10:00 p.m. The Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Jackson Browne NEW!

Before Jackson Browne became a legendary solo artist, he had success writing songs for others. He wrote the song These Days at the age of sixteen. It became a minor hit in 1967 for Nico, a protégé of Andy Warhol. He also wrote songs for fellow Southern California bands, including the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (he was a member of the band for a short time in 1966). The Eagles had their first hit in 1972 with a Jackson Browne song, Take It Easy. Browne also released his first solo album in 1972, which gave him his own Top 40 hits with Doctor My Eyes and Rock Me On The Water. The rest, as they say, is musical history, and Jackson Browne is this week’s featured Singer-Songwriter.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus by Spirit NEW!

Spirit was one of those bands that hung around in your head poking you with a stick until you realized just how good they were. I’m not much for reinventing the wheel just so I can say I wrote it, so I’m giving you a great description of the album from a great website called uDiscoverMusic:

Released in November 1970, this was the original psychedelic era’s final masterpiece. Lyrically, Twelve Dreams Of Dr Sardonicus wraps up everything that era was trying to say. Songs like “Nature’s Way” and “Nothing To Hide” thumb their noses at the straight world; “Love Has Found A Way” and “Life Has Just Begun” illustrate how much is possible if your mind is ready for it. Musically, it’s endlessly inventive, bringing the band’s jazz, pop and heavy rock factions onto the same astral plane. And though it crystallises a moment in time, it doesn’t sound the least bit dated.

One of my great regrets in life was missing this Tom Petty tour with his “other” band, the band that left Gainesville all those years ago. They didn’t make it as Mudcrutch, but they did morph into The Heartbreakers. Later, Petty would pull this band back together and make it count, including this amazing 2016 tour. Their performance of Hungry No More at Boston’s House of Blues blew the doors off the place. And I missed it. Today we’ve got their performance at the Fonda Theatre in Cali.

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers is one of our House Bands (the other being The Beatles) and they hold a special place in our hearts. We struggle daily with the impulse to overplay our house bands, so we keep it on the downlow. But none of that nonsense on the man’s birthday. Enjoy the trip. It’s worth it.

11:00 a.m. The Blues Project Reunion in Central Park, New York, October 24, 1973

This reunion, recorded at the Schaefer Festival in 1973 is amazing, in light of their nasty break-up six years prior. The band that helped pioneer blues-rock included Andy Kulberg, Roy Blumenfeld, the great Al Kooper, Steve Katz and Danny Kalb. They were all on the same page for this one and, if there was any acrimony remaining, it certainly didn’t show.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Their Satanic Majesties Request by The Rolling Stones

We interrupt our blues programming for a bit of psychedelia from The Stones with the second airing of our Album of The Week. Funny thing is, the Rolling Stones are steeped in the blues, so there is a symmetry here.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Their Satanic Majesties Request NEW!

Here we have The Rolling Stones with their 6th British and 8th American studio album released by Decca Records in December of 1967. The band moved away from its R & B roots and experimented with psychedelic sounds and instruments (Mellotron, sound effects, African rhythms, among others) and produced the album themselves. It too a while as their production was interrupted by drug use, court appearances and jail terms by members of the group. They managed, however, to make a very different album but still sound like The Rolling Stones.

3:00 p.m. Under The Influence: Various Artists

This EP and the Album of The Week managed to just fall together nicely today as we present our long-player of mind-altering substances. Next to love and heartbreak, substance use was probably the favorite topic for music. Some of it was legal; a lot of it not. Nope. It’s not a misspelling. Check out the album cover. Be that as it may, we continue our little journey down psychedelia lane with our AOW selection. Rather than me writing a tome here, I’ll give you the review by ‘Discover Music.’

You know an album is timeless when it takes a half-century to be properly appreciated. The Zombies were, however, right into the spirit of the times in 1968, evolving from their R&B origins and writing one of the most enduring peace-and-love anthems, Odyssey & Oracle’s only hit, “Time Of The Season.” But it took decades for most people to hear the rest of the album and realise how beautifully inventive it all was. It’s no secret that The Zombies were squeaky-clean compared to most 60s bands, but this album was visionary as they come.
