Good Morning, Musicologists. Now, I’m all messed up with a Thursday holiday. I feel like this is Monday but, in fact, it’s Friday and my week is almost over (one more day tomorrow). That is what I’m thankful for in case anyone wants to know. And this great job I have messing with the music.

We haven’t heard this one for a while, but it’s here tonight. It’s also one of our playlists that’s about to get an update, so next time around it’ll be expanded. In the meantime, enjoy.

It’s the day after Thanksgiving, also known as Black Friday. Now, most people think of Black Friday as the start of the Christmas shopping season. Personally? I think of it as life in hell if you’re in the retail world. And it remains life in hell until Christmas is over. But here in The Mermaid Lounge? The living is easy. This is our fifth year of this great Tradition, all 18 minutes of Arlo Guthrie’s rambling historical narrative of Alice’s Restaurant. Whether the event really happened according to the musical legend or not has been the subject of much discussion over the years. However, it seems that The Berkshire Eagle has finally put the question to bed for all of us. Come join us for this great holiday tradition!

2:00 p.m. Down In New Orleans: Various Artists

We haven’t aired this great EP since sometime in September, but it’s back today for Thanksgiving. Not only do we have all of the rock n’ roll artists who were born in New Orleans, but we’re playing traditional New Orleans blues, jazz. R & B, and Cajun/Zydeco. And yes, everybody knows that the two were a “thing” in 1968 into 1969, and that Stephen Stills wrote songs about her, namely Suite: Judy Blue Eyes and Judy. In spite of the fact that Stills has played on several of Collins’ songs, they never made an album together or toured together until 2017, with the release of this collaboration. We’ve got it for you this week.

She began that climb to the top in 1975 and was the Queen of Rock during the seventies, gracing the covers of Rolling Stone (more than once), Time, Newsweek, Cashbox, Circus, Creem and others. 11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: I Got Dem Ol’ Kozmic Blues Again Mama by Janis Joplin NEW!

Janis gets a spin for this week with her very first and only solo album released during her lifetime on September 11, 1969. This is the album she recorded right after leaving Big Brother & The Holding Company. She enlisted Sam Andrews, guitarist for Big Brother, to help with the project, as well as the Kozmic Blues Band. She also added a brass and horn section, something Big Brother would not allow when she was with them. This album was a departure from her psychedelic rock days as it was much more R & B- and blues-driven. This is the expanded 1999 release with ‘live’ tunes from Woodstock included and with a cover of Dylan’s Dear Landlord, with some new lyrics and a new arrangement by Joplin.
