Eva Cassidy was a woman of extraordinary talent with a beautiful voice, and she died far too soon for most people to even know about her. ‘we here learned about her posthumously from a friend. This album is a really interesting album for its time. This kind of album is commonplace now, but it wasn’t so common at the time of its release. It’s a collection of her rehearsal tapes and some live performances that was released seven years after her death. But it’s not just a mere collection of songs thrown together. Give it a listen.

It’s tough to find a decent photo of Tracy Nelson & Mother Earth, believe me. We tried mightily but the best we could come up with was this poster. Etta James once called Nelson, “a bad white girl.” And she certainly is bad in the best sense of the word. One of the absolute best combinations in music happened when Ronstadt sang Tracy Nelson’s Down So Low, and you will hear Nelson’s version on this album. While Mother Earth is often presented as merely a vehicle for Nelson, that’s an unfair characterization. The band was more than that, and you’ll see that on this album.

Not to be confused with our ‘Ladies Day Out’ EP. While we certainly include woman artists in this playlist, this one’s about the use of the word lady, girl, woman, chick, whatever the term, in the title, lyrics, or both. Released in 1999, this album by Alison Krauss is categorized as “country, bluegrass, and adult contemporary” (whatever that means). Critical commentary on this one is that in spite of the dobro and mandolin, Alison Krauss is a pop star at heart. Please. I never listen to critics. If I did, I wouldn’t have the album collection I do. Music is in the ear of the beholder. And life is too short to listen to shitty music. Regardless of what they call it, this is a great album.

10:00 a.m. Tom Petty’s Top 100 Songs UPDATED!

We started at 50 songs the first time we aired this; then moved up to 65. To hell with it, Petty’s up to 100 now and he deserves to be there. We’ve got Petty solo, as a Heartbreaker, with Mudcrutch, and as Charlie T. Wilbury Jnr. Most are original compositions. Some are covers. Some were only ever done as part of ‘live’ performances. No matter. The man is a musical godsend. I think we’re pretty measured on this station, and tend to underplay our house bands to remain in control. Today, we get to do the opposite.

We do not normally play an EP at 7:00 p.m. but that changes today. We take you into the evening hours with our ‘In Your Dreams’ multi-artist EP. They are one of the best-selling groups of the 1960s, and songs like Sound of Silence, Mrs. Robinson, and Bridge Over Troubled Water reached number one on music charts worldwide. More than half a million people showed up in New York’s Central Park in 1981, which remains one of the most widely attended concerts in music history. What is not to love about these guys? They ‘ve made some of the best music on the planet, whether together or solo. But today, they are Simon & Garfunkel.
