We Begin Another (Albeit, Short) Work Week With Nanci Griffith, Neil Young and Our All About Blue Too Playlist, Monday, November 21, 2022

Good Morning, Music Lovers! It’s another Monday in The Mermaid Lounge and we face another work week. But hey, it’s a shortened work week, so that’s a bonus. Speaking of getting a bonus, we’ve got some great music today, including a new ‘live’ Neil Young performance later.

We aired the first volume of this a couple weeks ago, so it’s only fitting we air the second half. This was a “surprise” live performance by Young and it was recorded and broadcast on WNEW-FM in New York. It was originally only a fan-recorded event, but it was eventually officially released in 2017. When the release came out, there were two songs that were also live performances but not at this venue. We have also included those live songs here and they are the last two songs in this set. Enjoy. Neil Young is always a treat in our book.

The year 1975 was a very good year, especially for Linda Ronstadt. She had already released Don’t Cry Now in 1973, but 1974 was the year for Heart Like A Wheel and that album propelled Linda Ronstadt’s career into the stratosphere. She began that climb to the top in 1975 and was the Queen of Rock during the seventies, gracing the covers of Rolling Stone (more than once), Time, Newsweek, Cashbox, Circus, Creem and others. 11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: I Got Dem Ol’ Kozmic Blues Again Mama by Janis Joplin NEW!

Janis gets a spin for this week with her very first and only solo album released during her lifetime on September 11, 1969. This is the album she recorded right after leaving Big Brother & The Holding Company. She enlisted Sam Andrews, guitarist for Big Brother, to help with the project, as well as the Kozmic Blues Band. She also added a brass and horn section, something Big Brother would not allow when she was with them. This album was a departure from her psychedelic rock days as it was much more R & B- and blues-driven. This is the expanded 1999 release with ‘live’ tunes from Woodstock included and with a cover of Dylan’s Dear Landlord, with some new lyrics and a new arrangement by Joplin.

Maria Muldaur’s career began in Greenwich Village during the great sixties folk revival, but her repertoire is anything but limited as she’s built a career around folk, blues, country, gospel and R & B. This is Muldaur’s third studio album and it’s a beauty. She invites J. J. Cale, Waddy Wachtel, Linda Ronstadt, Bill Payne (of Little Feat), and Russ Kunkel along for the ride. Check the amazing vocals on the song Sweet Harmony, featuring Linda Ronstadt and Wendy Waldman on backing vocals, Arthur Adams on baritone vocals, and Amos Garrett on bass vocals. Amazing.

She has since become one of the most respected music artists and songwriters in the business. You can read about her here, and you can hear her for yourselves tonight at ten.

We’re off to an early start today, so I can’t spend a lot of time writing here. Suffice it to say that you can look at the blog post from yesterday and read the final paragraph.
