We’ve got a band here that helped pioneer the marriage between country and rock playing at a legendary venue. My Father’s Place at The Roslyn Hotel opened in 1971 and “created a scene that would influence music for decades to come,” according to the New York Times. They were spot on.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Guy Clark

I remember seeing this guy one very cold, snowy night as my friends and I were freezing our asses off running round Harvard Square in Cambridge getting stoned. We were freezing and one of the greatest music venues, Passim’s Coffee House, was open and serving stuff that was warm. We went in. The cover wasn’t expensive, so we took a table. And when Guy Clark came out, someone we’d never heard before, we had our minds completely blown. He’s been a favorite ever since, and is certainly one of the greatest singer-songwriters I’ve ever experienced.

Emmylou Harris’ fourth studio album is truly a thing of beauty. It is absolutely one of my all-time favorite albums with not one singular inferior song from start to finish. It was her second consecutive number one country album on the Billboard charts. She sings the songs of Gram Parsons, Chuck Berry, the Louvins, Rodney Crowell, Susanna Clark, for starters. The album also includes the cover of Townes Van Zandt’s haunting Pancho & Lefty which, subsequently, would become his best-known composition. You couldn’t ask for a better bunch of artists for help, with Nicolette Larson (duet vocals), Dolly Parton, and Fayssoux Starling providing duet and backing vocals, and a laundry list of brilliant musicians including members of The Hot Band, Albert Lee and James Burton on electric guitars, Hank DiVito on pedal steel, Glen D. Hardin on keyboards, and more. Just wow.

She finally achieved that when she joined up with Dolly Parton and Emmylou Harris for the Trio albums. Here you’ll hear her sing with J. D. Souther, Randy Newman Ry Cooder, Hoyt Axton, Wendy Waldman, Neil Young, Ann Savoy, Paul Simon, Rosemary Clooney, Aaron Neville, Maria Muldaur and more. And you’ll hear her as lead vocalist, background singer, and harmony singer.

Home Plate, released in 1975, was Bonnie Raitt’s fifth studio album. Although she’s mostly described as a blues singer, Bonnie Raitt has managed to expand that repertoire over the years while maintaining her blues roots. And did we mention she plays that Fender Stratocaster like she was born with it in her hands? She is one of the finest slide guitarists on the planet. I loved Bonnie Raitt before this album. After Home Plate was released, it became adoration.

3:00 p.m. The Female Species: Various Artists

This will be a week to celebrate the women of music, but we start with songs that celebrate women, ladies, girls in the title, lyrics or both. Women have long been the subject of much joy and heartache in the music world, and we’ll give it to you here. Love this band and the rap that they can’t reproduce their sound ‘live’ on stage was bullshit, by the way. That was not my experience when I saw them. Today we (belatedly) celebrate Walter Becker’s birthday by putting Steely Dan In the Spotlight.

I’d say we’re celebrating Black History Month, but every month is Black History Month here in The Mermaid Lounge. If it weren’t for black music, there would be no rock n’ roll. And no.
