Happy Sunday Funday here in the lounge, where we give you our Ladies Day Out long player and a brand new Album of The Week dedicated to a rock n’ roll pioneer.
The Beatles hanging out with Fats Domino, a rock n’ roll game changer who should not ever be forgotten
Here’s your Sunday Funday line-up:
11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Goin’ Home, A Tribute toFats Domino (Various Artists) NEW!
The man from New Orleans was truly a pioneer in rock n’ roll, and his contemporaries knew that. So did the bands he inspired. They got together to pay him tribute. You’ll hear Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers (with an exceptional version of I’m Walkin’), Paul McCartney, Elton John, Willie Nelson, Neil Young, Los Lobos. Lucinda Williams, Art Neville, Robbie Robertson, Irma Thomas & Marcia Ball, Corinne Bailey Rae, Bonnie Raitt & John Cleary, Norah Jones, Bruce Hornsby, John Lennon and many more.
3:00 p.m. Ladies Day Out: Various Artists
At mid-afternoon, we turn the festivities over to the women of music. I hesitate to say rock n’ roll because so many genres are represented in this playlist. You’ll hear Linda Ronstadt, Dusty Springfield, The Pretenders (Chrissie Hynde), Carly Simon, Aretha Franklin, Laura Nyro, Bonnie Raitt, Cilla Black, Ann Peebles, The Supremes, Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Emmylou Harris, Maria Muldaur, Eva Cassidy, Lulu, Wendy Waldman, Tracy Chapman, Melissa Etheridge, Joan Baez, Valerie Carter, Dolly Parton, Carla Thomas, Carole King, and so many more. This is five hours of uninterrupted music from The Mermaid Lounge, where women are decidedly not second class citizens.
It’s a great day here on #BecomeUngovernable Radio and we do hope you’ll join our friends from around the world and tune us in. Here’s today’s line-up:
11:00 a.m. The Sixties Rotation, Volume Two: Various Artists
Earlier in the month we had the Original Sixties Rotation; today it’s time for volume two. This playlist includes The Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, Janis Joplin, Buffalo Springfield, The Four Tops, Roy Orbison, The Yardbirds, James Brown, Chuck Berry, The Box Tops, Vanilla Fudge, The Zombies, Sly & The Family Stone, Marvin Gaye, The Doors, Cream, and more!
7:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Why Wait! by Kate Taylor FINAL AIRING!
We warned that this day was coming! Tonight is the final airing of Kate Taylor’s first album in fifty years, and a great one it is. Tomorrow, we’ll have a brand new album for you when you roll out of bed.
10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at The Mosque, Richmond, Virginia, May 25, 1977 NEW!
Another new live performance this week from Jerry Garcia and the gang, the world’s ultimate jam band. This one comes from The Mosque in Virginia.
The weekend is here. For most of us, it’s rest time (unless you’re in retail like me). So, tune us in. We are absolutely, positively 100% free with no strings attached. No advertising to mess up the flow, and no mouthy disc jockeys.
Good Morning, Musicologists! We close the week by giving you the Beatles Top 100 songs and our multi-artist ‘By The Numbers’ playlist.
Today it’s The Beatles Top 100 to open the day’s programming!
Here’s today’s musical programming:
11:00 a.m. The Beatles Top 100 NEW!
We have two house bands. The Beatles is one of those house bands. (Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers is the other.) This list is in no numerical order. It was done very scientifically, of course. Some Beatle fans (including me) sat around getting stoned and just threw out titles. If we agreed, we kept the song on the list. We scrubbed the ones we didn’t agree on. That’s about as scientific as we can get at this stage of the game. Some day when I am indeed fully retired, we’ll open this up to listeners by email and take votes. But for now, this is what you get. We like this list a lot.
The list itself will appear under the Playlist tab on the blog before I head out to work at 10:00 a.m. Check it out.
7:00 p.m. By The Numbers: Various Artists
Songs with numbers in the titles, or the lyrics…or both. Just over two hours of great music by many artists, including Alice Cooper, James Taylor, The Mamas &The Papas, J.J. Cale, Mudcrutch, Three Dog Night, The Doors, Stevie Nicks, Shawn Colvin, Rosanne Cash, The Searchers, Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell, Paul Simon, Wilson Pickett, Bob Marley & The Wailers, The Searchers, The Beatles, and more!
Before, in between, and after we have wide Open Stream with selections by The Music Mermaid. She has impeccabletaste and plenty of songs to choose from. We’re free. We’re free 24/7. No subscription or credit card required. And no personal information requested. What more could you ask for?
Good Morning, Lovers of The British Invasion. Today we’re featuring a couple of bands who took part in the musical assault on our shores.
The British blues-rock band extraordinaire, Eric Burdon & The Animals
Here’s today’s line-up:
11:00 a.m. Deb’s Stream: Absolutely The Animals!
This is essentially another name for a “spotlight” feature because that’s what we’re doing here…putting The Animals in the musical spotlight.
3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Why Wait! by Kate Taylor
We’re winding down on this week’s Album of The Week. Our final airing of Kate Taylor’s great new album will be on Saturday, so get it while you can!
7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of The Kinks
Another great British band here, although somewhat underrated in my opinion given all of the great bands that came out of England during the British Invasion years. Tom Petty often said that Ray Davies is an unheralded songwriter, and I agree with him.
As always, a great day to tune us in as we celebrate a couple of bands from The British Invasion years. Before, after and in between we have our usual wide Open Stream courtesy of The Music Mermaid.
It’s our usual Saturday here in The Mermaid Lounge as we kick the day off with our R & B/Soul longplayer, the final airing of our album of the week, and the usual LIVE DEAD.
Nina Simone is just one of the artists you’ll hear in ‘A Little Bit O’ Soul’
Here’s today’s line-up:
11:00 a.m. A Little Bit O’ Soul: Various Artists
Today we give you more than five hours of uninterrupted soul and R & B sounds with The Temptations, Nina Simone, Ray Charles, Diana Ross & The Supremes, The Four Tops, Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, The Drifters, Sam Cooke, Stevie Wonder, Chuck Berry, James Brown, The Shirelles, Curtis Mayfield, Etta James, Al Green, Bill Withers, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Sam & Dave, Marvin Gaye, Carla Thomas and more!
7:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Sing It! by Marcia Ball, Irma Thomas, and Tracy Nelson FINAL AIRING!
This will be the final airing of this great blues and R & B album, so get on it while you can! Tomorrow when you wake up, there will be a brand new selection.
10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at The Century City Convention Hall, Wichita, Kansas, November 17, 1972 NEW!
Another soundboard recording from the ultimate road warriors here, and another brand new selection.
It’s our usual busy Saturday, but it remains that the bulk of our programming on any given day remains wide Open Stream. We’re free. We’re uninterrupted by commercials. And we do not ask for your personal informtion. All you need is a tab to access the best music on the planet from the link below.
Good Morning, Music Lovers! We’ve got a pretty good program today…at least we think so. It begins at 11:00 a.m. as usual. Today we open with John Lennon In the Spotlight.

11:00 a.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of John Lennon

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Sing It! by Marcia Ball, Irma Thomas, and Tracy Nelson
We’re winding down on this week’s album, a great blues and R & B effort by three of the most accomplished musical stylists in music. On this album they sing individually and as a group. It’s a rare treat. Don’t miss it.
7:00 p.m. The All-Girl Revue Too: Various Artists
We turn the evening over to the ladies. In this second volume you’ll hear Carlene Carter, Bobbie Gentry, Aretha Franklin, Ann Peebles, Amy Winehouse, Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Christine McVie, Janis Ian, Mary Wells, Cilla Black, Kate & Anna McGarrigle, Shawn Colvin, Susan Tedeschi and more!

Good Morning, Musicologists! You know how we feel about the ladies of music here in The Mermaid Lounge, and today we have a special treat for you all.
We have some great blues for you today with three very special women…all of them part of our standard rotation
Here’s your Sunday Funday line-up:
11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Sing It! by Marcia Ball, Irma Thomas and Tracy Nelson NEW!
I’m really excited to offer this album up this week. I could write a review of this, but I actually found one that’s perfect from the Louisiana Music Factory site, so here it is:
“Why settle for one great female vocalist when you can get three, especially when they’re stylish soul diva Irma Thomas, Tracy “Mother Earth” Nelson, and swamp rocker (and roller) Marcia Ball. The talented trio take the Sing It! title seriously, belting all hues of blues with satisfying sass and sincerity. Backed by a fine and funky band of Memphis-soul stalwarts and New Orleans session stars, the ladies shine both individually and as a team. Thomas, the longtime “Soul Queen of New Orleans,” struts her stuff on the Bobby “Blue” Bland classic “Yield Not to Temptation,” while Ball puts some patented bayou boogie, powered by her slinky piano lines, into her spotlight songs. Nelson repeatedly stops the show with her enormous, wraparound voice, transforming tunes like “In Tears” from simple country-flavored ballads into cathartic emotional experiences. But it’s the combined voices that makes the session so special, and the title track, a soulfully scintillating second-line anthem, is the most enjoyable example of the vocal virtuosity of these women. It’s a quintessential New Orleans celebration of singing, well worth the purchase price by itself, and it, like the entire album, also serves as an excellent sampler of the multiple talents of the superb song stylists involved.”
3:00 p.m. Are You Ready for The Country: Various Artists
Don’t let the title fool you. It’s a great playlist combining real country and country rock legends. (That means no bad pop bands with fiddles, as Mr. Petty referred to them.) You’ll hear Waylon Jennings, Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, Neil Young, The Byrds, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Emmylou Harris, Gram Parsons, The Eagles, Guy Clark, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Asleep At The Wheel, The Band, Pure Prairie League, Jerry Jeff Walker and many more.
It’s Sunday, and that means a day of rest. Seriously. No stress here. No subscription required. No credit card number required. And no personal information requested. Evah. And did I mention we run 24/7 uninterrupted by commercials?
Good Morning, Reggaeologists (that’s a new one). Today brings us a great live performance by The Wailers, and some other great stuff.
Al Anderson, Bob Marley and Aston ‘Family Man’ Barrett of The Wailers perform on stage at the Odeon, Birmingham, United Kingdom, 18 July 1975. (Photo by Ian Dickson/Redferns)
Here’s today’s line-up:
11:00 a.m. Bob Marley & The Wailers Live at The Roxy, West Hollywood, CA May 26, 1976
Today we get some reggae on with The Legend himself, live from The Roxy. Marley was a pioneer in reggae music, fusing it with ska and rocksteady. He had his own distinctive singing and songwriting style.
3:00 p.m. Sam Cooke at The Harlem Square Club, Miami, Florida, January 12, 1963
Sam Cooke was a singer-songwriter who was one of the most influential soul artists of all time. He joined the Soul Stirrers as a vocalist in the early fifties, but went solo in 1957 and is responsible for a string of hits including A Change is Gonna’ Come, Bring It On Home To Me, Cupid, Twistin’ The Night Away, and Chain Gang. During his eight-year career, he released 29 singles that charted in Billboard’s Top 40, and 20 which charted in the Top 10 of Billboard’s Black Singles chart.
7:00 p.m. Badass Guitarists, Volume Two: Various Artists
As promised, we bring you volume two of this playlist tonight. In this volume, you’ll hear the handiwork of Albert Lee (The Hot Band), Duane Allman, Mike Campbell, George Harrison, Brian May, Andrew Gold, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, Taj Mahal, Neil Young, Jerry Garcia, John Fogerty, Dickie Betts, David Gilmour and more!
Get your musical shit together and tune us in, people. We’re free 24/7 with no commercial interruption, and we play the best music of all time.
Good Morning, Music Lovers across the planet! Here we are at another midweek. We have a lot of wide open stream today, but we have some great programming as well!
Today we have a brand new Spotlight, featuring The Neville Brothers
Here’s Wednesday’s line-up:
11:00 a.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of The Neville Brothers NEW!
This one has been on my list for a quite a long time and it’s finally here. I got to see these guys just one time during one of my business trips to New Orleans. They were live at Tipitinas, a great venue, by the way. Today we have them as a band, some of them solo, and we also have The Meters. Art Neville was the founder of both The Neville Brothers and The Meters. They are truly a magical, musical family.
7:00 p.m. Badass Guitarists, Volume One: Various Artists
Here we have some of the handiwork of some of music’s greatest on guitar. You’ll hear Dickie Betts, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Jeff Beck, Keith Richards, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Bonnie Raitt, Jimmy Page, Lowell George, Paul Barriere, Jimi Hendrix, Walter Becker, Mike Campbell, Joe Perry and more.
We’ll have Volume Two on Friday of this week, and we’re putting together Volume Three right now. So, if we’ve missed anyone, we’ll rectify that.
Once again, please give us a shot. We’re all about the music because this is a labor of love. We make no profit whatsoever. That is definitely not why we’re here.
