We Keep It Simple With Stevie Wonder’s “Innervisions” as Our AOW, and ‘The British Are Coming’ EP Later, Sunday, February 26, 2023

Good morning, musicologists! As usual, it’s a ‘keep it simple’ Sunday with plenty of wide Open Stream and modest programming. Hell, it’s a day of rest.

Here’s today’s musical lineup:

12:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Innervisions by Stevie Wonder NEW!

Innervisions was singer, songwriter and musician Stevie Wonder’s sixteenth studio album, and it is largely viewed as his transition from ‘Little’ Stevie Wonder to a more mature, socially conscious musician. It was released on August 3, 1973 on the Tamla label (a subsidiary of Motown). At the 16th Grammy Awards it won for Best Album of The Year, and Living For The City won for Best R&B Song. You can learn more about this great landmark album here.

4:00 p.m. The British Are Coming: Various Artists

This is a favorite EP as we give you music from across the pond from the British Invasion and beyond. You’ll hear The Who, The Beatles, Dave Mason, Electric Light Orchestra, Petula Clark, The Zombies, The Hollies, Dusty Springfield, Small Faces, Led Zeppelin, The Kinks, Queen, the Dave Clark Five, The (early) Bee Gees, The Moody Blues, Rod Stewart, George Harrison, Them, Herman’s Hermits, Gerry & The Pacemakers, Badfinger, The Yardbirds, Traffic, Elton John, Lulu, Pink Floyd, Yes, The Animals, Manfred Mann’s Earth Band, The Spencer Davis Group, Cream, Donovan, The Animals, The Rolling Stones, Queen and more!

Saturday The Mermaid Lounge Celebrates George Harrison’s 80th Birthday as Our Featured Singer-Songwriter, Among Other Things, February 25, 2023

Good morning, weekenders! We are here and today we intro George Harrison as this week’s featured singer-songwriter on what would be his 80th birthday. But there’s more!

Here’s today’s musical landscape:

9:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Canciones di Mi Padre by Linda Ronstadt FINAL AIRING!

Sadly, the final airing of this outstanding effort by Linda Ronstadt is here. We start off early to day for those global listeners who have not yet had a chance to hear it. Ronstadt took a stand with her record company to make the album, and she faced down the naysayers predicting the destruction of her career as it became an instant global hit, won her a Grammy, and is the biggest selling non-English album of all time.

11:00 a.m. The Sixties Rotation: Volume Two

Volume two of this mix covers the mid-to-late part of the sixties, and you’ll hear The Mamas & The Papas, Simon & Garfunkel, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, Buffalo Springfield, Sly & The Family Stone, The Temptations, The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Roy Orbison, The Yardbirds, The Animals, Linda Ronstadt, The Byrds, Chuck Berry, James Brown, Blind Faith, the Spencer Davis Group, Elvis Presley, The Box Tops, The Doors, Marvin Gaye, Wilson Pickett, The Band, Bob Dylan, Judy Collins, The Beatles, The Ronettes, The Kinks, Jimmy Cliff, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Zombies, Donovan, Velvet Underground, B.B. King, Led Zeppelin and more!

8:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of George Harrison NEW!

Today we celebrate what would have been George Harrison’s 80th birthday. Hard to believe. We feature over two hours of music from his years with The Beatles, his solo career, and his time with The Traveling Wilburys. George spent many years in the shadow of the Lennon-McCartney songwriting juggernaut, but when he burst out he did it in grand style, distinguishing himself songwriter of immense talent.

It is an excellent day to tune us in, folks, but we admit we say that several times a week. The only way you’ll understand why we say it is if you give us a try. The best thing of all is that it won’t cost you a cent. Ever. You have absolutely nothing to lose and everything to gain. What could be better?

It’s Saturday and We’ve Got One Outgoing and One Incoming Singer-Songwriter, and Our Multi-Artist ‘The British Are Coming’ EP, November 26, 2022

11:00 a.m. Here Comes The Night: Various Artists

We’ve got today’s EP which is focused on night time (which means our EP focused on morning can’t be far behind). You’ll hear Warren Zevon, the J. 7:00 p.m. The Doors Live at The Isle of Wight Festival, Afton Down, Newport, England, August 30, 1970

The Lizard King and his band tear it up at the Isle of Wight Festival just about a year before his death. I always marvel at the body of work they were able to achieve in just four short years.

C’mon, people. It’s Friday and there’s nothing like some great background music to help get you through the day in a better mental state. We are just the ticket. We’re free. We’re on 24/7 (not just when there’s programming). And we’re all about music, not chat. We also have a strict rule against commercial advertising. We simply don’t take it.

We Keep It Simple On Sundays. This Week It’s The Zombies With Our Psychedelic AOW, and Our ‘Here Comes The Night’ EP, October 2, 2022

Good Morning, Music Lovers! We are here in The Mermaid Lounge and the wind is whipping out there; there’s a nip in the air…but it’s going to be toasty in here. We keep it simple on Sundays: A new Album of The Week and usually an EP. The rest is wide Open Stream. Tune us in.

Here’s today’s musical landscape:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Odessy and Oracle by The Zombies NEW!

Nope. It’s not a misspelling. Check out the album cover. Be that as it may, we continue our little journey down psychedelia lane with our AOW selection. Rather than me writing a tome here, I’ll give you the review by ‘Discover Music.’

You know an album is timeless when it takes a half-century to be properly appreciated. The Zombies were, however, right into the spirit of the times in 1968, evolving from their R&B origins and writing one of the most enduring peace-and-love anthems, Odyssey & Oracle’s only hit, “Time Of The Season.” But it took decades for most people to hear the rest of the album and realise how beautifully inventive it all was. It’s no secret that The Zombies were squeaky-clean compared to most 60s bands, but this album was visionary as they come.
Must hear: Time Of The Season

Discover Music

3:00 p.m. Here Comes The Night: Various Artists

The antidote to our ‘Ode To Morning’ EP, which is coming up soon also. Songs with references to the night in the title, lyrics or both. Our multi-artist EP’s are designed to be Open Stream with a Theme. You’ll hear Warren Zevon, the J. Geils Band, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Them, The Beatles, Van Morrison, Patti Smith, Van Morrison, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bruce Springsteen, The Kinks, The Electric Prunes, Phoebe Snow, Joe Walsh, The Eagles, The Ronettes, John Cougar Mellencamp, Linda Ronstadt, Joni Mitchell, Emmylou Harris, The Doors, Poco, Neil Diamond, The Animals, The Band, The Rolling Stones, Don McLean, Steve Winwood, Cat Stevens, The Traveling Wilburys, Sam Cooke, Jimmy Cliff, Bonnie Raitt and more!

What could be better on a cloudy day than hunkering down with some good music. So far the weather isn’t matching what’s on my phone, which says partly sunny. Not even close. And if it does eventually get there, there’s always room for great music. We’ve got it here, so join listeners from around the globe.
