Irma Thomas was a contemporary of Aretha Franklin, but she never achieved the national spotlight like Aretha did. Sometimes it’s just the luck of the draw, because Irma Thomas is one hell of a soul and R & B singer, and is known as the Soul Queen of New Orleans. We turn our spotlight on her this evening. Give her a listen.

Good morning, music lovers. This is a special day here in The Mermaid Lounge as we feature the first non-rock n’ roll album by Linda Ronstadt with Canciones di Mi Padre, the largest selling non-English-speaking album in music history.

Here’s today’s musical lineup:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Canciones di Mi Padre by Linda Ronstadt NEW!

From the start, Linda Ronstadt was fully in control of her career, an unusual situation in the male-dominated rock world. By the the time she got around to making Canciones di Mi Padre, she had made her record label millions of dollars and was unafraid to take a stand about recording the songs that filled her childhood. People warned her that her career would tank if she made this album, but she paid no mind. From it’s release in late 1987, it was a worldwide smash. It sold 2.5 million copies in the U.S alone, making it the biggest selling non-English language album in American recording history. By 2012, it had sold more than 10 million copies worldwide. Ronstadt also won the Best Mexican/Mexican-American Album at the 31st Grammy Awards. Las Canciones de mi Padre also is the only recording production that used the 3 best Mariachi bands in the world: Mariachi Vargas, Mariachi Los Camperos and Mariachi Los Galleros de Pedro Rey. In 2021, the album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame; in 2022 it was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Recording Registry.

Eva Cassidy was robbed of her future just two years after this performance when she passed away from cancer, but she left an awful lot of great music behind for us to enjoy. Luckily we’ve managed to find a some live performances to bring you over the past several years. Like many others, I never heard her before her death. If you’ve never heard Eva sing before, this would be a great night to introduce yourself to her talent.

This is the second airing of Bobbie Gentry as our featured singer-songwriter. She never wanted the limelight. She truly just wanted to write songs for others to sing. But it didn’t work out that way as she charted 11 singles. In the late seventies, she decided she didn’t want to be found and retired from the business. But she left an incredible musical legacy behind.

8:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Ann Peebles NEW!

To be perfectly honest, I never heard about Ann Peebles until I started listening to Tom Petty’s Buried Treasure show on Sirius. You can learn a lot about music history when Petty is the DJ. In fact, some people say his station could be a course in popular music history. Ann Peebles is a R & B and soul singer who became famous in the late seventies for her Memphis soul albums. She is also the composer of the R & B great I Can’t Stand The Rain (which she wrote with her husband Don Bryant and radio broadcaster Bernie Miller). Give her a listen. She’s fantastic.

This is a great multi-artist album featuring the music of singer-songwriter Townes Van Zandt, who wrote many songs including Pancho & Lefty, For The Sake of The Song, If I Needed You, and To Live Is To Fly. Many of his compositions are considered to be masterpieces of American songwriting. His personal story is a sad one as he struggled with substance abuse and alcoholism and a diagnosis of bipolar disorder, but it does not diminish this man’s contribution to American popular music. On this album you will hear Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson, John Prine, Delbert McClinton, Lucinda Williams, Guy Clark, Nanci Griffith, and many more pay tribute to his brilliance.

We Keep It Simple On Sunday With The Byrds’ “Mr. Tambourine Man” as Our AOW and ‘The British Are Coming’ EP in the Afternoon, January 29, 2023

Good morning, Weekenders! You know we keep it pretty simple on Sundays here in The Mermaid Lounge with plenty of wide Open Stream and just a couple of (great) programming items.

Here’s your simple Sunday lineup:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Mr. Tambourine Man by The Byrds NEW!

This is the debut album by this great band, released on June 21, 1965, and marked the debut of the signature guitar sound of Jim McGuinn’s 12-string Rickenbacker guitar and the band’s amazing harmonizing, a vocal approach of the late, great David Crosby who would carry that tradition on into Crosby, Stills & Nash later in his career. This album consists mainly of folk covers, many written by Bob Dylan including the title tune and originals co-written by Gene Clark. The album provided the first American challenge to the chart dominance of The Beatles and other British invasion bands. The Byrds would go on to influence others in the sixties as well as future generations of musicians, including Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers who carried on the jangling sound of McGuinn’s 12-string Rickenbacker throughout their 40-year career. Wonder is widely recognized as a pioneer and major influencer in many musical styles, including rhythm & blues, pop, soul, gospel, funk and jazz. Before, in between and after we give you that great wide Open Stream courtesy of The Music Mermaid. She’s totally unpredictable, and there are times when she’ll pick up a playlist. We give her free reign here in The Lounge.
