Monday Brings You Santana In the Spotlight, Hot Tuna ‘Live’ at The Fillmore, and The All-Girl Revue, Volume Five, on January 2, 2023

Good morning Latin rock lovers and musicologists alike! Today we give Santana its due by putting Carlos Santana and his great band In the Spotlight. We also give you some ‘live’ Hot Tuna and the Women wrap up the programming later.

11:00 a.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Santana NEW!

Guitar great Carlos Santana started his band in San Francisco back in 1966. They appeared for the first time at Woodstock in 1969. Santana has stood the test of time, but with many different lineups over the years. The one constant has been Carlos Santana. He recently reunited the original band on the road. We finally give Carlos Santana and his band the spotlight it deserves.

3:00 p.m. Hot Tuna Live at The Fillmore West, San Francisco, CA, March 4, 1988

This great blues-rock band was formed in 1969 by Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady, former members of the Jefferson Airplane. Like Santana, they’ve had many musical lineups over the yeard, but Kaukonen and Casady have remained the band’s centerpieces. Today we have them live from The Fillmore.

7:00 p.m. The All-Girl Revue Five, Various Artists

We close out the evening’s programming with the women of music. I keep typing the ‘women of rock’ but that would be inaccurate because these female-based playlists offer such a diverse array of styles. The third and final installment as we roll out the brand new Heartbreakers’ compendium of their legendary 20-night residency as The Fillmore House Band. They threw away the script and kicked ass, and every one of them felt it was the most creative opportunity the band had, and the highlight of their time together. For the first time ever, there are more cover songs on a Heartbreakers album than original compositions. That was by design as they chose to pay homage to those artists who inspired them. They are, in our humble opinion, the best cover band on the planet.

7:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Dan Fogelberg NEW!

It’s time to flip the switch to a new featured singer-songwriter, and Dan Fogelberg is one of the most underappreciated. Except here in The Mermaid Lounge, where we made him one of the very first artists to have a ‘Spotlight.’ Today he starts a week in the spotlight as our featured singer-songwriter.

Tonight we bit a fond farewell to one of our favorite albums and bands as we close out this week’s featured album. We’ll be back tomorrow with a brand new selection.

Warren Zevon gets the stage for the second time as this week’s featured Singer-Songwriter in our series. Linda Ronstadt recognized his immense songwriting talents by recording Carmelita and Poor Poor Pitiful Me, Hasten Down The Wind and Mohammed’s Radio. (I love them all but I think Mohammed’s Radio is brilliant.) Warren Zevon also had a great solo career, starting off with his breakthrough album, Excitable Boy, one of our all-time favorites. Tune him in.

Yeah, after today, we’re on the downslide to the weekend and everything gets better from here. Before, in between, and after we have The Music Mermaid at the helm. She has impeccable taste in music, as you well know by now.

Once upon a time, three of the most talented women on the planet decided to get together and make a couple of albums. They just blew everyone away with this project. They called themselves Trio. Today, we have the entire sessions surrounding this event, including alternate versions, outtakes, and other assorted gems. This is one you don’t want to miss!

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Rumors by Fleetwood Mac

No doubt this album was biographical and referenced the personal situations going on with the members of Fleetwood Mac, hence the title. It was also one of the best pop-rock albums ever made.

She began that climb to the top in 1975 and was the Queen of Rock during the seventies, gracing the covers of Rolling Stone (more than once), Time, Newsweek, Cashbox, Circus, Creem and others. 11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: I Got Dem Ol’ Kozmic Blues Again Mama by Janis Joplin NEW!

Janis gets a spin for this week with her very first and only solo album released during her lifetime on September 11, 1969. This is the album she recorded right after leaving Big Brother & The Holding Company. She enlisted Sam Andrews, guitarist for Big Brother, to help with the project, as well as the Kozmic Blues Band. She also added a brass and horn section, something Big Brother would not allow when she was with them. This album was a departure from her psychedelic rock days as it was much more R & B- and blues-driven. This is the expanded 1999 release with ‘live’ tunes from Woodstock included and with a cover of Dylan’s Dear Landlord, with some new lyrics and a new arrangement by Joplin.

We certainly have already featured Revolver here once at our early stages of life, but this version is the newly remixed version by Giles Martin, son of the man known as The Fifth Beatle, the late Sir George Martin. This is part of the new 5-CD set that we recently got our hands on, released yesterday. We will be featuring this music as part of our general rotation and we will be playing the rest of the material on it as programmed sessions throughout the next several weeks. The package takes you on a musical journey through the making of what is often considered The Beatles most significant album.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Their Satanic Majesties Request NEW!

Here we have The Rolling Stones with their 6th British and 8th American studio album released by Decca Records in December of 1967. The band moved away from its R & B roots and experimented with psychedelic sounds and instruments (Mellotron, sound effects, African rhythms, among others) and produced the album themselves. It too a while as their production was interrupted by drug use, court appearances and jail terms by members of the group. They managed, however, to make a very different album but still sound like The Rolling Stones.

This EP and the Album of The Week managed to just fall together nicely today as we present our long-player of mind-altering substances. Next to love and heartbreak, substance use was probably the favorite topic for music. Some of it was legal; a lot of it not. Without a doubt, a Mermaid Lounge favorite, but with Lowell George at the helm. Do I think they were good post-George? Yes. But the notion that there’s a Little Feat without Lowell George is the same for me as the Grateful Dead without Jerry Garcia or The Heartbreakers without Tom Petty.
