Sunday Brings Little Feat’s “Dixie Chicken” as Our AOW, and the ‘Little Bit O’ Soul’ EP, December 11, 2022

It’s a Sunday in The Mermaid Lounge with the threat of what we call a ‘wintry mix’ in the air. That’s when the weather people hedge their bets because they can’t figure out if it’s going to be snow or rain or both. I’m hedging my bets with a nice day indoors listening to some great music!

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Dixie Chicken by Little Feat NEW!

This was Little Feat’s third studio album, released in 1973, and certainly became a landmark for the band. The title song would go a long way toward establishing the band’s great signature sound. Little Feat also added the great guitarist Paul Barrere and percussionist Sam Clayton. Bassist Kenny Gradney was also added to replace Roy Estrada. It signaled a change of the band’s sound, moving them toward New Orleans R & B and funk.This lineup would endure until Lowell George’s death in 1979 and the band’s subsequent breakup.

Without a doubt, a Mermaid Lounge favorite, but with Lowell George at the helm. Do I think they were good post-George? Yes. But the notion that there’s a Little Feat without Lowell George is the same for me as the Grateful Dead without Jerry Garcia or The Heartbreakers without Tom Petty.

This is one sweet band, led by Ann Savoy who teamed up with Linda Ronstadt as the ZoZo Sisters for the great album, Adieu False Heart. The Savoys have a long history of traditional Cajun music and it shows. This is a totally captivating musical genre, and these women have it down cold. We are currently on the hunt for more of their stuff and will be adding it to our rotation very soon.

We have another repeat performance here, but we haven’t aired this one since 2020, so it’ll be like brand new. Would it matter? If you’re a true Deadhead, you’re open to listening over and over and over and over…

Well, Weekenders, here we are again kicking off a two-day reprieve from the teeming masses of consuming humanity (all except for me; I’ve got one more day to go). What better way to go? I can vividly remember seeing this amazing band live at The Paradise in Boston back in the day. Man, there were people dancing on the tables they were so good. But they have made many albums and many live appearances over their half a century in music and, while we do have some of their stuff floating around our stream, I have a vast collection about to make it’s mark on our airwaves. Stay tuned. This is just the beginning.

Etta James’ career began the year I was born, in 1954. Right up through 2012, her big, earthy voice has interpreted many genres, including R & B/soul, the blues, gospel, jazz, and rock n’ roll. She gained fame with several hits, including Tell Mama, At Last, and I’d Rather Go Blind. She won six Grammy awards, and 17 blues music awards, and she is a resident of the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame (1993), The Blues Hall of Fame (2001), and Grammy Hall of Fame (1999).
