no good here.

It’s Saturday and We’ve Got One Outgoing and One Incoming Singer-Songwriter, and Our Multi-Artist ‘The British Are Coming’ EP, November 26, 2022

Here we are again on Saturday. Seems weird this week with a Thursday holiday. I’m all discombobulated. But the good news is that I’m completely aware of what’s going on here musically. And it’s all great stuff.

Here’s today’s programming:

8:00 a.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Nanci Griffith

Today is the final airing of the late, great Nanci Griffith as our featured singer-songwriter. Get in on this one if you’ve got the time this morning. We’re starting a bit earlier than usual.

11:00 a.m. The British Are Coming: Various Artists

We’re back with our tribute to the British Invasion and beyond with today’s EP. You’ll hear the music of The Beatles, The Who, Dave Mason, Electric Light Orchestra, Petula Clark, The Zombies, The Hollies, Dusty Springfield, Small Faces, Led Zeppelin, The Kinks, Queen, The Dave Clark Five, The Bee Gees, The Moody Blues, Rod Stewart, George Harrison, Them, Herman’s Hermits, Gerry & The Pacemakers, Badfinger, The Yardbirds, Traffic, Elton John, Lulu, Pink Floyd, Yes, The Animals, Manfred Mann’s Earth Band, The Spencer Davis Group, Cream, Donovan and more!

7:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Neil Young NEW!

Tonight we bring in the new featured singer-songwriter, Neil Young, undoubtedly a Mermaid Lounge favorite. He’s in very good standing here. The Mermaid herself is very fond. Some days we have to keep her from turning this into Neil Young Radio. We’ve got a great set list on tap for tonight.

10:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Everybody Knows by Stephen Stills & Judy Collins

To close it out, we’ve got the final airing of this week’s Album of The Week by Stills and Collins. We’ll have a new album ready to roll in the morning.

Before, in between and after we’ve got our great Wide Open Stream under the guidance of The Music Mermaid, and you know she has impeccable taste. We are free 24/7 and we’re never off the air. We do not clog up the music pipeline with commercial advertising, and your money (and credit cards) are no good here.

Back to The Real World With Our ‘Water, Water Everywhere’ EP and The Pretenders In the Spotlight Later, Friday, November 25, 2022

Good Morning, Musicologists. Now, I’m all messed up with a Thursday holiday. I feel like this is Monday but, in fact, it’s Friday and my week is almost over (one more day tomorrow). That is what I’m thankful for in case anyone wants to know. And this great job I have messing with the music.

Here’s today’s lineup:

11:00 a.m. Water, Water Everywhere: Various Artists

Did you know that the earth is 71% water? I’m sure I’ve said this before. I have a tendency to repeat myself. Luckily, we don’t repeat a lot of music too quickly. But it is, and there is no shortage of songs on the subject of water. You’ll hear Paul McCartney, Deep Purple, Joe Cocker, Simon & Garfunkel, The Beatles, Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, Otis Redding, Neil Young, Elton John, The Doobie Brothers, Valerie Carter, Bob Dylan, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Al Green, Loggins & Messina, Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band, Linda Ronstadt, Spirit, The Grass Roots, The Beach Boys, Lindisfarne, Van Morrison, Bonnie Raitt, Carole King, Steely Dan, Tom Rush, Donovan and more!

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of The Pretenders

The Pretenders is one of those bands that just dug its hooks into me, and Chrissie Hynde is a goddamned force of nature, a pioneer and an authentic woman rocker who just won’t quit. We haven’t heard this one for a while, but it’s here tonight. It’s also one of our playlists that’s about to get an update, so next time around it’ll be expanded. In the meantime, enjoy.

It’s the day after Thanksgiving, also known as Black Friday. Now, most people think of Black Friday as the start of the Christmas shopping season. Personally? I think of it as life in hell if you’re in the retail world. And it remains life in hell until Christmas is over. But here in The Mermaid Lounge? The living is easy. We’ve got great music to help you get you through these trying capitalist times. And no. We will not play Christmas music. We promise.

It’s Turkey Day and We’ve Got Our Traditional Airing of the ‘Alice’s Restaurant’ Saga, the ‘Down in New Orleans’ Multi-Artist EP, and Our AOW Later, Thursday, November 24, 2022

Happy Thanksgiving, Musicologists! What are we thankful for today? Great music for one thing, and the fact that it’s totally free here on #BecomeUngovernable Radio. We’ve got a great line-up for you today, so don’t forget to tune us in.

Here’s today’s lineup:

11:00 a.m. Arlo Guthrie’s Alice’s Restaurant Massacree: A Thanksgiving Tradition

This is our fifth year of this great Tradition, all 18 minutes of Arlo Guthrie’s rambling historical narrative of Alice’s Restaurant. Whether the event really happened according to the musical legend or not has been the subject of much discussion over the years. However, it seems that The Berkshire Eagle has finally put the question to bed for all of us. Come join us for this great holiday tradition!

2:00 p.m. Down In New Orleans: Various Artists

We haven’t aired this great EP since sometime in September, but it’s back today for Thanksgiving. Not only do we have all of the rock n’ roll artists who were born in New Orleans, but we’re playing traditional New Orleans blues, jazz. R & B, and Cajun/Zydeco. You’ll hear BeauSoleil, Clifton Chenier, Lucinda Williams, Allen Toussaint, Dr. John, The Neville Brothers, Tony Joe White, Professor Longhair, Fats Domino, Irma Thomas, Allen Fontenot, Aaron Neville, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, The Daywalkers, the Boogaloo Swamis, Kermit Ruffins, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Magnolia Sisters, The Meters, Queen Ida and The BonTemps, Boozoo Chavis and many more!

8:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Everybody Knows by Stephen Stills and Judy Collins

This is our next-to-last airing of this album, the first and only collaboration between old lovers and friends from the sixties, Stephen Stills and Judy Collins. Don’t miss it. The final airing will be sometime on Saturday.

Come celebrate Thanksgiving with us here in The Mermaid Lounge. You can’t go wrong. You can kick back after that l-tryptophan kicks in and just chill. We don’t cost you a thing except time. No surprises. I promise,
