Today we intro Stevie Wonder as our featured singer-songwriter for the week. When he first started out, he was called “Little” Stevie Wonder because he was just eleven years old when he signed his first contract with Tamla Records, and just thirteen years old when his first No. 1 hit, Fingertips, was released. Wonder is widely recognized as a pioneer and major influencer in many musical styles, including rhythm & blues, pop, soul, gospel, funk and jazz. The one and only Woodstock. Woodstock ’99 turned into a disaster because it replaced the ‘love’ portion of the program with ‘rage.’ The original Woodstock was NOT replicated. This EP will take you long into the night as you listen to The Band, Johnny Winter, Richie Havens, Arlo Guthrie, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Janis Joplin, CSNY, The Band, Joan Baez, Santana, Melanie, Country Joe & The Fish, Ten Years After, Jimi Hendrix, Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Joe Cocker, Tim Hardin, Mountain, John B. A Keep-It-Simple Sunday in The Mermaid Lounge Brings Our New AOW and The ‘Music From Laurel Canyon’ EP, December 4, 2022

It’s Sunday morning here in The Mermaid Lounge and I’m off to a bit of a later start than usual, but that’s because we’re keeping it simple today. Somehow, it’s only fitting that Rumors is our Album of The Week this week as we bid farewell to the late, great Christine McVie. We here in the Lounge believe the best stuff on this one was hers.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Rumors by Fleetwood Mac NEW!

Sometimes things just fall into place. When I add to my album list, I sometimes add ten or twenty to the list at time so I don’t have to think about it every week. That’s what happened with Rumors. I had no idea I’d be paying respects to the late, great Christine McVie this week. It’s only fitting that this great album fell into place here. One of my favorite albums of all time for sure from a band I sometimes have a love-hate relationship with. But that’s me. Big Mac is one of those bands I liked better as a blues band. I certainly don’t like everything they did as a pop-rock band, but I like enough of it. This was their eleventh studio album and it was released during a time of heavy drug use and personal relationship management problems, hence the title. I only ever saw them once live in my lifetime and that was enough. It was just that Stevie Nicks spent too much time changing outfits for me.

One of the best times in music was undoubtedly the sixties and seventies, when cross-pollination was king. It was during this time that country-rock was born. You’ll hear The Byrds, The Mamas & The Papas, Buffalo Springfield, The Beach Boys, The Lovin’ Spoonful, The Doors, Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell, The Monkees, CSNY, Manassas, John Mayuall, The Eagles, J.D. Souther, Harry Nilsson, Canned Heat, Carole King, James Taylor, Souther-Hillman-Furay, Linda Ronstadt and more!

Sunday in The Mermaid Lounge Brings Creedence Clearwater Revival With Our New AOW and Volume Two of The ‘Sixties Rotation’ EPs, November 27, 2022

Good Morning, Weekenders! The sun is already out here and we’ve got an easy day going today with some great music from the first generation of classic rockers with Volume Two of ‘The Sixties Rotation’ for five uninterrupted hours this afternoon.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Green River by Creedence Clearwater Revival NEW!

CCR, as they are popularly known, was a force in 1969, releasing three albums. Green River was one of those releases, and it gave us some great songs including the hits Bad Moon Rising and Green River, which both peaked at No. 2 on the charts. The songs Lodi and Commotion were also fan favorites, although they didn’t reach the chart status of the first two. John Fogerty was the creative force behind CCR, and he disliked the long, acid-infused jams popular at the time. CCR bucked the norm and preferred the tightly structured roots music that would actually make them famous. We love this band here in The Mermaid Lounge, and we believe they’ve never made a bad song.

Here we are at the second phase of our Sixties absorption, which mostly focuses on the mid-to-late musical portion of that decade. 11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Everybody Knows by Stephen Stills & Judy Collins NEW!

And yes, everybody knows that the two were a “thing” in 1968 into 1969, and that Stephen Stills wrote songs about her, namely Suite: Judy Blue Eyes and Judy. In spite of the fact that Stills has played on several of Collins’ songs, they never made an album together or toured together until 2017, with the release of this collaboration. We’ve got it for you this week.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: I Got Dem Ol’ Kozmic Blues Again Mama by Janis Joplin NEW!

Janis gets a spin for this week with her very first and only solo album released during her lifetime on September 11, 1969. This is the album she recorded right after leaving Big Brother & The Holding Company. She enlisted Sam Andrews, guitarist for Big Brother, to help with the project, as well as the Kozmic Blues Band. She also added a brass and horn section, something Big Brother would not allow when she was with them. This album was a departure from her psychedelic rock days as it was much more R & B- and blues-driven. This is the expanded 1999 release with ‘live’ tunes from Woodstock included and with a cover of Dylan’s Dear Landlord, with some new lyrics and a new arrangement by Joplin.
