We have two house bands. The Beatles is one of those house bands. (Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers is the other.) This list is in no numerical order. It was done very scientifically, of course. Some Beatle fans (including me) sat around getting stoned and just threw out titles. If we agreed, we kept the song on the list. We scrubbed the ones we didn’t agree on. That’s about as scientific as we can get at this stage of the game. Some day when I am indeed fully retired, we’ll open this up to listeners by email and take votes. But for now, this is what you get. We like this list a lot.

I’m really excited to offer this album up this week. I could write a review of this, but I actually found one that’s perfect from the Louisiana Music Factory site, so here it is:
“Why settle for one great female vocalist when you can get three, especially when they’re stylish soul diva Irma Thomas, Tracy “Mother Earth” Nelson, and swamp rocker (and roller) Marcia Ball. The talented trio take the Sing It! title seriously, belting all hues of blues with satisfying sass and sincerity. Backed by a fine and funky band of Memphis-soul stalwarts and New Orleans session stars, the ladies shine both individually and as a team. Thomas, the longtime “Soul Queen of New Orleans,” struts her stuff on the Bobby “Blue” Bland classic “Yield Not to Temptation,” while Ball puts some patented bayou boogie, powered by her slinky piano lines, into her spotlight songs. Nelson repeatedly stops the show with her enormous, wraparound voice, transforming tunes like “In Tears” from simple country-flavored ballads into cathartic emotional experiences. But it’s the combined voices that makes the session so special, and the title track, a soulfully scintillating second-line anthem, is the most enjoyable example of the vocal virtuosity of these women. Today we get some reggae on with The Legend himself, live from The Roxy. Marley was a pioneer in reggae music, fusing it with ska and rocksteady. He had his own distinctive singing and songwriting style.
Sam Cooke was a singer-songwriter who was one of the most influential soul artists of all time. He joined the Soul Stirrers as a vocalist in the early fifties, but went solo in 1957 and is responsible for a string of hits including A Change is Gonna’ Come, Bring It On Home To Me, Cupid, Twistin’ The Night Away, and Chain Gang. During his eight-year career, he released 29 singles that charted in Billboard’s Top 40, and 20 which charted in the Top 10 of Billboard’s Black Singles chart.

This one has been on my list for a quite a long time and it’s finally here. I got to see these guys just one time during one of my business trips to New Orleans. They were live at Tipitinas, a great venue, by the way. Today we have them as a band, some of them solo, and we also have The Meters. Art Neville was the founder of both The Neville Brothers and The Meters. They are truly a magical, musical family.
Here we have some of the handiwork of some of music’s greatest on guitar. You’ll hear Dickie Betts, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Jeff Beck, Keith Richards, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Bonnie Raitt, Jimmy Page, Lowell George, Paul Barriere, Jimi Hendrix, Walter Becker, Mike Campbell, Joe Perry and more.
