We’re in the Wayback Machine Heading for the Sixties, and We’ve Got Jackson Browne’s AOW, Thursday, January 25, 2024

Good morning, time travelers. We’re headed back to the early sixties today with ‘The Original Sixties Rotation’ EP, and we’ve also got some rare ‘live’ Hendrix.

Here’s your musical lineup:

9:00 a.m.  The Original Sixties Rotation: Various Artists

Personally speaking, the sixties and early seventies were the best of times in music. It is why I started the station to begin with. This EP features Del Shannon, Little Eva, The Drifters, The Beatles, Gerry & The Pacemakers, The Hollies, The Walker Brothers, Mary Wells, Dusty Springfield, The Searchers, The Monkees, Sonny & Cher, Petula Clark, Glen Campbell, Johnny Rivers, The Dave Clark Five, The Supremes, Harry Nilsson, The Band, The Yardbirds, The Kinks, Simon & Garfunkel, Blind Faith, Janis Joplin, Chuck Berry, The Temptations, Elvis Presley, Marvin Gaye, The Who, Bob Dylan, Tony Joe White, Barry McGuire, Fats Domino and more!

4:00 p.m.  Album of The Week: Late For The Sky by Jackson Browne

Jackson Browne’s Late For The Sky, his third studio album, is the first album in our ‘Happy 50th Birthday’ series of albums to open up the new year.

Yes, there’s no venue in the title because this show was held on a farm on the lower slope of the Haleakala volcano on a makeshift stage. The only audience were a few hundred Maui residents who heard the show was happening and showed up. These folks got to see a rare, little-known Hendrix performance. There’s a long story behind how this show came about and why it was so “secret” to begin with. It’s explained here much better than I could ever manage.

We’re at Midweek With ‘The British Are Coming’, Kris Kristofferson, and Elvis’ Sun Sessions, Wednesday, January 10, 2024

Good morning, music lovers! We’ve got quite an eclectic lineup today as we belatedly celebrate Elvis Presley’s birthday!

Here’s your midweek lineup:

9:00 a.m.  The British Are Coming: Various Artists

Yes, while Britain was falling in love with American rock and roll, we were digging The British Invasion over here, and we play it for you today with The Beatles, The Who, Dave Mason, The Kinks, The Rolling Stones, Cilla Black, Petula Clark, Lulu, The Searchers, The Hollies, Electric Light Orchestra, the Dave Clark Five, Small Faces, Led Zeppelin, Queen, The Moody Blues, Rod Stewart, Them, Herman’s Hermits, Gerry & The Pacemakers, Badfinger, The Yardbirds, Cream, Yes, Traffic, Elton John, The Animals, Manfred Mann’s Earth Band, The Spencer Davis Group, Donovan and more!

4:00 p.m.  Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Kris Kristofferson

Mr. Kristofferson is back this afternoon as our featured singer-songwriter.

8:00 p.m.  Elvis Presley: The Complete Sun Sessions

We celebrate Elvis’ birthday just a couple of days late, but with what we believe is the absolute best of Elvis…his early stuff recorded in 1954-1955 at Sun Studios in Memphis. My favorite Elvis song? Mystery Train.

Come on, people. We are here 24/7 at no charge to you. We don’t track you. We don’t require a credit card. All you need is a computer tab and the button right below this post.

The British Invasion is Back, So is Maria Muldaur. And Happy Birthday, Little Richard, Thursday, December 7, 2023

Here’s your musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. The British Are Coming: Various Artists

I made reference to The British Invasion in the opening, but this playlist goes beyond that. You’ll hear The Beatles, The Who, Dave Mason, Electric Light Orchestra, Petula Clark, The Zombies, The Hollies, Dusty Springfield, Small Faces, Led Zeppelin, Queen, The Kinks, Dave Clark Five, Bee Gees, Moody Blues, Rod Stewart, George Harrison, Them, Herman’s Hermits, Gerry & The Pacemakers, Badfinger, The Yardbirds, Traffic, Elton John, Lulu, Pink Floyd, Yes, The Animals, Manfred Mann’s Earth Band, Spencer Davis Group, Cream, The Rolling Stones, Donovan, The Searchers and more!

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Richland Woman Blues by Maria Muldaur

Maria Muldaur is another of those female singers of the sixties and seventies who refused to be pigeon-holed into one style of music. She drops by today with a great blues album with help from Bonnie Raitt, John Sebastian and others.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Little Richard HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Today we celebrate the birthday of one of the founders of rock and roll, Little Richard, who influenced so many of the British artists you’ll hear in today’s EP (including The Beatles and The Rolling Stones).

Well, kids, it’s another day of great music here in The Mermaid Lounge and we think you should take full advantage of it. We’re on 24/7 and we’re totally free of charge. Get on it!

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Rockstar by Dolly Parton FINAL AIRING!

This is the final airing of Dolly’s great rock opus, in response to her induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. However, don’t fret. It is party of our standard rotation now.

Every time we play Fats, I ask the same question: Was anybody singing rock n’ roll before Fats? I’m not sure. For absolute sure, Fats Domino was a true pioneer of the genre…one of the forefathers who made it happen. Today, along with his long-time collaborator, Dave Bartholomew, Fats is our featured singer-songwriter.

Recorded for Rockpalast, this is a fine live performance by the gang. The Heartbreakers were always a great ‘road’ band. Next time we fulfill the duties of Tom Petty Month, you’ll see that they are the planet’s best cover band as well.

Let’s get on it. It’s Tom Petty Month! Granted we have toned it down from the first two years, but we’ve got some great stuff planned and it’s still early in the month! We’re on 24/7 and we’re totally free of charge to all. No advertising either. See for yourself.

Right there behind The Traveling Wilburys on my Supergroup Meter, although quite dysfunctional compared to The Wilburys. They are the original drama llamas of music, but that didn’t stop them from making some of the best stuff on the planet.

We’ve passed the midweek point now. It’s all downhill to the weekend from here. This is your opportunity to get there in style. We’re on 24/7 at no charge and turning on the tunes is hassle-free. Just push play.
