Edgar Winter’s heartfelt 17-song tribute to his brother, killer bluesman Johnny Winter, garnered him a 2023 Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album just this past week at the age of 76. The Winter brothers are legends in the classic rock arena and, along with Bonnie Raitt (who won this year at the age of 73), just go to prove that the generation of musicians who inspired this radio station have real staying power.

At mid-afternoon, we turn the whole deal over to the women of music to take us into the evening hours. Today we celebrate Bonnie Raitt’s eleventh Grammy, won just earlier this week in what even she considered a stunning upset. It was for Song of the Year, winning for the first time as a composer for the song Just Like That from her latest album. She’s not only a great singer and songwriter, she’s a badass slide guitarist. Winning at the age of 73 proves that the generation of artists we built this station around has staying power. We’ve updated the playlist as well to include our favorite newer songs by Bonnie.

4:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Bobbie Gentry FINAL AIRING!

This is the final airing of Bobbie Gentry as our featured singer-songwriter this week. She was an amazing songwriter who just wanted to write songs for others to sing, but it didn’t quite work out that way. She charted 11 singles before she moved into what we consider early retirement in the late seventies. She never wanted the limelight, but her unique talents changed her path for a time.

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Carole King

This evening we celebrate Carole King, who is not only in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame but also in the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Her list of compositions has got to be more than a mile long. On February 9, Carole King turned 81 years young, and today is the 52nd anniversary of the release of her seminal album Tapestry.

As I’m learning, many people don’t know who the I-Threes are. They are Rita Marley, Judy Mowatt, and Marcia Griffiths and they are the most influential female band in Reggae and Ska who provided the background voices for Bob Marley & The Wailers. They also recorded albums individually, so today, we enlighten those who have never before heard them sing. It’s a treat.

7:00 p.m. Blind Faith Live at The Earl Warren Showgrounds, Santa Barbara, CA, August 16, 1969

Blind Faith were an English supergroup featuring Steve Winwood, Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker, and Ric Grech. They weren’t around for very long, only for one album and one extended summer tour. We’ve got one of those performances from that tour for you today. (I’m sure that the Earl Warren Showgrounds were used for more than music, but the thought of a psychedelic rock band performing at a venue named after a Supreme Court judge makes me chuckle.)

We’re here no matter how damned tired we are because we have The Music Mermaid and she is large and in charge. We’re on 24/7 (not just when we have programming) totally free to the listening public. His friends included blues greats like Etta James, Gladys Knight, Chaka Khan, Paul Butterfield, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan and several more. We bring this great album to you today!

3:00 p.m. Ladies Day Out: Various Artists

One of our absolute favorite days is the one where the women of music take over the airwaves here for several hours of music that encompasses all musical styles (there are some exclusions but we don’t need to list them if you’re a listener). To this day, the women of music get the short end of the stick on many radio stations, but not this one. Monday Brings You Santana In the Spotlight, Hot Tuna ‘Live’ at The Fillmore, and The All-Girl Revue, Volume Five, on January 2, 2023

Good morning Latin rock lovers and musicologists alike! Today we give Santana its due by putting Carlos Santana and his great band In the Spotlight. We also give you some ‘live’ Hot Tuna and the Women wrap up the programming later.

Here’s today’s musical lineup:

11:00 a.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Santana NEW!

Guitar great Carlos Santana started his band in San Francisco back in 1966. They appeared for the first time at Woodstock in 1969. Santana has stood the test of time, but with many different lineups over the years. The one constant has been Carlos Santana. He recently reunited the original band on the road. We finally give Carlos Santana and his band the spotlight it deserves.

3:00 p.m. Hot Tuna Live at The Fillmore West, San Francisco, CA, March 4, 1988

This great blues-rock band was formed in 1969 by Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady, former members of the Jefferson Airplane. Like Santana, they’ve had many musical lineups over the yeard, but Kaukonen and Casady have remained the band’s centerpieces. Today we have them live from The Fillmore.

7:00 p.m. The All-Girl Revue Five, Various Artists

We close out the evening’s programming with the women of music. I keep typing the ‘women of rock’ but that would be inaccurate because these female-based playlists offer such a diverse array of styles. You’ll hear Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon, Jackie DeShannon, Chi Coltrane, Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton, Petula Clark, Irma Thomas, Chrissie Hynde (The Pretenders), Christine McVie (Fleetwood Mac), Sheryl Crow, Shawn Colvin, Ann Peebles, Valerie Carter, Rosanne Cash, Lucinda Williams and more!

Linda Ronstadt recognized his immense songwriting talents by recording Carmelita and Poor Poor Pitiful Me, Hasten Down The Wind and Mohammed’s Radio. (I love them all but I think Mohammed’s Radio is brilliant.) Warren Zevon also had a great solo career, starting off with his breakthrough album, Excitable Boy, one of our all-time favorites. Tune him in.
