10:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Dusty in Memphis by Dusty Springfield

This was the first time Dusty Springfield brought her unique R & B style together with the Memphis sound. It sold poorly when it was released in 1969, but as Springfield’s music became known and her legend grew, things changed. Later, it would be acclaimed by critics as one of the most important popular music albums ever made. It also spawned Son of A Preacher Man, Springfield’s “signature” song and her great version of Windmills Of Your Mind.

Take a trip down memory lane to the present with one of the original “protest” musical genres, FOLK. Earlier during Tom Petty month we played the recordings of the Heartbreakers’ legendary 20-might residency at the Fillmore West from 1997. Tonight, we close out another Tom Petty Month here in The Mermaid Lounge with recordings from the band’s 1999 residency at The Fillmore.

We’ve got a tour where Petty and his mates were not necessarily the headliners, but that didn’t seem to matter to either them or the audience. This is where the seeds were planted for a great musical match and where Mike Campbell said that the band truly learned how to improvise on stage. He credited Dylan with that lesson. This is one of those “don’t miss” moments.

I personally have a love-hate relationship with EJ, preferring his earlier works to the stuff he made later in his career. When you begin a long-term run in Vegas, you know it’s time to hang them up. I continue to believe this is one of Elton John’s finest albums, if not his absolute best. I have liked various songs here and there since the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album, but nothing has knocked my socks off since then. Regardless, this album belongs on our Album of The Week radar without a doubt.

Serendipity has once again found its way into my off-the-cuff programming and given us an All-British Sunday. That can only mean good things. Another one from the vault from the world’s ultimate road jam band. This one’s from the Cape Cod Coliseum, a venue which many claims feels like it’s “in the middle of nowhere.” Funny, I don’t remember that. Then again, I don’t remember a lot about my trips to the Cape Cod Coliseum, to be honest.

Great day to tune us in, as always. I know I say that every day, but I also mean it every day. Hey, look, where else do you get to try something out for free. In my experience, new “experiences” always seem to require a credit card with the caveat that you can cancel at any time. Well, that’s not the way we do business around here. Full Moon Fever was Tom Petty’s very first solo effort, released April 24, 1989 on MCA. It was produced by Petty, Mike Campbell, and Jeff Lynne. In addition to Lynne, other members of the Wilburys also contributed, including George Harrison and Roy Orbison. It was recorded in Campbell’s garage studio, and was actually interrupted mid-stream for the recording of the Traveling Wilbury’s first album.

Full Moon Fever was both a critical and commercial success. Five singles were released: I Won’t Back Down, Runnin’ Down A Dream, Free Fallin’, A Face In The Crowd, and Yer So Bad. It peaked at No. 3 on the U.S. Billboard 200 and No. 8 in the UK. It was certified 5x platinum in the U.S. on October 5, 2000 and 6x platinum in Canada on September 18, 1991 in Canada. In 2019, the album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
