Today we intro our new singer-songwriter, Laura Nyro. She’s wrote so many hits for so many people over her career, including The Fifth Dimension (Wedding Bell Blues, Stoned Soul Picnic), Barbra Streisand (Stoney End), Blood, Sweat and Tears (And When I Die), and Three Dog Night (Eli’s Comin’). She also had a formidable solo career of her own, and there is nothing like hearing Laura Nyro singer her own songs. You’ll get to do that tonight. We love her here in The Mermaid Lounge.

We’ve got the second airing of this week’s Album of The Week at mid-afternoon. This one was recorded over five months in several different cities due to the band’s intense road schedule.

7:00 p.m. The Allman Brothers Band Live at The Fillmore East, New York City, March 12-13, 1971

The Fillmore East concerts deliver some of the finest live Allman Brothers work ever, with a lineup that boasted both Dickie Betts and Duane Allman on lead guitar. Duane also played slide.

Tonight we launch Jackson Browne as our newest singer-songwriter. This is a guy who wrote songs for other artists in the sixties, but broke out on his own during the early seventies. He hasn’t stopped since.

This EP will take you long into the night as you listen to The Band, Johnny Winter, Richie Havens, Arlo Guthrie, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Janis Joplin, CSNY, The Band, Joan Baez, Santana, Melanie, Country Joe & The Fish, Ten Years After, Jimi Hendrix, Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Joe Cocker, Tim Hardin, Mountain, John B. We’ve got our second airing of this week’s Album of The Week by Leon Russell. It’s one half straightforward roots rock n’ roll, and the other half psychedelia. Only Leon could pull this off.

7:00 p.m. Muddy Waters: The Johnny Winter Sessions

By the mid-seventies, the Chess label had folded and Muddy Waters was in need of a new label. He was also in need of a career revival. Enter Johnny Winter, one of the finest blues guitarists on the planet. Between 1976 and 1981, Winters produced three Grammy-winning albums for Muddy Waters, and also supported him on the road in 1979. This compilation gives you the some great blues by two blues masters.

I have long been a fan of Leon Russell. He’s one of my favorite singer-songwriters. I also remember the first time I heard Carney and thinking that this would be the album where others would recognize just how great he truly was. Carney is Russell’s third studio album, released in 1972. It gave him his first hit single in Tight Rope (backed by Masquerade). The album is a split between straightforward roots rock and a bit of psychedelia. The music critics hate that shit, but his fans didn’t. That’s what mattered. The album peaked at No. 2 on Billboard.

1:00 p.m. Water, Water Everywhere: Various Artists

Water is absolutely essential to the perpetuation of life on the planet, and it is a popular subject in the music world, as you will see. Tonight we debut two of the most brilliant and influential singer-songwriters on the planet, the McGarrigle sisters. They have written some of Linda Ronstadt’s most iconic songs, including Heart Like A Wheel and You Tell Me That I’m Falling Down, but their songs have been recorded by many, many other artists as well. They also have had a successful career all their own, and you’ll hear them sing their own songs tonight.

We’re raring to go headlong into another year. It will be our sixth, but we’ve got another whole week left in 2022 and plenty of music to share. We’ve got some special stuff lined up for next week as we celebrate Music Festival Week. Stay tuned!
