We’re Down In New Orleans All Day on Monday with Our EP, Allen Toussaint, and Live Magnolia Sisters, January 27, 2025

Good morning, musicologists! Technically speaking, Mardi Gras season started on January 6 (twelfth night) and the party goes all the way to March 4, which is Mardi Gras Day! So, today we start the musical celebration with an EP we haven’t aired for a while!

Here’s your musical lineup!

10:00 a.m. Down in New Orleans: Various Artists

We’ve got a great playlist here that features not only authentic New Orleans musical genres (a little jazz, cajun/zydeco, etc) but also features artists born and sometimes raised there, including BeauSoleil, Clifton Chenier, Allen Toussaint, Dr. John, Buckwheat Zydeco, Tony Joe White, Lucinda Williams, Fats Domino, Professor Longhair, Irma Thomas (the Soul Queen of New Orleans), The Boogaloo Swamis, The Neville Brothers, The Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Queen Ida & The Bon Temps Zydeco Band, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Daywalkers and more!

4:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Allen Toussaint

Toussaint was a musician, songwriter, arranger and producer who was one of the most influential figures in New Orleans R & B from the 1950’s to the end of the century. Today, he’s in our spotlight.

8:00 p.m. The Magnolia Sisters Live at The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, The Fairgrounds Race Course, New Orleans, LA, July 27, 2021

This is a real treat: An all-woman band from southwest Louisiana that plays many styles of Cajun French music. It’s essentially five women, unrelated by birth, who simply share the love of Cajun music. The band was founded by Ann Savoy (who also made an album with Linda Ronstadt; they called themselves The ZoZo Sisters) and Jane Vidrine back in 1995.

Today is a wondrous day here in The Mermaid Lounge and we do hope you’ll join us for this great New Orleans experience! Remember, before, in between and after we give you our big, wide Open Stream. The button is below!

On Saturday We’ve Got Songs About Colors, Live Linda Ronstadt, and an I-Three ‘Spotlight’ Feature, January 18, 2025

Welcome, Weekenders! We’ve made it to Saturday and we have songs about colors. After that, the focus turns to some very talented women.

Here’s your musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. Color My World: Various Artists

Whoever thought there’d be five hours worth of songs about colors. In fact, this EP could have gone on longer. You’ll hear from The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, James Taylor, Donovan, Booker T & The MGs, Electric Light Orchestra, Procol Harum, Joni Mitchell, The Who, Amy Winehouse, Sam & Dave, Badfinger, Bob Dylan, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Elvis Costello, Neil Young, Jefferson Airplane, The Hollies, Elvis Presley, Janis Joplin, Cream, Marvin Gaye, Linda Ronstadt, John Hiatt, Lucinda Williams, J.D. Souther and more!

4:00 p.m. Linda Ronstadt Live at The Greek Theatre, Los Angeles, CA, August 24, 1980

The undisputed Queen of Rock drops by The Mermaid Lounge this afternoon for a live performance. I’ve seen Ronstadt 40 times in my lifetime, and she never disappointed once.

8:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of The I-Threes

I’m sure some people will be scratching their heads and asking who these ladies are. These are the women who helped to uplift Bob Marley’s music by providing amazing background vocals, but they are so much more accomplished than that. They are literal legends in the Reggae music world. You can learn about them here if you’re interested and, better still, drop by The Lounge tonight and see for yourself.

We begin the weekend once again, and the living is easy here in The Mermaid Lounge. I’ll be finishing up my final day in hardware hell, but The Music Mermaid is here to take care of running things. The button is below.

We Intro The Liverbirds, Then It’s ‘Ladies Day Out’ and a Judy Collins ‘Spotlight’ on Sunday, December 29, 2024

Good morning, music historians. We’re sure you’ve never heard about The Liverbirds, a band referred to as ‘the all-girl Beatles’ who came from Liverpool and graced the music scene from 1963 to 1968. We’ve got them today, as well as all-girl programming!

Here’s your all-girl lineup:

Was there an all-girl band before the Liverbirds from, where else, Liverpool, England? We’re not sure. They were on the music scene from 1963 through 1968 and are referred to as ‘the all-girl Beatles’. We have a link from Wikipedia in the opening paragraph of this blog entry, but here’s some additional information on this band.

12:00 p.m. Ladies Day Out: Various Artists

Nobody plays female artists like we do, and this is a great playlist including Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Carly Simon, Emmylou Harris, Petula Clark, Laura Nyro, Cilla Black, Irma Thomas, Aretha Franklin, Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Etta James, Janis Joplin, Carole King, Maria Muldaur, Lucinda Williams, Rosanne Cash, Eva Cassidy, Wendy Waldman, Shawn Colvin, The Ronettes, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Norah Jones, Phoebe Snow, Nicolette Larson, Susan Tedeschi, Valerie Carter, Dusty Springfield, Ann Peebles and more!

8:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Judy Collins

We close out the programming with a woman whose career has spanned seven decades, releasing 36 albums and six live albums.

We love days when all of the programming centers around women. We play more women in a week than most stations play in a month. We’re on 24/7 with no commercial advertising. We’re all about the music. The button is below.

We Close Out the Month With All-Girl Programming: Our ‘Ladies Day Out’ EP, Joni Mitchell and Linda Ronstadt on Saturday, November 30, 2024

Here’s your musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. Ladies Day Out: Various Artists

We start with five hours of uninterrupted music from the ladies, including Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Carly Simon, Petula Clark, Emmylou Harris, Laura Nyro, Cilla Black, Irma Thomas, Aretha Franklin, Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Etta James, Janis Joplin, Carole King, Maria Muldaur, Lucinda Williams, Rosanne Cash, Eva Cassidy, Wendy Waldman, Shawn Colvin, The Ronettes, The Supremes, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Phoebe Snow, Nicolette Larson, Susan Tedeschi, Sheryl Crow, Valerie Carter, Dolly Parton and more!

8:00 p.m. Linda Ronstadt Live at Television Center Studios, Hollywood, CA, April 24, 1980

Linda Ronstadt was recorded live in Hollywood back in 1980 for what would become the only live album she’d ever release. We’ve got it for you tonight.

We’re here 24/7 and we’re completely free. No strings. No lie. And best of all, there’s absolutely no advertising. The button is below.

We Close The Month With ‘Ladies Day Out’, Steve Winwood, and Live Lucinda Williams, on Thursday, October 31, 2024

Here’s your musical lineup:

We’re Weekenders! We’ve Got ‘Color My World,’ Paul Simon and Queen On Tap! It’s Saturday, October 19, 2024

Woke up this morning to a headline that Salem, Massachusetts has had 666K visitors so far this Halloween, a record number. I hope there are more coming. 666 is not a good number to be floating around on Halloweek. IYKYK. But we’re safe here in The Lounge!

Here’s your Saturday music:

9:00 a.m. Color My World: Various Artists

Songs that include colors in the title, lyrics or both from the above pictured along with The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Donovan, Booker T & The MGs, Donovan, Electric Light Orchestra, Procol Harum, The Who, Amy Winehouse, Sam & Dave, Badfinger, Bob Dylan, Fleetwood Mac, Elvis Costello, Neil Young, Jefferson Airplane, The Hollies, Elvis Presley, Janis Joplin, Cream, Marvin Gaye, Lucinda Williams and more!

We play plenty of Paul Simon, but this is the first live performance we’ve aired. It will be one of as many as we can find (and we have more already in waiting).

8:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Queen

Here’s something we don’t play a lot of: Arena Rock, Glam Rock. Not our favorite genre here in The Lounge, but Queen is a bit different. They’ve made more good than bad, but we like early Queen and the days of Keep Yourself Alive and Killer Queen as opposed to what they later morphed into.

We’ve finally made it to the weekend. Not going to lie, going back to hardware hell after nine glorious days of vacation was more than tough, but it had to be done. We’re here and we’re totally free. And there’s no commercial advertising. The button is below.

On Monday It’s Live Warren Zevon, the ‘Ladies Day Out’ EP and a Jackson Browne Spotlight, September 30, 2024

Good morning, musicologists! We close out another month in fine style, putting the ladies of music in charge for a large part of the day. Around that, we’ve got Warren Zevon and Jackson Browne.

Here’s your Monday, Monday lineup:

We’ve got some new live Warren Zevon to spring on you today in a show from the home of the RRHOF! It’s a good one.

1:00 p.m. Ladies Day Out: Various Artists

The ladies are large and in charge for the afternoon hours with Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Carly Simon, Emmylou Harris, Petula Clark, Laura Nyro, Cilla Black, Irma Thomas, Aretha Franklin, Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Etta James, Janis Joplin, Carole King, Maria Muldaur, Lucinda Williams, Rosanne Cash, Eva Cassidy, Wendy Waldman, The Ronettes, Shawn Colvin, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Valerie Carter, Norah Jones, Phoebe Snow, Susan Tedeschi, Sheryl Crow, Dusty Springfield, Dolly Parton and more!

8:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Jackson Browne

We close out the programming with a Jackson Browne Spotlight that hits the spot. The man is a legend.

We’re here 24/7 at no charge to the listening public. No surprises. No strings. Nothing. Just music all day and all night. The button is below, so what are you waiting for?

It’s Thursday. We’re almost there. Tune us in. We’re on 24/7 and we doubt very seriously that you’ll ever hear a repeat in a day. We’re also totally free with absolutely no commercial interruption. The button is below.

It’s Sunday Funday With Live Bonnie Raitt, an Etta James Spotlight, and the ‘Color My World’ EP Tonight, August 18, 2024

Good morning, weekenders! We hope you’re enjoying your time off as much as we are, although my weekend is actually a Sunday-Monday combo. Today we start off with Bonnie Raitt and Etta James before we get into Open Stream with a theme this evening.

Here’s your Sunday Funday lineup:

10:00 a.m. Bonnie Raitt Live at The Troubadour, Los Angeles, CA, February 15, 1972

We kick off the festivities with an iconic performer in an iconic venue. There have been so many who have passed through the doors of The Troubadour on their way to fame. Bonnie Raitt is no exception.

2:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Etta James

In my mind, Etta James is a contemporary of Aretha Franklin in so many ways. Over a six-decade career she has put her stamp on gospel, soul, jazz, R&B and rock and roll. Today she’s In The Spotlight.

5:00 p.m. Color My World: Various Artists

Tonight we give you Open Stream with a Theme as this playlist takes you late into the night. You’ll hear The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, James Taylor, Donovan, Booker T & The MG’s, Electric Light Orchestra, Procol Harum, Joni Mitchell, The Who, Amy Winehouse, Sam & Dave, Badfinger, Bob Dylan, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, Elvis Costello, Neil Young, Jefferson Airplane, The Hollies, Elvis Presley, Lucinda Williams, Janis Joplin, John Hiatt, J.D. Souther, Linda Ronstadt and more!
