Here’s the line-up:

10:00 a.m.    The Ungovernables Report: All News You Need to Know

Sarah Freels and Adam Rice give you the what-and-why for.

1:00 p.m.      Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: Live at the Fillmore (1999)

The band’s High Grass Dogs Tour hits the Fillmore with some songs you don’t hear very often, like Country Farm, Free Girl Now, and Swingin’.

5:00 p.m.      In the Spotlight: The Music of Badfinger

Badfinger is the one bona-fide star band the Beatles managed to sign to Apple Records. They made some of the greatest rock n’roll on the planet. Enjoy this set.

The Petty Party Continues and It’s Happy Birthday to Stevie Ray Vaughan!

Good Morning, Ungovernables! Thought we’d do something a bit different today, so we’re taking a close-up look at three Tom Petty albums, two with the Heartbreakers and one solo effort, Highway Companion, one of my all-time favorite Petty albums.

Blog photo 10-3

Here’s the line up:

10:00 a.m.   Stevie Ray Vaughan Live at Montreaux (1982 & 1985)

Today would have been SRV’s 65th birthday, born in the great year of 1954 (along with yours truly). This guy’s life was cut far too short. One of the greatest blues singers and guitarists ever.

1:00 p.m.     Tom Petty’s Highway Companion (released July 25, 2006)

Don’t bother to listen to the critics. All they ever wanted this guy to do is rock out. He’s a whole lot more than that. In fact, his bandmates never understood why he didn’t make an all-acoustic album. He apparently didn’t think he was a good enough guitar player to go there. (He may be no Mike Campbell, but he’s no slouch on that thing.) This is, in my humble opinion, one of the finest albums I’ve heard.

4:00 p.m.     Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ Hypnotic Eye (released July 29, 2014)

The Heartbreakers’ thirteenth and final studio album was one of the best ever. Up until this release, I truly believed that Damn The Torpedoes, would go down in history as the band’s crowning achievement. Not so. (We will get to DTT also.)

7:00 p.m.     Tom Petty & The Hearbreakers’ Mojo (released July 15, 2010)

The Heartbreakers’ twelfth album was recorded live in the studio with no overdubs, and was created as a blues album. If you are a music aficionado and care to explore, there’s a cool little story behind this one.

Two Years Ago Today We Lost Tom Petty, October 2, 2019

Tom Petty left this world two years ago today at the age of 66. For his fans, his friends, his bandmates, and his family it was all too soon. This month we celebrate all the great music he gave us, and remember how much he loved his fans.

Tom-Petty-Heartbreakers

11:00 a.m.   Abby Martin with Richard Wolff: Understanding Marxism and Socialism

2:00 p.m.     Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live: Pack Up the Plantation!

This was the Heartbreakers’ first official “live” album, released in November of 1985. It was primarily recorded at The Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles, but several tracks were recorded earlier.

5:00 p.m.     In the Spotlight: The Music of The Shelters

Let’s not forget that Tom Petty was also a producer and mentor to a band called The Shelters. He produced their first album, and was at work on their second with them when he passed. It has since been released, and we have updated the playlist accordingly.

7:00 p.m.     Tom Petty’s Final Interview

This is a wide-ranging interview about the future. It’s clear that Tom Petty was intending to be around for a while yet.

11:00 a.m.   Tom Petty: Deep Cuts and B-Sides

Here’s a chance to dig deep into the Tom Petty library and pull out songs you probably do not hear much on your local station. Most bands would kill for The Hearbreakers B-sides.

3:00 p.m.     Across the Borderline: Bob Dylan with Tom Petty & The Hearbreakers

A musical chronicle of Bob Dylan’s 1986 tour with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers live from Sydney, Australia.

7:00 p.m.     Music From The Harder They Come

Join Jimmy Cliff, the Maytalls and others for music from the iconic movie.

If you’re on Facebook, please remember to join us tonight at 8:00 p.m. on the Become Ungovernable Watch Party page for Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers “Live” From Fenway Park, Boston (2014)!

Mostly Open Streaming but With a Twist Today, September 25, 2019

Good Morning, Ungovernables! Well, we’re still open streaming, sort of. But today, we must celebrate the life and work of Robert Hunter, fabled lyricist for the Grateful Dead, who passed away yesterday at the age of 78.

It’s The Band, Petty, The Pretenders and a Very Special Concert, September 22, 2019

Good Morning, Ungovernables! We’re starting to get back in the swing of things with the station. We’re in the midst of revamping and realigning our planned programming, as well as trying to get our “on demand” section going. Please be patient as we grow.

10:00 a.m.    Petty Theft: The Covers

No doubt in anybody’s mind: Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers are the greatest cover band in music ever. Here they cover everybody from Carole King to Chuck Berry. Not to be missed.

1:00 p.m.      Steve Earle, Townes VanZandt, and Guy Clark “Live” at the Bluebird Cafe

I’m here to tell you this was a labor of love. The only outlet I could find that still sells this is Amazon. That’s not happening. In the immortal words of Liawatha Warren, “She persisted.” I did.  We’ve got it. And Jeff Bezos didn’t make a penny off it.

4:00 p.m.      In the Spotlight: The Music of The Band

8:00 p.m.      In the Spotlight: The Pretenders

Programming for Wednesday, September 11, 2019

Good Morning, Ungovernables! None of us will ever look at September 11 the same way again. Personally, I’m disgusted by the commercialization of this event at Ground Zero. It’s disgusting, but I digress.

Today, we do have a news special on September 11 coming up. Schedule for today is below.

9-11

10:00 a.m.   The British Are Coming!

From the Beatles, to the Stones to the Hollies and the Tremeloes, it’s a British Invasion!

1:00 p.m.     Wake the Fuck Up, America, Episode 4!

The 9/11 Special with Sarah Freels and Adam Rice

3:00 p.m.      The Allman Brothers Band: Play All Night!

Live from New York’s Beacon Theater

6:00 p.m.      The Inner Sanctum: Black Sea Gull

Brought to you by Carters Little Liver Pills (WTF was in that shit?)

8:00 p.m.     Chris Hedges: The Empire of Illusion

Programming for Tuesday, September 10, 2019

Good Morning, Ungovernables! We have a historic performance starting our programming day off at 10:00 a.m. EST!

the Last Waltz-2

10:00 a.m.    The Band: The Last Waltz

If someone were to ask me the greatest American band next to Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, it wouldn’t be The Eagles. It would be these guys. They had a career that spanned decades and hundreds of songs in their own right, after starting their career as Bob Dylan’s back-up band. The Last Waltz was a fitting farewell for The Band, with the likes of Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, and Van Morrison taking part. Here’s the music. We’ll be live streaming the movie in the next few weeks.

3:00 p.m.    Terry Gannon, Ph.D.: Presentation on Climate at the Independent Institute on December 6, 2017

Is it real? Or isn’t it? Terry L. Gannon received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering and device physics from the University of California at Santa Barbara. In climate science, Dr. Gannon’s technical background in semiconductor science (quantum mechanics, optical phenomena, multi-variable non-linear systems and computer modelling) has enabled him to examine climate change theories comprehensively.

5:00 p.m.    Tom Petty & The Hearbreakers: Deep Cuts, and Lesser Knowns

Tom Petty’s B-sides are pretty much as good as his hits, whether he’s with the Heartbreakers, Mudcrutch, The Traveling Wilbury’s or solo. Enjoy this one.

7:30 p.m.     The Inner Sanctum: Study for Murder

8:00 p.m.     Abby Martin with Peter Joseph: Abolishing Capitalism
