Bonnie Raitt Live at The Troubadour, Van Morrison In the Spotlight, and Our Album of The Week, Thursday, May 6, 2021

Good Morning, Kids! Well, after two solid days of nothing but rain the sun shines brightly outside The Mermaid Lounge! We’ve got some great music on tap for today also!

We’ve got Bonnie Raitt live at the famed Troubadour to kick off our programming!

Here’s Thursday’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Bonnie Raitt Live at The Troubadour, West Hollywood, California, February 15, 1972

One of the world’s greatest performers at one of the world’s most vaunted venues right here. I’ve seen Bonnie Raitt in several small venues in Boston in my lifetime. There’s nothing like that experience.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Nothing But A Breeze by Jesse Winchester

Our second to last airing of this fine album. Our final will be on Saturday. Catch it while you can, folks! Jesse Winchester is one of the most underappreciated singer-songwriters of his generation.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Van Morrison

We haven’t heard this particular playlist in a while, so it’s a great time to break it out. I’ll say it again, Van Morrison is an insufferable cad. Don’t believe a word that comes from his mouth when he tells you he’s fighting for your freedom when he wants to pack in the tour venues during COVID-19. What he wants to do is line his pocket. I’ve also seen Van several times and he’s not exactly the nicest guy on stage either. But his music? One of the very best here.

Tune us in, folks. We are most definitely not-for-profit, and that is tough to find on the regular airwaves these days. Earlier this week, I drove in a U-Haul truck to move my daughter back to Boston. All they had was regular radio. I opted for silence instead.

Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of “Hard Promises” Followed by Our House Playlist, Wednesday, May 5, 2021

Good Morning, Music Lovers! We have another light programming day on tap. But what we have to offer is pretty potent, including our House playlist.

Today we bring you some of the music that inspired the radio station!

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Not Our Album of The Week: Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of Hard Promises by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers NEW!

This is an occasional feature here in The Mermaid Lounge. Today we celebrate the 40th anniversary of Hard Promises, released on May 5, 1981. It’s hard to imagine an album this good coming right on the heels of The Heartbreakers’ breakout album, Damn The Torpedoes! (last week’s Album of The Week, by the way), but it did.

It’s true that The Waiting was the anchor of Hard Promises, but there’s also A Woman In Love (It’s Not Me), Nightwatchman, A Thing About You, Something Big, Insider (featuring Stevie Nicks), and one of my favorite Heartbreaker songs of all time, Kings Road.

4:00 p.m. #BecomeUngovernable House Playlist: Various Artists

This is nearly three hours of the music that originally inspired me to start this crazy endeavor to begin with. It is due for an upgrade soon, but it’s still one of the best playlists we feature with Bob Dylan, The Beatles, The Animals, The Byrds, The Who, The Chambers Brothers, The Temptations, John Lennon, T. Rex, Barry McGuite, Edwin Starr, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Joan Baez, Peter Tosh, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, and more!

Tune in. Turn on. Drop out. It’s midweek. We all need a break. This is the perfect opportunity, is it not?

It’s Tuesday Bluesday Here in The Mermaid Lounge and We’ve Got Our Long-Playing Blues Playlist Plus Our Album of The Week, May 4, 2021

Good Morning, Bluesologists! It’s another fine Tuesday Bluesday here in The Mermaid Lounge and it’s time once again for our long-playing blues playlist, Someting Old, Something New, Something Borrowed and Something Blues! We’ve also got our second airing of our Album of The Week.

We kick off Tuesday Bluesday at 11:00 a.m. with more than four hours of non-stop blues!

Here’s your line-up:

11:00 a.m. Tuesday Bluesday: Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blues

We’ve got over four hours of uninterrupted blues to celebrate Tuesday Bluesday today. You’ll be hearing James Cotton, Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Koko Taylor, Eric Clapton, Delbert McClinton, Bonnie Raitt, Elmore James, The Rolling Stones, J. J. Cale, Johnny Winter, Albert King, Canned Heat, Ry Cooder, John Lee Hooker, The Animals, and many more!

7:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Nothing But A Breeze by Jesse Winchester

It’s our second airing of Nothing But A Breeze for the week today. As we said at the beginning, Jesse Winchester is one of the most underrated and underappreciated singer-songwriters of his generation, but certainly not by his peers. His music has been recorded by Emmylou Harris, Elvis Costello, Jimmy Buffet, Joan Baez, Willie Nelson, and even Patti Page. You ought to get to know the guy.

So, here we are again at the inevitable close: We run 24/7 with more wide open stream than programming, we’re totally free, we ask for no credit cards or personal information. Our DJ’s are pretty quiet, we accept no advertising, and The Music Mermaid has great taste in music. What more can you ask for. All you need is a tab:

It’s Sunday Here in The Mermaid Lounge with Our Sixties Rotation and “Nothing But A Breeze” by Jesse Winchester as our Album of The Week, May 2, 2021

Good Morning, Kids! It’s a day of rest here, and we’re keeping it simple with the music that inspired the radio station and Jesse Winchester owns our Album of The Week.

The Sixties are back this afternoon!

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Nothing But A Breeze by Jesse Winchester NEW!

We kick it all off with Jesse Winchester’s Nothing But A Breeze. Winchester is a guy who gets no respect, in my opinion. I’m quite happy I don’t pay a whit of attention to music critics, frankly. The rap on this one was that he covered three songs (they weren’t his own compositions). And? What’s wrong with that. Plenty of people have covered his songs, Emmylou Harris being one of them. Undoubtedly one of my favorite albums, so enjoy this one.

3:00 p.m. The Sixties Rotation, Volume Two: Various Artists

The music that inspired me to start this radio station takes us into the evening. You’ll hear Janis Joplin, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Byrds, The Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, The Who, The Searchers, The Dave Clark Five, Bob Dylan, The Band, Cream, Derek & The Dominos, and many others. Just tune in, turn on, and drop out.

It’s Sunday. A day of rest. No better way to kick back than with some good music and the vice of your choice, whether it be legal or illegal.

Friday Brings Joni Mitchell’s Shadows & Light Tour, and Tom Petty’s Buried Treasure, April 30, 2021

Good Friday Morning! We have a lot of Open Stream today, but the programming we offer is outstanding on this fine end to the month of April.

This evening, we bring you Tom Petty, DJ.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Joni Mitchell, The Shadows & Light Tour, Live at The Santa Barbara County Bowl, September 9, 1979 NEW!

This concert brings what many people feel is the greatest of all Joni Mitchell’s stage bands, composed of Pat Metheny (guitar), Jaco Pastorius (bass), Lyle Mays (keyboards), Michael Brecker (sax), and Don Alias (drums)…although I saw the Court & Spark tour as well with Tom Scott & The L.A. Express and thought that was pretty fabulous as well. But we quibble here, because no matter how you feel, this one’s a winner.

7:00 p.m. Tom Petty’s Peculiar Picks, Highlights From The Buried Treasure Show

Long before there was a Tom Petty Radio on Sirius XM, there was Tom Petty’s Buried Treasure Show where he morphed into our favorite DJ. I don’t know why they call this his “peculiar” picks. Frankly, Petty could give a less on the history of rock and roll, and that’s basically what he did with his radio show. He shared his personal record collection and educated us all. Here we offer you Mr. Petty, disc jockey. Enjoy. It’s a great multi-artist playlist.

Good day to tune us in for sure. I know. We say that every day, but it’s true. We’re not-for-profit and we take no advertising. We never ask you for a subscription, a credit card, or personal data.

It’s Tuesday Bluesday in The Lounge With The Blues Project, Eric Clapton & Friends, and “Damn The Torpedoes,” April 27, 2021

Good Morning, Bluesologists! It’s another Tuesday Bluesday here in The Mermaid Lounge, and we’ve got a pretty great programming gig coming up today!

We’ve got The Blues Project on tap for today!

Here’s today’s Blues line-up!

1:00 p.m. The Blues Project Live at The Cafe Au Go Go, Greenwich Village, New York, November 24-27, 1965 NEW!

This live recorded album was the debut of The Blues Project, and was recorded between November 24-27, 1965 at the fabled Cafe Au Go Go in Greenwich Village, New York.

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Damn The Torpedoes! by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

The second airing of this most magificent album; the one that catapulted The Heartbreakers into the limelight and launched a 40-year love affair with their fans.

8:00 p.m. Eric Clapton & Friends: The Crossroads Guitar Festival Revisited

Join Eric Clapton and friends for a few hours of really great blues guitar music, including Buddy Guy, Susan Tedeschi, Derek Trucks, B B. King, Doyle Bramhall III, Jeff Beck, Carlos Santana, Gary Clark, Jr., The Robert Cray Band, Joe Walsh, Sheryl Crow, ZZ Top, and more!

Tune us in on a Tuesday Bluesday. It’s a great day to give us a shot, people. A splendid time is guaranteed for all!

We Put Both Roy Orbison and The Temptations In the Spotlight, Give You the Final Airing of ‘Medicine At Midnight’ by the Foos, and Later “Live Dead,” Saturday, April 24, 2021

Good Morning, Kids! It’s another Saturday in The Mermaid Lounge and we’ve got some great programming again. Saturday is one of our heaviest programming days, but we don’t get carried away. There is plenty of wide Open Stream on tap every day here.

Happy Belated Birthday to the late great (and former Wilbury) Roy Orbison.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Roy Orbison

Yesterday was Roy Orbison’s birthday. The man was a musical marvel with that great 5-octave voice. It should also be noted that he was a former member of the greatest supergroup in popular music history, The Traveling Wilburys. In honor of Roy, we put him In the Spotlight today.

4:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of The Temptations

We have two spotlights today as we also focus on The Temptations, one of the greatest R & B bands of the sixties and seventies. We’ll consider this a warm-up for the introduction of next weekend’s launch of our new long-playing A Little Bit O’Soul playlist (May 1).

7:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Medicine At Midnight by Foo Fighters

Today we also offer up the final airing of the Foo Fighters’ newest album, Medicine At Midnight. Tomorrow when you roll out of bed, we’ll have a brand new selection for you.

10:00 p.m. Live Dead! The Grateful Dead Live at The World Amphitheatre, Tinley Park, Illinois, July 21, 1990 NEW!

Of course, we have our usual airing of Live Dead, this one was the opening of a three-night stand at The World Amphitheatre in Tinley Park. More magic from one of the world’s greatest road bands.

Come on, folks. Tune us in. We’re not-for-profit and outside the system. Join your European and Asian friends this morning by clicking the link below.

It’s Tuesday Bluesday With the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, and Our Album of The Week, April 20, 2021

Please, allow us to also mention the fact that it is 4/20. And you know what that means. Is there a better combination than weed and great music. We think not.

We kick off Tuesday Bluesday with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band!

Here’s your Tuesday Bluesday line-up:

11:00 a.m. The Paul Butterfield Blues Band Live at The Unicorn Coffee House, Boston, MA, Spring 1966

Boston had some great little music venues back in the day, and The Unicorn was one of them. In the spring of ’66, it played host to one great blues band.

3:00 p.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Sing The Blues

Speaking of da blues, Tom Petty once said he imagined his band getting old together, sitting in chairs, and singing the blues. Sadly, that day is gone now, but the Heartbreakers did a great job on the blues. Their Mojo album was a tribute to the blues. Today, we show you why Petty’s scenario would have been a great way to grow old.

7:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Medicine At Midnight by Foo Fighters

The second airing of Medicine At Midnight happens this evening. The album was delayed by COVID-19, but was worth the wait. The Foos are one of the very few “today” bands that get airplay here.

Tune us in. We’re not-for-profit in a serious way. We don’t pay Amazon or Apple for our music. We find it elsewhere and for less money. We don’t feed the machine in any sense of the word.

It’s The Ladies’ Day Out in The Mermaid Lounge Today, and the Foo Fighters Own Our Album of The Week, Sunday, April 18, 2021

Happy Sunday, People! It’s a fine day here in The Mermaid Lounge as we close our broadcasting week in fine style. We feature the new Foo Fighters album early on, then turn it over to the ladies for the rest of the programming day!

“Medicine at Midnight” by the Foo Fighters is our Album of The Week.

Here’s the lay of the land:

12:00 p.m. Ladies Day Out: Various Artists

This playlist was put together to show our commitment to the women of music, pioneers in their own right. It’s amazing to me how women continue to be put at the back of the bus in the rock n’roll music world. Carole King, a woman who has written many songs and made many people famous, and who has to her credit one of the biggest selling albums of all time in Tapestry, is just making the hall of fame this year. Linda Ronstadt, who has been singing since the sixties, and who was undeniably the Queen of Rock during the seventies, was not inducted until 2014. The Rock n’ Roll Hall of Shame is a fucking joke.

Here we are in 2021, and you’d be hard pressed to hear Bonnie Raitt, Linda Ronstadt, Aretha Franklin, or any other woman of their generation on any music station as part of a standard rotation. I call bullshit. Misogeny is alive and well in the music world, but not in The Mermaid Lounge.

9:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Medicine At Midnight by Foo Fighters NEW!

The band born from the demise of Nirvana gives us this week’s Album of the Week. Originally planned for 2020, it was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The band’s tenth studio album represents a departure from their usual sound. Dave Grohl also has some interesting commentary on the goings on that occurred during the recording of the album, which you can read here.

On that note, tune us in. We’re here 24/7 and we are not for profit (and not for sale). We are non-intrusive. We never ask for a credit card or your personal information. We don’t track, spindle or mutilate. Enjoy your Sunday.

It’s Tuesday Bluesday With Johnny Winter, Albert King, and Stevie Ray Vaughan! In the Middle, It’s Our Album of The Week, April 13, 2021

Good Morning, Bluesologists! Here we are on another Tuesday Bluesday in The Mermaid Lounge. We’ve got a great selection for you today.

On this fine Tuesday Bluesday, we feature Johnny Winter live at The Bottom Line!

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Johnny Winter Live at The Bottom Line, New York City, September 5, 1978

For reasons unknown to me, sometimes this guy is overlooked by blues music lovers (but not his peers, like Muddy Waters). He is never overlooked here in The Mermaid Lounge either, and today we feature him live at The Bottom Line.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Hotcakes by Carly Simon

The second airing of our Album of The Week, one of Carly Simon’s biggest sellers and for good reason. It’s definitely our favorite Carly Simon album here at #BecomeUngovernable Radio.

7:00 p.m. Albert King & Stevie Ray Vaughan: In Session, December 6, 1983

A great session recorded live at CHCH-TV Studios in Ontario, Canada, when Stevie Ray Vaughan was 29 years old, and Albert King was in his sixtieth year. Two masters at work.

Tuesday Bluesday is always a good day to tune us in, of course. But then again, any day of the week is a good day to avail yourself of our services. We are not-for-profit radio. Period. End of story.
