There’s a big campaign out there on social media to get Dan Fogelberg inducted into the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame. Considering the fact that they’ve inducted rap artists, ignoring a guy like Dan Fogelberg seems even more ridiculous. But then again, they didn’t induct Linda Ronstadt until she could no longer sing, and it took Carole King until 2021. These are WTF moments for me. Nevertheless, hope springs eternal. We love Dan Fogelberg here in The Mermaid Lounge, and we play his music for you tonight.

Sunday Brings Little Feat’s “Dixie Chicken” as Our AOW, and the ‘Little Bit O’ Soul’ EP, December 11, 2022

It’s a Sunday in The Mermaid Lounge with the threat of what we call a ‘wintry mix’ in the air. That’s when the weather people hedge their bets because they can’t figure out if it’s going to be snow or rain or both. I’m hedging my bets with a nice day indoors listening to some great music!

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Dixie Chicken by Little Feat NEW!

This was Little Feat’s third studio album, released in 1973, and certainly became a landmark for the band. The title song would go a long way toward establishing the band’s great signature sound. Little Feat also added the great guitarist Paul Barrere and percussionist Sam Clayton. Bassist Kenny Gradney was also added to replace Roy Estrada. It signaled a change of the band’s sound, moving them toward New Orleans R & B and funk.This lineup would endure until Lowell George’s death in 1979 and the band’s subsequent breakup.

3:00 p.m. A Little Bit O’ Soul: Various Artists

This is the Grand Kahuna of our R & B/soul playlists which is all encompassing, and not just dedicated to Motown artists. Sunday in The Mermaid Lounge Brings Creedence Clearwater Revival With Our New AOW and Volume Two of The ‘Sixties Rotation’ EPs, November 27, 2022

Good Morning, Weekenders! The sun is already out here and we’ve got an easy day going today with some great music from the first generation of classic rockers with Volume Two of ‘The Sixties Rotation’ for five uninterrupted hours this afternoon.

Here’s today’s musical lineup:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Green River by Creedence Clearwater Revival NEW!

CCR, as they are popularly known, was a force in 1969, releasing three albums. Green River was one of those releases, and it gave us some great songs including the hits Bad Moon Rising and Green River, which both peaked at No. 2 on the charts. The songs Lodi and Commotion were also fan favorites, although they didn’t reach the chart status of the first two. John Fogerty was the creative force behind CCR, and he disliked the long, acid-infused jams popular at the time. CCR bucked the norm and preferred the tightly structured roots music that would actually make them famous. We love this band here in The Mermaid Lounge, and we believe they’ve never made a bad song.

Here we are at the second phase of our Sixties absorption, which mostly focuses on the mid-to-late musical portion of that decade. And yes, everybody knows that the two were a “thing” in 1968 into 1969, and that Stephen Stills wrote songs about her, namely Suite: Judy Blue Eyes and Judy. In spite of the fact that Stills has played on several of Collins’ songs, they never made an album together or toured together until 2017, with the release of this collaboration. We’ve got it for you this week.

We feature Nanci Griffith as this week’s singer-songwriter whose musical style encompassed folk and country, and what she called “folkabilly.” She was a frequent performer on Austin City Limits and, although she suffered from severe writer’s block from 2004 through 2009, she remains one of the most respected singer-songwriters in popular music. She often recorded duets with others, including Emmylou Harris, John Prine, Don McLean, Jimmy Buffett, and Willie Nelson. You can read more about Nanci Griffith here.

She had already released Don’t Cry Now in 1973, but 1974 was the year for Heart Like A Wheel and that album propelled Linda Ronstadt’s career into the stratosphere. She began that climb to the top in 1975 and was the Queen of Rock during the seventies, gracing the covers of Rolling Stone (more than once), Time, Newsweek, Cashbox, Circus, Creem and others. Perhaps his most famous composition is Angel From Montgomery, which became an iconic identifier for Bonnie Raitt. We kick off his week tonight.
