It’s Our Monthly Visit With The British, and Carly Simon’s “Hotcakes” is Our Album of The Week, Sunday, April 11, 2021

Good Morning, Musicologists! It’s another fine Sunday here in The Mermaid Lounge (although, I confess that I am writing this earlier than usual). We have a new album of the week, and we feature our five-hour British Invasion playlist today.

Here’s today’s simple but satisfying line-up:

12:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Hotcakes by Carly Simon NEW!

Hotcakes was Carly Simon’s fourth studio album, released by Elektra Records in 1974. She recorded the album while she was pregnant with her first child, and I have to say that it’s one of the best albums on the planet. It is also one of the hottest-sellers of her career. Unfortunately for Carly, Elektra released two other albums that year, one was Planet Waves by Dylan and the other was Court & Spark by Joni Mitchell. That kept Hotcakes off the top spot. It peaked at number three.

The album generated two hits, Mockingbird, which she recorded with her then-husband James Taylor, and the other was Haven’t Got Time For The Pain. However, I have to agree with David Geffen’s assessment that Forever My Love was the finest song she ever recorded.

Once again, we give you more than five hours of great music from across the pond, from the British Invasion bands up through the mid eighties. You’ll hear The Clash, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Searchers, Lulu, The Dave Clark Five, Them (featuring Van Morrison), Electric Light Orchestra, The Kinks, Led Zeppelin, Cream, The Spencer Davis Group, The Who, and then some.

My fingers are tired, so I’m not going into all the detail about how you should be listening to us. You know, we’re totally free, ask no personal information, take no advertising, no commercial interruptions…all that shit. Just do it.

Most of the British Invasion bands were steeped in the blues and R & B, and this is certainly true of Mick Jagger and The Rolling Stones. Today we have a great union live from the famed Checkerboard Lounge in Chicago between The Stones and Muddy Waters.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Love Stinks by The J. Geils Band

Certainly my favorite J. Geils album out of the many they gave us. In my humble opinion, they were the true bad boys of Boston, no matter what anyone else tells you.

7:00 p.m. John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers Live at The BBC (1965-1967)

This excellent compilation features all of the Bluesbreakers’ live BBC performances plus the the “Old Grey Whistle Test” performances.

Steve Winwood In the Spotlight, Absolutely The Animals, and Volume 3 of Our Summer of Love Series Kicks Off The Week, Monday, March 29, 2021

Good Morning, Gang! We kick off the week with some excellent music that we’ve not circulated in a while, including the third volume of our Summer of Love Series.

We kick the week off by putting the legendary Steve Winwood In the Spotlight!

We’ve got the full magilla here, featuring Winwood’s solo career, as well as his time with Blind Faith, Traffic, and the Spencer Davis Group. This is a really excellent playlist that is not to be missed!

3:00 p.m. Deb’s Stream: Absolutely The Animals

This is one band that should not ever be forgotten. Formed in the early sixties in Newcastle upon Tyne, the band is considered a British R & B band, but they managed to toss in plenty of rock and psychedelic music as well. They moved to London in 1964 after hitting the big time. Eric Burdon is one badass vocalist.

7:00 p.m. The Summer of Love, Volume 3: Various Artists

We took a day off from this series yesterday, but we bring it back to close it out today. It features Vanilla Fudge, Lulu, Wilson Pickett, The Association, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, The Doors, The Beatles, The Bee Gees, Donovan, Jackie Wilson, The Youngbloods and more!

It’s Tuesday Bluesday With Clapton & Friends, Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac, and Our Album of The Week Later, March 23, 2021

Good Morning, Bluesologists! Here we are in The Mermaid Lounge preparing for another Tuesday Bluesday, and we’re digging deep for some stuff we haven’t heard in a while.

Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac. Most aren’t aware that Fleetwood Mac was originally a real blues band.

Here’s some real blue-eyed blues rock for you, led by Eric Clapton who has a penchant for getting his friends together for a great time. This is no exception.

3:00 p.m. Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac Live at The Warehouse, New Orleans (1970)

Most people think of Fleetwood Mac as a pop band, but the original Fleetwood Mac was a blues band, led by Peter Green. This is a great collection here known commercially as The Warehouse Tapes. Keep in mind this was recorded in 1970, so there’s no great engineering going on with this stuff. It’s just…there.

7:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Let It Be…Naked by The Beatles

Again, the stripped down version of the Fab Four’s final album the way it was originally meant to be heard, and the way we here in The Mermaid Lounge prefer it.

Good Morning, Music Lovers! Today, we honor the women of popular music with our brand new Ladies Day Out playlist, giving you exactly 4 hours, 54 minutes, and 55 seconds of music from some of the most amazing female singers of our time.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Let It Be…Naked by The Beatles NEW!

To be sure, Phil Spector was a musical genius, having developed the ‘wall of sound’ used by so many performers. I like the wall of sound enough, but probably not as much as others, I have to confess. The Beatles were on the outs when they recorded Let It Be, and mostly they were not in the studio together during time. Phil Spector produced this album and, rumor has it, that John Lennon brought him the tapes when he was pissed off. The first release of this album was with the wall of souond. Along came Paul McCartney in 2004, convinced that the original release was not what was originally envisioned for the album. The result is this stripped down version, and I tend to concur with McCartney here.

2:00 p.m. Ladies Day Out: Various Artists NEW!

Women’s music is nothing new to us, but we’ve never had a long-running women’s playlist until this day. Now, we do. Women continue to get the short end of the stick when it comes to rock music. Hell, that infamous pay-to-play radio conglomerate (whose name we shall not mention) offers quite a few individual stations dedicated to the men of rock, but not one single station dedicated to women. In fact, if you tune in any classic rock station, you almost never hear women played at all. But here, you do.

This playlist features many women. We have Bonnie Raitt, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, Cilla Black, Carla Thomas, Ann Peebles, Aretha Franklin, Sheryl Crow, Petula Clark, Nicolette Larson, Wendy Waldman, Phoebe Snow, Norah Jones, and many others. Check out the Playlist section of this blog for a complete set list. All you need to do is scroll to the bottom! It should be up on the blog by noon.

This would be an excellent day to tune us in unless, of course, you’re one of those guys who just can’t bear the thought of women in the musical spotlight for an extended period. This would not be your day.

Bob Marley & The Wailers Live, Clapton & Friends Pay Tribute to J.J. Cale, the Final Airing of Eva Cassidy’s AOW, and Live Dead, on Saturday, March 20, 2021

We’re going to kick off the day with the man who is rightfully seen as a pioneer of Reggae music, Bob Marley. Widely recognized as the premier Jamaican singer, songwriter and musician, he and the Wailers developed a unique sound of their own by fusing together elements of Reggae, Ska and Rocksteady.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Songbird by Eva Cassidy FINAL AIRING!

Today is the final airing of Eva Cassidy’s Songbird album. She had a beautiful voice that many people still have yet to experience. She is now in our standard rotation, but this album will give you the immersion experience. Enjoy before we choose a new album tomorrow.

6:00 p.m. Eric Clapton & Friends Pay Tribute to J.J. Cale

Eric Clapton and his friends pay tribute to one of the great singer-songwriters of any generation, J.J. Cale, the man who pioneered what is called the Tulsa Sound, which fused blues, swamp music, rockabilly, country and jazz. Although he avoided the limelight, artists like Tom Petty, Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler and Neil Young believe he was one of the most important musicl figures in popular music.

10:00 p.m. Live Dead! The Grateful Dead Live at The Carrier Dome at Syracuse University, October 22, 1983 NEW!

The boys are back for another fan-recorded event live from the Carrier Dome at Syracuse. Enjoy this entry from the worlds premier jam band.

Today is our second airing of Eva Cassidy’s Songbird album, a compilation album released posthumously. Eva Cassidy never got to appreciate stardom, dying tragically of cancer at the age of 33 in 1996, but her music lives on.

Speaking of the blues, this is a great bootleg from The Country Club. Rounding out the band we have Doug Wimbish on bass, Terry Bozio on drums, and Phil Ashley on keyboards.

Good Morning, Bluesologists! It’s another Tuesday Bluesday in The Mermaid Lounge, and we’ve got a bit of the blues lined up for you today starting with Janis.

Janis Joplin was a force of fucking nature, gone before her time.

11:00 a.m. Janis Joplin & The Kozmic Blues Band, Live at The Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, April 1, 1969

Doesn’t matter if she was solo, with Big Brother & The Holding Company or The Kozmic Blues Band, Janis Joplin gave us some seriously great blues-rock. She was a force of nature who burned bright, and was gone before we knew it.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Heart of Mine by Maria Muldaur

Funny thing here, Maria Muldaur has a varied musical history, starting out in the folk houses of Greenwich Village, but she is also known as a pretty solid blues singer as well. On this particular album, she does a great job (and a bit bluesy at that) on the love songs of Bob Dylan (yes, he was not just about protest and social issues).

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of B.B. King

The master of the blues with his girl Lucille will pay us a visit as our final musical programming of the day. It’s a great way to close out Tuesday Bluesday.
