One of the world’s greatest performers at one of the world’s most vaunted venues right here. I’ve seen Bonnie Raitt in several small venues in Boston in my lifetime. There’s nothing like that experience.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Nothing But A Breeze by Jesse Winchester

Our second to last airing of this fine album. Our final will be on Saturday. Catch it while you can, folks! Jesse Winchester is one of the most underappreciated singer-songwriters of his generation.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Van Morrison

We haven’t heard this particular playlist in a while, so it’s a great time to break it out. I’ll say it again, Van Morrison is an insufferable cad. Don’t believe a word that comes from his mouth when he tells you he’s fighting for your freedom when he wants to pack in the tour venues during COVID-19. What he wants to do is line his pocket. I’ve also seen Van several times and he’s not exactly the nicest guy on stage either. But his music? One of the very best here.

Tune us in, folks. We are most definitely not-for-profit, and that is tough to find on the regular airwaves these days. Earlier this week, I drove in a U-Haul truck to move my daughter back to Boston. All they had was regular radio. I opted for silence instead.

This is an occasional feature here in The Mermaid Lounge. Today we celebrate the 40th anniversary of Hard Promises, released on May 5, 1981. It’s hard to imagine an album this good coming right on the heels of The Heartbreakers’ breakout album, Damn The Torpedoes! (last week’s Album of The Week, by the way), but it did.

It’s true that The Waiting was the anchor of Hard Promises, but there’s also A Woman In Love (It’s Not Me), Nightwatchman, A Thing About You, Something Big, Insider (featuring Stevie Nicks), and one of my favorite Heartbreaker songs of all time, Kings Road.

This is nearly three hours of the music that originally inspired me to start this crazy endeavor to begin with. His music has been recorded by Emmylou Harris, Elvis Costello, Jimmy Buffet, Joan Baez, Willie Nelson, and even Patti Page. You ought to get to know the guy.

We kick it all off with Jesse Winchester’s Nothing But A Breeze. Winchester is a guy who gets no respect, in my opinion. I’m quite happy I don’t pay a whit of attention to music critics, frankly. The rap on this one was that he covered three songs (they weren’t his own compositions). And? What’s wrong with that. Plenty of people have covered his songs, Emmylou Harris being one of them. Undoubtedly one of my favorite albums, so enjoy this one.

3:00 p.m. The Sixties Rotation, Volume Two: Various Artists

The music that inspired me to start this radio station takes us into the evening. You’ll hear Janis Joplin, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Byrds, The Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, The Who, The Searchers, The Dave Clark Five, Bob Dylan, The Band, Cream, Derek & The Dominos, and many others. Just tune in, turn on, and drop out.

This concert brings what many people feel is the greatest of all Joni Mitchell’s stage bands, composed of Pat Metheny (guitar), Jaco Pastorius (bass), Lyle Mays (keyboards), Michael Brecker (sax), and Don Alias (drums)…although I saw the Court & Spark tour as well with Tom Scott & The L.A. Express and thought that was pretty fabulous as well. But we quibble here, because no matter how you feel, this one’s a winner.

7:00 p.m. Tom Petty’s Peculiar Picks, Highlights From The Buried Treasure Show

Long before there was a Tom Petty Radio on Sirius XM, there was Tom Petty’s Buried Treasure Show where he morphed into our favorite DJ. I don’t know why they call this his “peculiar” picks. Frankly, Petty could give a less on the history of rock and roll, and that’s basically what he did with his radio show. He shared his personal record collection and educated us all. Here we offer you Mr. Petty, disc jockey. Enjoy. It’s a great multi-artist playlist.

We have two spotlights today as we also focus on The Temptations, one of the greatest R & B bands of the sixties and seventies. We’ll consider this a warm-up for the introduction of next weekend’s launch of our new long-playing A Little Bit O’Soul playlist (May 1).

Boston had some great little music venues back in the day, and The Unicorn was one of them. In the spring of ’66, it played host to one great blues band.

Speaking of da blues, Tom Petty once said he imagined his band getting old together, sitting in chairs, and singing the blues. Sadly, that day is gone now, but the Heartbreakers did a great job on the blues. Their Mojo album was a tribute to the blues. Today, we show you why Petty’s scenario would have been a great way to grow old.

7:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Medicine At Midnight by Foo Fighters

The second airing of Medicine At Midnight happens this evening. The album was delayed by COVID-19, but was worth the wait. The Foos are one of the very few “today” bands that get airplay here.

It’s The Ladies’ Day Out in The Mermaid Lounge Today, and the Foo Fighters Own Our Album of The Week, Sunday, April 18, 2021

Happy Sunday, People! It’s a fine day here in The Mermaid Lounge as we close our broadcasting week in fine style. We feature the new Foo Fighters album early on, then turn it over to the ladies for the rest of the programming day!

“Medicine at Midnight” by the Foo Fighters is our Album of The Week.

Here’s the lay of the land:

12:00 p.m. Ladies Day Out: Various Artists

This playlist was put together to show our commitment to the women of music, pioneers in their own right. It’s amazing to me how women continue to be put at the back of the bus in the rock n’roll music world. Carole King, a woman who has written many songs and made many people famous, and who has to her credit one of the biggest selling albums of all time in Tapestry, is just making the hall of fame this year. Linda Ronstadt, who has been singing since the sixties, and who was undeniably the Queen of Rock during the seventies, was not inducted until 2014. The Rock n’ Roll Hall of Shame is a fucking joke.

Here we are in 2021, and you’d be hard pressed to hear Bonnie Raitt, Linda Ronstadt, Aretha Franklin, or any other woman of their generation on any music station as part of a standard rotation. I call bullshit. Misogeny is alive and well in the music world, but not in The Mermaid Lounge.

9:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Medicine At Midnight by Foo Fighters NEW!

The band born from the demise of Nirvana gives us this week’s Album of the Week. Originally planned for 2020, it was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The band’s tenth studio album represents a departure from their usual sound. Dave Grohl also has some interesting commentary on the goings on that occurred during the recording of the album, which you can read here.

The second airing of our Album of The Week, one of Carly Simon’s biggest sellers and for good reason. It’s definitely our favorite Carly Simon album here at #BecomeUngovernable Radio.

7:00 p.m. Albert King & Stevie Ray Vaughan: In Session, December 6, 1983

A great session recorded live at CHCH-TV Studios in Ontario, Canada, when Stevie Ray Vaughan was 29 years old, and Albert King was in his sixtieth year. Two masters at work.
