This evening we have another great performance by Joni Mitchell live from Carnegie Hall. Joni is what we concert-goers called a double-edged sword during her touring days: Brilliant musician with a short temper on stage, very much like her male counterpart, Van Morrison. She has tempered with age.

We’re light on programming today and heavy on the Open Stream. After all, The Music Mermaid has to earn her keep here. We think she does a commendable job.

The second airing of our Album of The Week, one of Carly Simon’s biggest sellers and for good reason. It’s definitely our favorite Carly Simon album here at #BecomeUngovernable Radio.

7:00 p.m. Albert King & Stevie Ray Vaughan: In Session, December 6, 1983

A great session recorded live at CHCH-TV Studios in Ontario, Canada, when Stevie Ray Vaughan was 29 years old, and Albert King was in his sixtieth year. Two masters at work.

This playlist is actually Jakob Dylan with and without The Wallflowers, to be precise. But it’s good to know that they have just announced a new album together, the first in nine years. Bob’s boy, as you might guess, is no slouch.

This is another of our various artist playlists we haven’t aired for a while. It’s Our Monthly Visit With The British, and Carly Simon’s “Hotcakes” is Our Album of The Week, Sunday, April 11, 2021

Good Morning, Musicologists! It’s another fine Sunday here in The Mermaid Lounge (although, I confess that I am writing this earlier than usual). We have a new album of the week, and we feature our five-hour British Invasion playlist today.

Here’s today’s simple but satisfying line-up:

12:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Hotcakes by Carly Simon NEW!

Hotcakes was Carly Simon’s fourth studio album, released by Elektra Records in 1974. She recorded the album while she was pregnant with her first child, and I have to say that it’s one of the best albums on the planet. It is also one of the hottest-sellers of her career. Unfortunately for Carly, Elektra released two other albums that year, one was Planet Waves by Dylan and the other was Court & Spark by Joni Mitchell. That kept Hotcakes off the top spot. It peaked at number three.

The album generated two hits, Mockingbird, which she recorded with her then-husband James Taylor, and the other was Haven’t Got Time For The Pain. However, I have to agree with David Geffen’s assessment that Forever My Love was the finest song she ever recorded.

3:00 p.m. The British Are Coming! Various Artists

Once again, we give you more than five hours of great music from across the pond, from the British Invasion bands up through the mid eighties. You’ll hear The Clash, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Searchers, Lulu, The Dave Clark Five, Them (featuring Van Morrison), Electric Light Orchestra, The Kinks, Led Zeppelin, Cream, The Spencer Davis Group, The Who, and then some.

My fingers are tired, so I’m not going into all the detail about how you should be listening to us. You know, we’re totally free, ask no personal information, take no advertising, no commercial interruptions…all that shit. Just do it.

I did not catch this particular show, but I had the pleasure of seeing Warren Zevon live at The Berklee Performance Center around the same time. His plane was late, the show started two hours late, but he was on his game. Truly one of the most tortured souls on the planet, but one amazingly talented guy and a hell of a singer-songwriter.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Saturate Before Using by Jackson Browne FINAL AIRING!

The final airing of this great album is at 3:00 p.m. today. Tomorrow when you roll out of bed, there will be a brand new selection gracing the front page of the blog.

7:00 p.m. The Beatles: The Complete Apple Rooftop Concert, January 30, 1969

For 42 glorious minutes, The Beatles thrilled the lunchtime crowd with an impromptu concert on the rooftop of Apple headquarters at 3 Saville Row before the Metropolitan Police shut them down for excessive noise. Billy Preston joined them on keyboards.

I used to listen to the King Biscuit show religiously. It was nationally syndicated and we had a few great radio stations here in Boston back in the day. That’s when radio was radio, people. Now it’s an enterprise. This particular broadcast is a bootleg of a 1976 concert by The Band at The Carter Baron Amphitheatre in Washington, D.C. We hope you enjoy it.

6:00 p.m. The Doors Live at Cobo Arena, Detroit, Michigan, May 8, 1970

The Doors were together for only four years before Jim Morrison’s untimely death in 1970, but they left behind a musical imprint that will not be forgotten.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Saturate Before Using by Jackson Browne NEW!

Funny factoid: The album is mistakenly called Saturate Before Using because the cover design was made to look like a water bag. It was intended to be Jackson Browne. At the time of its recording Jackson did not have a record contract, then he sent a recording of Jamaica Say You Will to David Geffen and he began hunting. He started his own record label, Asylum, and signed Browne to a contract (along with many others, including Linda Ronstadt). This brilliant album is Browne’s debut, and birthed two hit singles, Doctor My Eyes and Rock Me On The Water. Jackson Browne is now considered one of the legendary singer-songwriters of his generation, residing in both the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

3:00 p.m. The Sixties Rotation, Volume One: Various Artists

Yes, there is a difference between volume one and volume two. This volume focuses more on the earlier part of the sixties, although there is some crossover on both and we won’t deny that. It was done purposely.
