It’s Our Monthly Visit With The British, and Carly Simon’s “Hotcakes” is Our Album of The Week, Sunday, April 11, 2021

Good Morning, Musicologists! It’s another fine Sunday here in The Mermaid Lounge (although, I confess that I am writing this earlier than usual). We have a new album of the week, and we feature our five-hour British Invasion playlist today.

Here’s today’s simple but satisfying line-up:

12:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Hotcakes by Carly Simon NEW!

Hotcakes was Carly Simon’s fourth studio album, released by Elektra Records in 1974. She recorded the album while she was pregnant with her first child, and I have to say that it’s one of the best albums on the planet. It is also one of the hottest-sellers of her career. Unfortunately for Carly, Elektra released two other albums that year, one was Planet Waves by Dylan and the other was Court & Spark by Joni Mitchell. That kept Hotcakes off the top spot. It peaked at number three.

The album generated two hits, Mockingbird, which she recorded with her then-husband James Taylor, and the other was Haven’t Got Time For The Pain. However, I have to agree with David Geffen’s assessment that Forever My Love was the finest song she ever recorded.

3:00 p.m. The British Are Coming! Various Artists

Once again, we give you more than five hours of great music from across the pond, from the British Invasion bands up through the mid eighties. You’ll hear The Clash, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Searchers, Lulu, The Dave Clark Five, Them (featuring Van Morrison), Electric Light Orchestra, The Kinks, Led Zeppelin, Cream, The Spencer Davis Group, The Who, and then some.

My fingers are tired, so I’m not going into all the detail about how you should be listening to us. You know, we’re totally free, ask no personal information, take no advertising, no commercial interruptions…all that shit. Just do it.

It’s Sunday in The Lounge and Jackson Browne Owns Our Album of The Week. We Also Offer Up Volume 1 of Our Sixties Rotation, April 4, 2021

Good Morning, Musicologists! For those who celebrate, Happy Easter. I generally do because it’s a time when I can be with my family, and that’s what matters. It’s cultural with our family. But it is not a requirement to listen to great music!

We have five hours of uninterrupted Sixties Music today with Volume One!

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Saturate Before Using by Jackson Browne NEW!

Funny factoid: The album is mistakenly called Saturate Before Using because the cover design was made to look like a water bag. It was intended to be Jackson Browne. At the time of its recording Jackson did not have a record contract, then he sent a recording of Jamaica Say You Will to David Geffen and he began hunting. He started his own record label, Asylum, and signed Browne to a contract (along with many others, including Linda Ronstadt). This brilliant album is Browne’s debut, and birthed two hit singles, Doctor My Eyes and Rock Me On The Water. Jackson Browne is now considered one of the legendary singer-songwriters of his generation, residing in both the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

3:00 p.m. The Sixties Rotation, Volume One: Various Artists

Yes, there is a difference between volume one and volume two. This volume focuses more on the earlier part of the sixties, although there is some crossover on both and we won’t deny that. It was done purposely. On this volume you’ll hear The Beatles, Mary Wells, Del Shannon, The Searchers, Carole King, Harry Nilsson, The Dave Clark Five, Johnny Rivers, The Box Tops, Dusty Springfield, The Yardbirds, Blues Image, Jimmy Ruffin, The Supremes, The Four Tops, Marvin Gaye & Kim Weston, Simon & Garfunkel and many more. A total of 98 songs uninterrupted.

The Easter Bunny just phoned me. He’s tuning in himself today now that he’s delivered all the shit required of him. He hopes you will too.

Steve Winwood In the Spotlight, Absolutely The Animals, and Volume 3 of Our Summer of Love Series Kicks Off The Week, Monday, March 29, 2021

Good Morning, Gang! We kick off the week with some excellent music that we’ve not circulated in a while, including the third volume of our Summer of Love Series.

We kick the week off by putting the legendary Steve Winwood In the Spotlight!

We’ve got the full magilla here, featuring Winwood’s solo career, as well as his time with Blind Faith, Traffic, and the Spencer Davis Group. This is a really excellent playlist that is not to be missed!

3:00 p.m. Deb’s Stream: Absolutely The Animals

This is one band that should not ever be forgotten. Formed in the early sixties in Newcastle upon Tyne, the band is considered a British R & B band, but they managed to toss in plenty of rock and psychedelic music as well. They moved to London in 1964 after hitting the big time. Eric Burdon is one badass vocalist.

7:00 p.m. The Summer of Love, Volume 3: Various Artists

We took a day off from this series yesterday, but we bring it back to close it out today. It features Vanilla Fudge, Lulu, Wilson Pickett, The Association, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, The Doors, The Beatles, The Bee Gees, Donovan, Jackie Wilson, The Youngbloods and more!

Saturday Puts The Amazing Voice of Valerie Carter In the Spotlight, Gives Us The Summer of Love 2, Our Usual ‘Live Dead” and The Final Airing of “Let It Be…Naked,” March 27, 2021

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Let It Be…Naked by The Beatles FINAL AIRING!

Tune it in because tomorrow it’s gone. The Beatles’ Let It Be the way it was originally intended to be heard was finally released in 2004 under the guidance of Paul McCartney.

We heard the first volume yesterday. Today we give you the second volume in all of its historical glory, including Manfred Mann, The Grass Roots, The Lovin’ Spoonful, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Jefferson Airplane, Bobbie Gentry, The Queen of Soul (that would be Aretha), The Byrds, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Spencer Davis Group, and more!

Little Feat Live in Boston, Volume One of Our Summer of Love Playlist, and a Lot of Open Stream, Friday, March 26, 2021

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Let It Be…Naked by The Beatles NEW!

To be sure, Phil Spector was a musical genius, having developed the ‘wall of sound’ used by so many performers. I like the wall of sound enough, but probably not as much as others, I have to confess. The Beatles were on the outs when they recorded Let It Be, and mostly they were not in the studio together during time. Phil Spector produced this album and, rumor has it, that John Lennon brought him the tapes when he was pissed off. The first release of this album was with the wall of souond. Along came Paul McCartney in 2004, convinced that the original release was not what was originally envisioned for the album. The result is this stripped down version, and I tend to concur with McCartney here.

2:00 p.m. Ladies Day Out: Various Artists NEW!

Women’s music is nothing new to us, but we’ve never had a long-running women’s playlist until this day. Now, we do. Women continue to get the short end of the stick when it comes to rock music. Hell, that infamous pay-to-play radio conglomerate (whose name we shall not mention) offers quite a few individual stations dedicated to the men of rock, but not one single station dedicated to women. In fact, if you tune in any classic rock station, you almost never hear women played at all. But here, you do.

This playlist features many women. We have Bonnie Raitt, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, Cilla Black, Carla Thomas, Ann Peebles, Aretha Franklin, Sheryl Crow, Petula Clark, Nicolette Larson, Wendy Waldman, Phoebe Snow, Norah Jones, and many others. Check out the Playlist section of this blog for a complete set list. All you need to do is scroll to the bottom! It should be up on the blog by noon.

This would be an excellent day to tune us in unless, of course, you’re one of those guys who just can’t bear the thought of women in the musical spotlight for an extended period. This would not be your day.

Good Morning, Musicologists. This is one of my favorite days here in The Mermaid Lounge because the Sixties are back once again with all the great music that goes with it.

Bob Dylan never ceases to amaze.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Rough and Rowdy Ways by Bob Dylan NEW!

Bob Dylan released his 39th album a bit earlier this year at the age of 79. The man never ceases to amaze. He has been at this for nearly 60 years, and he remains as in touch with the world around him now as he was when he was young. I include this review because it says it all perfectly, and prevents me from writing a tome here.

This is, without a doubt, my favorite playlist (along with Volume One, which we aired last time around.
