It’s Our ‘Original Sixties Rotation’ EP, The Association, and Tom Petty as Our Featured Singer-Songwriter, Monday, February 26, 2024

Good morning, music lovers! We are starting off the week with a rare EP on a Monday, but it’s a short month and we have to get this one in. We are also winding down on our Singer-Songwriter Series, saving the best for last. This week we introduce Tom Petty as our featured artist. Next week? It’s Lennon & McCartney.

Here’s your musical Monday:

9:00 a.m. The Original Sixties Rotation: Various Artists

One of two major sixties playlists airs today. You’ll hear The Beatles, The Monkees, Sonny & Cher, Joe Cocker, Simon & Garfunkel, Little Eva, The Everly Brothers, The Searchers, Dusty Springfield, The Drifters, The Dave Clark Five, Johnny Rivers, Bob Dylan, The Animals, Petula Clark, The Rolling Stones, Procol Harum, The Turtles, Del Shannon, The Temptations, James Brown, Fontella Bass, The Box Tops, Blues Image, Booker T & The MG’s, The Four Tops, The Lovin’ Spoonful, Them, The Left Banke, Fats Domino and more!

4:00 p.m. The Association Live at The Salt Palace, Salt Lake City, Utah, April 3, 1970

I love airing the old bands. It’s often tough to find ‘live’ performances but, if you persevere, you can find some. This is a great performance from The Salt Palace.

We’re winding down on this great series which has taken us through nearly a year. We’ve saved the best for the end. This week we feature Dr. Tom Petty, certainly the most prolific and consequential songwriter of his generation via The Heartbreakers, Mudcrutch, The Traveling Wilburys and his solo career. Every single song on this playlist is a Petty composition, and this is just the tip of the iceberg.

We’ve Got a Great Sunday On Tap With Queen, Our House EP and Birthday Boy George Harrison, February 25, 2024

It’s another Sunday here in The Mermaid Lounge and it’s also George Harrison’s birthday. We will celebrate that with our closing program. Before that it’s Queen’s new AOW and our multi-artist House EP.

Here’s your Sunday Funday lineup:

The band’s third studio album was released in November 1974, and was a departure from the progressive sound of their first two album. It focused instead on more pop-centric songs and traditional rock, eventually leading to the Queen ‘sound.’ The album propelled the band to mainstream popularity in the UK and the rest of the world. Happy 50th!

1:00 p.m. The #BecomeUngovernable House EP: Various Artists

The music of the sixties (primarily) and seventies was the inspiration for starting this experiment. You’ll hear Barry McGuire, The Temptations, Edwin Starr, Peter Tosh, The Beatles, T. Rex, The Who, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bob Dylan, Country Joe & The Fish, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Bob Marley & The Wailers, Joan Baez, CSNY, Pink Floyd, The Animals, The Plastic Ono Band, Paul McCartney & Wings, Joni Mitchell, Sam Cooke, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Three Dog Night, Jimmy Cliff, Marvin Gaye, Phil Ochs, Tom Rush, Pete Seeger, The Band, Nina Simone, Janis Joplin, Linda Ronstadt and more!

8:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of George Harrison

Today we celebrate what would be George Harrison’s 81st birthday by putting him In the Spotlight featuring his muisc with The Beatles, The Traveling Wilbury’s and as a solo artist.

Here’s your musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. Ladies Day Out: Various Artists

Certainly one of my favorite sixties musical genres. This EP has all the best bands of the era, plus some bands who simply pay homage to the genre. You’ll hear Vanilla Fudge, The Chambers Brothers, The Beatles, Electric Prunes, The Animals, Jefferson Airplane, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Doors, Pink Floyd, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Donovan, Strawberry Alarm Clock, The Byrds, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Traffic, Cream, Dr. John, Procol Harum, Fleetwood Mac, The Who, Canned Heat, Yes, Electric Light Orchestra, Tommy James & The Shondells, Mudcrutch, Blind Faith, The Grateful Dead, Velvet Underground, Big Brother & The Holding Company and more!

The Stones are back with our Album of The Week, their twelfth studio release that went to number one in the US and number two in the UK.

It’s no secret that Dr. Petty wanted his band to sit around on chairs as they grew old and play the blues. Unfortunately, we didn’t have him around for long enough. However, the Heartbreakers loved da blues and played their fair share. We’ve got a new, updated playlist for you this evening.

Sunday Brings The Rolling Stones’ AOW, Our EP About The Night, and The Mamas & The Papas, February 18, 2024

Good morning on this not-quite-as-simple Sunday as we offer three bits of programming for the first time on a Sunday! The shape of things to come? Well, we have a lot of music.

Here’s your Sunday Funday lineup:

Another on our list of albums turning 50 years old this year, it’s the 12th studio album by the Rolling Stones and their final with Mick Taylor as guitarist. He would soon be replaced by Ron Wood. The album combines traditional blues and rock and roll sound with elements of funk and reggae. It went to number one in the U.S. and number two in the UK.

2:00 p.m. Here Comes The Night: Various Artists

We’re back with songs about the night in the title, lyrics or both with Warren Zevon, The J. Geils Band, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Them, The Beatles, Patti Smith, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bruce Springsteen, The Kinks, Electric Prunes, Phoebe Snow, Joe Walsh, The Eagles, The Ronettes, John Cougar Mellencamp, The Doors, Poco, Emmylou Harris, Neil Diamond, The Animals, The Rolling Stones, Don McLean, Steve Winwood, The Traveling Wilburys, Sam Cooke, Jimmy Cliff, Bonnie Raitt and more!

8:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Mamas & The Papas

We’ve been remiss and have allowed too much time to lapse before spinning this one. In spite of the fact that this band only recorded together from 1965 through 1968, they were a defining force in the music of the sixties and a mainstay of the Laurel Canyon scene. They made some of the best music of their generation.

Here we are again in The Lounge on another simple Sunday. We have plenty of wide Open Stream today with a couple of great pieces of programming thrown in.

Eldorado, the fourth studio album by ELO, was also their very first complete ‘concept’ album, with the idea written by Jeff Lynne before he wrote any music. The influence of The Beatles is prevalent throughout the album and, of course, Jeff Lynne would go on to make music with various members of The Beatles during the 1980’s and 1990’s. You can read all about it here.
